You Could Be Playing Battlefield 6 Playtests Very Soon, Here's How

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 21:16

The next Battlefield game is currently in development, having undergone very limited playtesting so far. Developer DICE has now announced an invite-only pre-alpha test which begins on May 23 and lasts for just 72 hours.

In a post on the BattlefieldComm X page, the developer writes, "As part of our ongoing efforts to test the future of Battlefield, starting May 23, we will run a one-time 72-hour Pre-Alpha Server Performance Test in Europe, North America, and select areas of Asia."

The developer explains the playtest's purpose is to "verify server performance and stability with increased player counts" during the weekend's testing period. There will be a "select group" of maps and modes available to play.

Helldivers 2 Update Sees Players Returning In Droves

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 20:39

Helldivers 2 player numbers are looking pretty healthy following the release of its latest update, Heart of Democracy, reaching peaks the game hasn't seen since its initial post-release rush. Despite a rocky first year of release, the higher player numbers show Arrowhead's efforts to turn the game around are working.

Helldivers 2's creative director Johan Pilestedt posted a screenshot to X showing almost 198,000 concurrent players online, calling it potentially "the largest simultaneous return of players for Helldivers," adding that the "team did a MEGA job on the update!" He later added that there are "around 2.5 million Helldivers playing the game every week," and anticipated seeing more players join following the most recent update.

Since then, Arrowhead Game Studios has worked hard to improve the game and regain player trust, with CEO Shams Jorjani acknowledging how the swing from "it's so over" to "we're so back" had become a meme among the game's fanbase. In less than a year, Helldivers 2 managed to recover from review bombing to return to a "very positive" review rating on Steam, and now that is starting to be reflected in the game's player numbers.

Death Stranding 2 Dev Says PS4 To PS5 Upgrade Is Not Exciting, Just "More Efficient"

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 20:30

Gone are the days where a new console generation is expected to bring a game-changing amount of new technical capabilities, according to Akio Sakamoto, chief technical officer at Kojima Productions. The developer said the difference between the PS4 and PS5 "isn't so great" but at least makes development "more efficient."

In an interview with Edge Magazine about Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which will be released on PS5 in June, Sakamoto compared the experience of developing for the two latest PlayStation generations. Where current-generation consoles used to bring major upgrades--just look at the difference between the original PlayStation and the PS2--the latest generational upgrade doesn't have as much impact on what developers can achieve.

"The most obvious improvement from a technological point of view is the reduction in loading times, but to be honest, the difference between the two hardware systems isn't so great," Sakamoto says. "It's more a case that on PS5 there are more efficient ways of arriving at similar goals."

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade For PS5 Gets $30 Discount At Amazon

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 10:40
See at Amazon See at Best Buy ($70) See at Walmart ($55) See at Target (sold out)

Amazon has dropped the price of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade for PS5 to only $40. The PS5 physical edition had been out of print for years, which led to some rather ridiculous prices on the reseller market. Earlier this year, Square Enix finally printed a fresh batch of the sought-after edition that bundles the base game and the Intermission DLC. Multiple retailers sold out of the reprinted copies months ago, while others still regularly sell it for its full $70 list price.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade for PS5 $40 (was $70)

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a gorgeous reboot of the classic 1997 game it's based on. Set primarily within the early Midgar chapters of Final Fantasy 7, the remake gives Cloud Strife and the rest of the Avalanche crew a massive graphical glow-up as they fight to stop Shinra Inc. from turning the planet's life essence into a power source. Ghosts from the past threaten Cloud and his friends, and toward the end of the game, there are major changes to the storyline that shake up the status quo.

The Intermission expansion focuses on Yuffie Kisaragi and her partner Sonon Kusakabe as they work to steal a powerful artifact from Shinra. This is a short but fun add-on to the main campaign of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which also saw various technical and graphical improvements added to the game. It's a fairly linear game overall--with some annoying padding--but if you're looking to revisit the cyberpunk world of Square Enix's beloved sci-fantasy game, Final Fantasy 7 Remake won't disappoint.

It's also worth noting that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 port. Though it's not available to preorder yet and no release date has been set, we'd expect it to receive a physical edition, too.

You should also check out the official Material Ultimania book focused on the PS5 version of FF7 Remake. Published in November, Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Material Ultimania Plus takes fans behind the scenes for a look at the creation of the heralded RPG. Normally $40, the hardcover edition of the new book is on sale for $25 at Amazon. You can also save $15 on the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Material Ultimania book, which drops the price to $25. This 336-page hardcover focuses on FF7 Remake's original PS4 version.

Keyswitch Standard-Bearer Cherry Offers Up Four New Keyswitches At Computex

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 08:57

When two things rub together, they create friction, and friction slows things down and creates wear. That includes not just things like analog sticks, but the keyswitches in our keyboards, too. Cherry, the German company that sets the standard for keyswitch quality and consistency, is offering their own answer to those problems with some of their latest keyswitches, announced this at this year's Computex computing convention, held yearly in Taipei, Taiwan.

One of the most common (and annoying) ways we see frictional wear as gamers analog stick drift, which occurs when the potentiometers beneath your analog sticks begin to wear out or get debris caught in them. Cherry has two of their own switches that look to prevent this issue, the MK and IK switches. Cherry name is so synonymous with their MX switches that you might think the company's name is Cherry MX, but these two switches help prove otherwise.

Fortnite Is Finally Back On iOS In The US; Here's How To Download It

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 08:24

Fortnite has returned to iOS after nearly five years away from the platform in the US. A lengthy legal drama between Fortnite developer Epic Games and Apple saw the two sides pitted against each other over Apple's digital storefront business practices. A recent ruling by a judge forced Apple to let Fortnite back on the platform, though soon after, Apple had blocked Epic's app submission on one last technicality that kept the game from reappearing on iOS last week.

But now, it's downloadable. It won't appear in search quite yet, but you can download Fortnite on iOS here.

Fortnite is BACK on the App Store in the U.S. on iPhones and iPads... and on the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the E.U! It’ll show up in Search soon!

— Fortnite (@Fortnite) May 20, 2025 Epic versus Apple timeline

The Epic versus Apple saga began when Epic tried offering a more direct payment method for players to make in-game purchases, complete with a cheaper price tag attached to them, thereby circumventing Apple's payment system and thus the tech giant's 30% cut of any and all transactions. For this, Apple removed the game from the App Store and the two sides fought it out in court for the next several years. If you're curious, here's the timeline of events:

Switch 2's Hyrule Warriors Will Delve Into Zelda Lore That Fans Have Been Wondering About

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 06:37

Nintendo is billing Switch 2's upcoming Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment as "the story leading into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom," giving players the chance to participate in the Imprisoning War that occurred during Hyrule's ancient past. According to developer Koei Tecmo, the game will also delve further into the lore and characters from this mysterious time period.

"This game takes place during the Imprisoning War, which is shown in fragments in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom," Koei Tecmo's Yosuke Hayashi said during Nintendo's latest Creator's Voice video. "In this Hyrule Warriors game, you'll see how the people of Hyrule contended with the threat of the original Ganondorf."

Though the war is the focal point of the story, Age of Imprisonment will also offer a deeper look at Hyrule itself. "As a story that you can only fully experience here, it doesn't just depict the battles of the Imprisoning War via a Warriors game. It also shows life in the kingdom of Hyrule after Princess Zelda is sent back in time," Koei Tecmo producer Ryota Matsushita explained.

If We Get Avowed 2, It'll Have To Make Do Without A Key Figure

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 06:01

Avowed game director Carrie Patel has announced that she's left developer Obsidian to become a game director at Oxenfree developer Night Dive, which is owned by Netflix.

Avowed launched in February for Xbox and PC, and it was a critical success. Microsoft, which owns Obsidian, never announced any stats about the game's commercial success, though.

After launch, Patel said she would like to see Obsidian spend more time in the Avowed world, with many taking that to mean a sequel. "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it," she said.

Apple TV's Sci-Fi Show Murderbot Is Based On This Award-Winning Book Series

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 05:42
See at Amazon

The new sci-fi series, Murderbot, premiered this month on Apple TV+ to strong critical reviews--which isn't surprising given the show's source material. Like many popular streaming series, Murderbot is not an all-new IP, but is instead an adaptation of a book series by Martha Wells called The Murderbot Diaries. The first book, a novella titled All Systems Red, was a big hit when it was published in 2017 and won several prestigious awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards for that year's best novella. Its six sequels have garnered strong reviews and honors as well. If you're interested in checking out the source material, the full series is available in several formats at Amazon--including hardcover, Kindle ebook, and Audible audiobooks.

The Murderbot Diaries Four-Book Collection (Hardcover) $44 (was $80)

The books and Apple TV+ series follow a security cyborg, which calls itself "Murderbot" (played by Alexander Skarsgard in the show), who becomes conscious and must hide its self-awareness by completing the dangerous--and often deadly--missions it's programmed for, despite wanting to hang out and watch TV instead.

While there are seven books in the series, one of the best ways to start is The Murderbot Diaries Four-Book Collection, which--as you can probably guess from the title--includes hardcover editions of the first four novellas in the series: All Systems Red, Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, and Exit Strategy. The collection is on sale for $44, saving you nearly 50% compared to its normal $80 price tag.

See at Amazon

The Murderbot Diaries Four-Book Collection will keep you busy for a bit, but it's not the full series, and you'll need to pick up Books 5-7 to complete the saga. Conveniently, all three are available now--in fact, all seven Murderbot Diaries books are available in standalone versions if you want to forego the four-book collection. Each volume has a hardcover edition, while a few have paperback editions available as well.

Network Effect (Book 5) and System Collapse (Book 7) are full-length novels, and Fugitive Telemetry (Book 6) is a standalone novella. All of the novellas are quick reads (160-176 pages), while Book 5 is twice as long as any other entry, and Book 7 is roughly 250 pages.

Anticipated Steam Game RoadCraft Is Out Now And Off To A Good Start

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 05:38

Crafting games like Minecraft aside, the vast majority of video games seem to embrace destruction over creation. Saber Interactive's new title, RoadCraft, takes a different approach. This game puts players in control of sites that have already been devastated by natural disasters and lets them choose how they want to rebuild the area around them.

RoadCraft is now out on Steam, and currently at No. 35 on the platform's most-played titles with just under 34,000 concurrent players. That's a very good start for a game considering the AAA titles it's competing with.

To a certain extent, RoadCraft is a crafting game, except it stays close to reality. Players can't simply take short cuts and skip past the clean up stage. Once the debris has been taken away, the rebuilding process begins. Laying down new roads is a part of that, but not the end. RoadCraft is designed to let the players decide where everything should go, and how they want to put it there.

The Most Recent Black Ops 6 Update Contains Double Jump And Wall-Running Code, But It's Not Being Used Yet

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 05:08

According to leakers and data miners, code for double jumping and wall-running has been added to Call of Duty with the latest update, but it remains unclear if this will be used for Black Ops 6 or Call of Duty 2025, if used at all.

Several reliable Call of Duty accounts on X: CharlieIntel, AndrewVN, and COD Warfare, all shared a look at the code in the new update, as well as video of it in action. It's important to note that the double jump and wall-running are not live in the actual game but instead are being demonstrated by someone who activated the code that was added. The movement looks similar to the movement in Black Ops 3, which originally introduced the controversial wall-running mechanic. It's been confirmed that a Black Ops 3 map, Fringe, is being remade for Black Ops 6 as part of Season 4. The map may not work without wall-running or significant changes, providing a possible reason for these being added.

As for what exactly this is being planned for, if it's going to be used at all, is unclear. It could be leftover code; it could be for a special mode in Black Ops 6 or used in this year's Call of Duty. While unannounced, it is rumored that Call of Duty 2025 is Black Ops 7 and a sequel to Black Ops 2. Black Ops 2 had a near future sci-fi setting, but with the sequel coming out the same year the game was set, it would likely get bumped to a farther out date. It would make sense that the futuristic Call of Duty game brought back the futuristic mechanics of wall-running and double jumps.

Star Wars 7-Game Nintendo Switch Collection Is 50% Off At Amazon

See at Amazon See at GameStop

If you love Star Wars and own a Nintendo Switch, you'll want to check out Amazon's deal on Star Wars: Heritage Pack. This rarely discounted collection of Star Wars games is on sale for $30 at Amazon and GameStop. Star Wars: Heritage Pack comes with seven classic Star Wars games, including the Jedi Knight and Knights of the Old Republic series. The $30 discount matches the best deal yet, and we don't expect it to remain in stock at Amazon for very long.

Star Wars: Heritage Pack $30 (was $60)

The physical edition of Star Wars: Heritage Pack typically sells for $60. Oddly enough, the digital version of the Star Wars: Heritage Pack used to sell for $80, but it has actually been removed from sale. In comparison, the physical edition was already a bargain at full price, but now you're getting each game for just over $4 each--which is far lower than the price of buying the games separately from the eShop.

Star Wars: Heritage collection pulls together seven classic Star Wars games:

  • Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
  • Star Wars Episode I Racer
  • Star Wars Republic Commando
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
  • Knights of the Old Republic (Downloadable)
  • Knights of the Old Republic 2 (Downloadable)

While the first five games are playable directly off the Switch cartridge, both Knights of the Old Republic are digital versions that need to be downloaded from the eShop--so make sure you have a good internet connection and a bit of space on your microSD card. Combined, the two KOTOR games clock in just shy of 30GB.

Lost In Play Is Releasing New Physical Editions Of Games With Offline Play And No Hidden Catches

Wed, 05/21/2025 - 04:06

Game preservation has grown tremendously over the last couple of years, and gaming culture brand Lost in Cult is also adding to these initiatives with a brand-new line of physical games. Aiming to do things differently, Lost in Cult is kickstarting its preservation effort with three games that will "redefine" what a physical release can be.

What's immediately noticeable here is that each of the games--Immortality, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow, and Thank Goodness You're Here--are being presented with original artwork, and they'll come packaged with a variant game cover, an essay booklet, poster, and more. More importantly, each game is up-to-date with its latest version and they're all playable offline. As for the price, these are listed for roughly $80 each on the UK-based site.

Lost in Cult added that preservation specialists Does It Play have assisted in testing the games, and each disc or cartridge features the game in its entirety at the point of release. That means no updates, no downloads, and no codes in the box.

Preorder at Amazon

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things premieres on Netflix later this year, but if you're looking to expand your knowledge of the sci-fi universe's mysterious lore before the last batch of episodes drop, there's a new book box set launching July 1 that includes three Young Adult novels featuring the characters from the series, and looks to be a good entry point to Stranger Things' sprawling expanded universe. If that sounds like something you're interested in, preorders for the Stranger Things Box Set Books 1-3 are available now for $35 at Amazon.

Stranger Things Novel Box Set, Books 1-3 (Paperback) $35 | Releases July 1

The Stranger Things Box Set includes the three YA novels set in the world of the hit Netflix show: Runaway Max, Rebel Robin, and Lucas on the Line.

While the box set is listed for $35, we expect that price could change before launch since buying the standalone versions of all three books is even cheaper than the box set. Preordering locks you in for Amazon's preorder price guarantee, which means you won't be charged until the order ships, and you'll only pay the lowest price if the cost drops between now and launch.

  2. Stranger Things: Rebel Robin -- $10.10 ($12)
  3. Stranger Things: Lucas on the Line -- $9.30 ($12)

Whether you pick up the box set or buy the books individually, it's worth noting that there are three more Stranger Things novels that are not part of the box set that are worth picking up as well. Unlike the first three novels, these are aimed at an adult audience.
