Lego Made An Adorable Arcade Cabinet Set, Available Now For $40

Sat, 08/02/2025 - 00:39
Preorder at The Lego Store

Lego has added to its growing lineup of video game hardware building sets with an adorable little arcade. Simply called Arcade Machine, this 468-piece set launched today, August 1, for only $40. It's one of dozens of new building sets up for grabs at the Lego Store. Unlike other gaming hardware sets in Lego's catalog, the Arcade Machine isn't themed around a real platform; this is a Lego original, but it will still clearly appeal to the same audience.

Lego Arcade Machine (468 pieces) $40 | Releases August 1

The completed build measures 6 x 4 x 3 inches and opens up to reveal a game room with a sofa, a tiny arcade cabinet, a CRT TV, and numerous decorations often found in game rooms. The items on the display shelves are a nice touch. Above the couch, you can display three game console boxes and a pair of minifigure-style statues. On the other side of the room above the TV, there's a sword mounted to the wall and what we can only assume is this guy's prized Lego Star Wars starship he spent a dozen hours building.

The room belongs to the "Gamer Minifigure," who has a five o'clock and shaggy hair. The set also comes with a tiny game controller for the minifigure to hold.

The arcade machine you're building here is called Space, a vertical shoot'-em-up for two players. When closed, the red and black cabinet looks appropriately retro thanks to its chunky proportions and several stickers. The marquee sticker has those classic block letters that make it look like each letter is a spaceship entering lightspeed, and the screen sticker has pixelated graphics.

If you insert coins in the slots on the front, they will fly back out through the coin return--just like when you tried to trick arcade cabinets into accepting pennies instead of quarters.

If you like the idea of building an arcade machine out of Lego bricks, it's worth noting that Lego partnered with Bandai Namco back in 2023 to add Pac-Man to its Icons lineup. The 2,651-piece display model measures 12.5 x 10 x 7 inches and has a lot of really impressive features, including a four-way joystick, an illuminated coin slot, adjustable game score display, and a mechanical maze to simulate a round of Pac-Man. Buildable Pac-Man, Blinky, and Clyde figures can be attached to the top of the cabinet. There's also a separate miniature arcade with a tiny Pac-Man cabinet and a minifigure. Just don't show Mr. Gamer Minifigure the tiny cabinet, as he might try to move it to his game room. Lego Icons: Pac-Man Arcade is in stock at Amazon for $270.

In case you missed it during San Diego Comic-Con, Lego fully unveiled the highly anticipated replica of Nintendo's Game Boy. The 421-piece display model comes with two buildable cartridges, three swappable lenticular screens, and two stands. The Lego Game Boy is available to preorder for $60 and releases October 1. As for the Switch 2, Nintendo said pricing for the system, along with physical and digital games and Nintendo Switch Online memberships, will not go up in price, at least not yet. Nintendo said, "Please note that price adjustments may be necessary in the future."

NBA 2K26 Is Getting A Major Upgrade To Player Movement (On Most Platforms)

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 23:17

NBA 2K26 is getting a major upgrade to ProPlay, the enhanced animation system available only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. 2K has called this year's upgrade the biggest change to player movement since 2K21, making the most of the consoles' extra power to move even further towards true realism.

ProPlay is a machine learning-powered technology that analyzes real NBA footage in order to translate that into more realistic gameplay and animations. In the latest edition of NBA 2K, ProPlay will power a new dynamic motion engine, improving the look of player movement on the court. The new motion engine will be especially noticeable when players are in the air, making sure they launch, plant, and cut in a realistic way.

Other improvements to ProPlay will be most appreciated by players who make use of advanced controls in NBA 2K, with a new and enhanced version of Rhythm Shooting on the way. The upgraded feature boasts more responsive jumpshots, for what aims to be a more skill-based style of gameplay.

Call Of Duty And Battlefield Are Getting New Games In The Same Year For The First Time Since 2021

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 22:01

With Battlefield 6's October 10 release date now locked in, it's confirmed that 2025 will see new releases in both the Battlefield and Call of Duty franchises. That's notable because it hasn't happened since 2021.

That was the year that the disappointing Battlefield 2042 was released, along with Call of Duty: Vanguard, which failed to sell up to expectations.

Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is confirmed for release in 2025 but it doesn't have a release date yet. It's rumored that the game will launch on November 14, which would be about a month after Battlefield 6 launches.

Battlefield 6 Will Have "Grounded" Skins: "I Don't Think It Needs Nicki Minaj"

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 21:32

Games like Call of Duty and Fortnite have welcomed all manner of licensed skins and wacky ones, but will Battlefield 6 follow suit? It doesn't sound like it.

Design director Shashank Uchil told DBLTAP that, "It has to be grounded. That is what BF3 and BF4 was--it was all soldiers, on the ground. It's going to be like this."

Uchil went on to say, "I don't think it needs Nicki Minaj." That is seemingly a reference to the DLC skin for Call of Duty that lets you play as Minaj. Instead, Uchil said the aim for Battlefield 6's skins is: "Let's keep it real, keep it grounded."

Mario Kart World Sales Race Ahead, Almost Tied With Switch 2

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 20:50

The first big game of the Switch 2 era has emerged, as Nintendo has sold almost as many units of Mario Kart World as actual Switch 2 consoles. In its Q1 financial results for the three months that ended on June 30, Nintendo reported that it had sold 8.67 million units, with Mario Kart World being responsible for 5.63 million of those sales. This is almost as many units sold as Switch 2 consoles sold, indicating a very high attach rate.

To put this into context, it is worth noting that Nintendo launched the Switch 2 with a bundle deal that included Mario Kart World. Given that the game has an MSRP of $80--and Nintendo rarely drops the price on its evergreen titles--it did make financial sense to grab the bundle and save $30 in the process.

The game also has a long way to go before it dethrones Nintendo's best-selling game of all time, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The Switch game has reached lifetime sales of 68.86 million units, but these are still very early days for Mario Kart World. There will be some competition on the way with Drag X Drive, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A this year, but it'll be interesting to see if Mario Kart World will enjoy the same level of longevity as its predecessor. There are also plenty of third-party games on the way, as this week's Nintendo Direct showed off 25 games headed to the Switch 2 throughout the year and well into 2026.

Switch 2 Sales Blast Past Expectations, Now 6 Million Globally

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 20:29

The Switch 2 has been out for just over two months, and so far, the console is doing pretty well for Nintendo. In its Q1 financial results for the three months that ended on June 30, Nintendo says it sold 6 million Switch 2 units globally in the seven weeks since launch, which has led to several records being broken.

The hybrid console has been a hot commodity since it went on sale, exceeding the expectations of Nintendo. The company says it still expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles during its current financial year, which ends in March 2026. Meanwhile, Nintendo sold 0.98 million Switch consoles, pushing the lifetime sales of that device up to 153.10 million units sold.

Switch 2 lifetime sales to date

"Currently, demand for Nintendo Switch 2 is exceeding supply in many countries, and we regret the inconvenience this is causing our consumers," Nintendo said. "We will continue to strengthen our production and supply systems to deliver as much Nintendo Switch 2 hardware as possible."

A Complete History of gamescom and gamescom ONL

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 18:37

When I was growing up, E3 was one of the events in the calendar that I looked forward to the most. From console reveals to star-studded conferences, the Electronic Entertainment Expo was a series of corporate conferences that somehow felt like The Oscars, Comic-Con and Glastonbury combined. It was there that Final Fantasy VII Remake and The Last Guardian were finally shown (at the same conference); where then Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé made his public debut; and the venue where Keanu Reeves told a packed LA auditorium that they were all breathtaking. Yet for all its show-stopping game and console reveals, after 2020, it was the show itself that stopped, with the last in-person E3 taking place in 2019.

Luckily for mourning gamers, there was always another world-leading interactive entertainment show that connected fans and industry folk with demos, head-turning announcements and best-in-class community events: Germany's gamescom. Where E3 was an event that was media-only for most of its existence, gamescom was always--and very much continues to be--a public-facing celebration of games and gamers; a convention that is just as brilliant for inspiring world-beating cosplay as it is for connecting journalists with publishers and industry folks in the business area. E3 may be gone, but gamescom is still here, having established itself as the world's biggest and best gaming event.

Since 2019, gamescom has begun hosting its own games announcements, with the annual Geoff Keighley-hosted gamescom Opening Night Live gaining a reputation for delivering a non-stop cavalcade of exciting reveals. With gamescom's annual August celebration now comfortably the largest gaming event in the world--and with new gamescom sister events now delighting gamers in Brazil and Singapore (gamescom Asia is moving to Thailand for its next event)--it feels like the right time to celebrate the legacy of gaming's most beloved event. So, without further ado, here's a history of how Cologne's once humble convention went on to change the game forever.

Battlefield 6 Portal Map Creator Makes It Easier Than Ever To Design And Play

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 12:27

Battlefield 2042 introduced the Portal map creation tools to the franchise. But later this year, Battlefield 6 will take things even further with an overhauled map-creation toolset for the upcoming shooter. Now, DICE and EA have shared a video that offers a brief glimpse at the new Portal mode and what it's bringing to the table.

The new Portal mode allows players to build, share, and play their custom maps with more options than ever before. One of the new tools is a spatial editor powered by Godot that gives creators the chance to spatially edit maps and move around preexisting elements at will. Portal also includes custom and AI scripting that lets players create unique UI and direct NPC combatants on their battlefields. Any experience made with Portal will be available to other players through the community section.

Portal will also include modifiers that let players change the rules of the game. That includes the ability to set up one-shot kills, closed weapons, and many others. More intriguingly, player progression and XP gain are fully enabled during Portal mode.

Castlevania Animated Series Is Getting A Limited-Edition Blu-Ray Box Set

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 11:20
Preorder at Amazon Preorder at Crunchyroll

Netflix's Castlevania animated series is finally releasing in box set format on September 30, but it's currently only expected to be available as a pricey limited edition. Revealed this week, Castlevania: The Complete Series Limited Edition is a $155 Blu-ray box set featuring Seasons 1-4 of the hit animated adaptation. It's packaged in collectible, faux-woodgrain box containing an art book, Ouija board, Tarot deck, and more. Preorders are available now at Amazon and the Crunchyroll Store.

Castlevania: The Complete Series Limited Edition (Blu-ray)

Notably, this collection does not come with either season of Nocturne. Season 1 of the follow-up series released on Blu-ray last fall, but Season 2 is still stuck on Netflix. To complete your Castlevania Blu-ray collection, you can pick up Nocturne Season 1 on sale for only $17 (was $40) at Amazon. Prices in the sub-$20 range for individual seasons of the show are what make Castlevania: The Complete Series a steep ask at full price. At $155, the Limited Edition Complete Series costs nearly $100 more than the cost of buying the Seasons 1-2 bundle ($17), Season 3 ($19.53), and Season 4 ($20) separately.

Build your bundle Castlevania: The Complete Series - Limited Edition $155 | Releases September 30

Castlevania: The Complete Series comes with all four seasons of the original animated Netflix show across six Blu-ray discs. The total runtime for Castlevania's 32 episodes is 13 hours and 20 minutes; episodes range from 22-31 minutes each. Castlevania: The Complete Series is bundled inside a woodgrain-style box with decorative gold trim and a portrait of the main characters.

Here's the full list of physical and on-disc extras that come with the Limited Edition:

  • 72-page Art Book
  • Ouija Game Board with Planchette
  • Castlevania Tarot Card Deck
  • 2 Window Cling Art Pieces
  • Collector's Box
  • On-disc bonus content:
    • Art Galleries
    • Storyboards
    • Trailers
    • Production Animatics
    • Voice Actor Interviews

Castlevania debuted on Netflix in 2017 with a four-episode arc. It was a huge hit out of the gate. Season 2's eight episode arc dropped in 2018 and was followed up by two 10-episode seasons in 2020-21.

It's not very likely that this collection will actually launch at its current $155 price point. Blu-rays, and especially TV series box sets, often start high before receiving discounts ahead of launch. You won't be charged for your preorder until it ships, and Amazon will automatically adjust your order total to reflect the lowest price offered until launch.

All that said, Castlevania: The Complete Series probably won't be the economical way to own the great animated series on Blu-ray. That could change if a standard edition box set without the collectibles pops up. But if you can stomach potentially paying $155, the Limited Edition does look like a nice collectible and display piece for big fans of the Konami franchise and Netflix's stylish adaptation.

Preorder at Amazon Preorder at Crunchyroll Castlevania Netflix Animated Series on Blu-ray

We've listed all of the Castlevania Blu-rays below for comparison. Buying the first two seasons together is cheaper than grabbing them separately, but there is a Season 1 bundle that includes a cool T-shirt for $20.

Battlefield 6 Boss Explains The Game's New Destruction Elements

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 10:02

Earlier this year, EA showed off some of the destructible elements in Battlefield 6. That glimpse of destruction you can wreak was amplified in the recently released multiplayer trailer for the game. But if you were hoping to be able to knock down every building on the map, then you may be disappointed, because the game's Tactical Destruction system will only offer so much leeway.

EA executive vice president Vince Zampella told PCGamesN that the Tactical Destruction system gives player "unparalleled levels of freedom." However, he reasons that if it was possible to completely destroy all of the buildings on the map, then the system wouldn't reflect the original intentions of the dev team.

"We make maps very purposefully for fun, combat sight lines, and performance," said Zampella. "So if you're able to control that destruction, [it can still be] different, because you might blow up this building one time, this building another, or nothing at all. That's where the flexibility comes in. But even when they are destroyed, the map is still full. We guarantee you that the map is still fun to play. So it's about making a map and then making multiple versions of that map that are all equally balanced and fun to play."

Square Enix announced that Octopath Traveler 0, a new entry in the Octopath series, will launch on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC on December 4. The new RPG takes story and gameplay elements from the smartphone game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, retooled into a new standalone, offline single-player title, giving fans a new way to experience the narrative. Preorders for the game are available now, and there are multiple versions up for grabs--including a $50 standard edition you can grab at Amazon and Best Buy. There's also a $70 Digital Deluxe Edition and a massive $230 Collector's Edition available exclusively through Square Enix's online store. All three editions also include preorder bonuses for securing your copy ahead of time. Check out full details on all versions of the game below.

Preordering any version of Octopath Traveler 0 gets you the Travel Provisions Pack, which includes in-game items and skills to give you a slight edge during the early hours of the game. Here's the pack's full in-game contents:

  • 5x Healing Grape (M) item
  • 5x Inspiriting Plum (M) item
  • 5x Revitalizing Jam item
  • Icewind Mastery skill
Octopath Traveler 0 Standard Edition $50 | Releases December 4

This is the base version of Octopath Traveler 0. It includes the full base game, plus the Travel Provisions Pack if you preorder. Physical preorders are available for $50 at Amazon and Best Buy. Digital preorders are also available.

While you can preorder the Octopath Traveler physical standard edition for PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch, it's worth noting that the Switch 2 physical version is yet another Game-Key Card release. That means none of the actual game data is included on the cartridge, which instead works as physical DRM that lets you download and play the digital version of the game to your Switch 2. That said, the other three platforms all include the full game data on their physical media. The Switch 2 can play Switch 1 games, so you can purchase the Switch version of Octopath Traveler 0 if you want the game on cartridge. However, Square Enix is not offering an upgrade path for the Switch 1 version--so if you want the Switch 2 version with better performance and visual fidelity, you're stuck with the Game-Key Card or digital versions of the game.

Battlefield 6 PC Specs Revealed, And You Won't Need A Military-Grade PC To Run It

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 08:01

EA and DICE held their grand reveal for Battlefield 6 today, with streamers from around the world descending into Los Angeles to take their first crack at the game. Along with the first gameplay reveal came confirmation of BF6's PC requirements, and thankfully, you won't need a super-rig to get the best performance.

The minimum requirements to play Battlefield 6 on PC include a Nvidia RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 graphics card, as well as either an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor. Recommended specs don't venture much further than that, as the recommended graphics card is an RTX 3060Ti or Radeon RX 6700-XT, along with a i7 or Ryzen 7 processor.

It's important to note that the specs for the full release are different from those of the open beta test taking place during the next two weekends, though not by much. The full specs for the final release, as posted on the official Battlefield website, are below:

Battlefield 6 Campaign Teaser Details A World On The Brink Of War

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 06:57

While today's Battlefield 6 Multiplayer Livestream Event focused on the ways we'll be playing the game with friends, there were a few teasers for the other ways we can enjoy Battlefield 6 later this year. Along with a hint that the battle royale mode Operation Firestorm is coming back, EA and DICE provided a brief teaser for the single-player campaign, and it sounds like things in the world of Battlefield 6 aren't great.

The 30-second clip centered around a woman explaining what's happening in her world at the moment. She says the world as it was once known has "crumbled," and that "alliances that have held since World War II" are "gone." She pivots to say that "every crisis is an opportunity" before finishing with a quote from Game of Thrones--"chaos is a ladder."

Face the fury of war and rise. Are you ready?

— Battlefield (@Battlefield) July 31, 2025

Information provided by EA and DICE after the teaser aired shed a little more light on the specifics of Battlefield 6's story: The game takes place in the year 2027, and it will drop players into a world shaken by a high-profile assassination that has all but dismantled NATO. Trying to fill the void is Pax Armata, a massive private military corporation with "deep pockets and the latest tech."

Battlefield 6 Boasts PS5 Pro Enhancements, Won't Be Supported On Steam Deck

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 06:23

Battlefield 6 will, as expected, take advantage of performance-enhancement modes available on current hardware.

In a FAQ posted to the game's official site, EA confirmed that the upcoming FPS will come with options to boost game performance (frames per second) or image quality on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. These modes are largely standard for AAA titles these days, and the news comes just as the publisher finally clarified that Battlefield 6 will be ditching older hardware in favor of the current generation of consoles (except the Switch 2) and PC.

Additionally, Battlefield 6 will have "visual performance enhancements" that will be exclusive to the PS5 Pro version, though it's currently unclear what these enhancements will entail.

Battlefield 6's Class System Is A Welcome Return To Basics

Fri, 08/01/2025 - 06:05

Battlefield 6 will mark a return to the franchise's hallmark character classes after controversially changing the system in Battlefield 2042.

During Battlefield 6's multiplayer reveal, the developers emphasized, "We heard you loud and clear: You want the class system back," before confirming the return of Battlefield's four typical archetypes: the assault, engineer, support, and recon classes.

Each class will feature a signature weapon set, as well as gadgets and traits exclusive to them, and clearly the developers have shuffled around some of the familiar tools in Battlefield 6's revamped take on the system.
