Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Feels Like The 8-Bit Series Never Stopped

Game News - Thu, 04/17/2025 - 01:00

Ninja Gaiden has been on a long hiatus, and for fans of the classic 2D games on the NES, it's been even longer. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a classic throwback from publisher Dotemu (Streets of Rage 4, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge) and developer The Game Kitchen (Blasphemous series). But while Ragebound shows their respect for retro craftsmanship, it feels more like an evolution of the 8-bit originals than a broad reinvention. This is still an action-platformer at heart, serving as a respectful homage to Ninja Gaiden classics that picks up right where those left off.

During an extended hands-on with Ragebound I was able to try a lengthy chunk from the early hours of the game: a playable story sequence, tutorial, and then a few stages full of tense combat and new mechanics that fit right into the classic feel of Ninja Gaiden.

In Ragebound, you play primarily as Kenji Mozu, a protege of series protagonist Ryu Hayabusa who is left to defend their village when Ryu journeys to America. When a barrier between the human and demon realms tears apart, the village is beset by demons and Kenji steps up to be the new protector of the realm. But in the course of the story, the demo also introduced a secondary protagonist: the Black Spider ninja Kumori. The Black Spider Clan was a major antagonist in the later Team Ninja games, so in a way, this is bridging the gap between the two eras of the series.

Fallout 3 Remaster In The Works, But It's Not Arriving Anytime Soon - Report

Game News - Thu, 04/17/2025 - 00:46

While everyone waits for the leaked The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to officially get announced, Bethesda apparently has another storied RPG getting a similar treatment in the works: Fallout 3. A new report states the post-apocalyptic game is happening but won't arrive anytime soon.

Industry insider NateTheHate2, who previously nailed aspects of the Switch 2 reveal, replied to a question on X about whether Fallout 3 Remastered was "still happening." The answer was that it's "planned but won't be for a while." There was no other info provided, such as what developer might be tackling the reported project. Fallout 3 originally came out in 2008 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Industry insider NateTheHate2 responds to a question about a possible Fallout 3 Remastered.

Meanwhile, Bethesda Game Studios plans to make Fallout 5, though Todd Howard won't put "dates on anything." That's probably because the wait for more info on The Elder Scrolls VI has taken so long. Instead, for that fantasy-RPG franchise, players can look forward to the impending release of Oblivion Remastered, which has been heavily rumored and then appeared on the Virtuos website earlier this week. It's believed the game will launch next week, though no official confirmation has occurred yet.

Witcher 4 Beta Invites Are A Scam, Dev Warns

Game News - Thu, 04/17/2025 - 00:43

CD Projekt Red has warned Witcher fans that scammers are trying to take advantage of their enthusiasm for the franchise by sending scam emails inviting them to a Witcher 4 beta that does not exist. "This is a scam!" the developer said.

In a post on social media from the game's official account, the studio said it's taken steps to "take this fraudulent messaging down," but in case you still receive an email, be warned--it's a scam.

"If you receive any invites to or stumble upon news of one, we kindly ask you to report the scam using the tools available to you in your email client or the social media platform you are using," the developer said. "Remember: Professional monster slayers don't fall for scams; they see right through them and slay them!"

Niantic Layoffs Include 68 Employees After Selling Gaming Division

Game News - Thu, 04/17/2025 - 00:30

Niantic laid off 68 employees after the sale of its games business to the Saudi investment company, Scopely, last month. While the layoffs were already announced, the specific number of employees has now been revealed.

As spotted by Game Developer, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report published in California shows that at least 68 people will be losing their jobs at Niantic. The layoffs were processed on March 20 and will be carried out on May 20.

Last month, Niantic CEO John Hanke announced that the company would split into two separate companies--one now owned by Scopely and the other, Niantic Spatial, which is focusing on delivering "the promise of geospatial AI." Niantic has confirmed to Game Developer that Hanke's announcement was related to the WARN report, but had nothing else to say about the matter.

New Assassin's Creed Shadows Update Fixes More Bugs And PS5 Pro Graphical Issues

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 23:52

Ubisoft has released a new update for Assassin's Creed Shadows, and according to the patch notes, this one is designed to address several more issues in the game. Title update 1.0.3 will go live today, and while it's not nearly as massive as the previous patch, you can expect bug fixes and PS5 Pro improvements. Curiously, the patch will also temporarily deactivate the auto-sell feature in the game, as Ubisoft says that it has to work out some unexpected issues introduced by that function.

For PS5 Pro players, a graphical issue caused by activating the HDR and PSSR options will be fixed, and PS5 owners in general can expect several other crash-related bugs to be solved. For download sizes, the patch is quite small on PS5 and PC via Steam, while Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac users can expect a longer download session. You can see the full patch notes below.

In related news, Assassin's Creed Shadows is currently the second-best-selling game in the US for 2025, trailing behind Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds, which is still the best-selling game of 2025 so far. Ubisoft is also considering adding an even higher level of difficulty to the game in a future update.

Why A Minecraft Movie Took 10 Years To Come Out

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 23:31

A Minecraft Movie is now in theaters and it's putting up huge numbers, ranking as the No. 2 highest-grossing video game movie of all time after just two weeks in theaters. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has now discussed the movie, digging into how the movie could help grow the Minecraft video game. He also talked about why it took more than a decade to make the movie.

Speaking to Variety, Spencer said one way Microsoft may benefit from A Minecraft Movie is by bringing more people to the game who might not otherwise play.

"Maybe they don't play video games, and this is an opportunity for them to see it on the big screen, 'What is this Minecraft thing?' and get invested in it," he said.

FBC: Firebreak Will Feature Cross-Play Multiplayer

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 23:27

Remedy has announced that its Control spin-off multiplayer game will let players team up in The Oldest House regardless of their platform. That's because FBC: Firebreak will offer cross-play support for the cooperative FPS. In other words, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S owners can all play together when the game comes out this summer.

The official Control account on Instagram confirmed the inclusion of cross-play for FBC: Firebreak. "You'll be able to play FBC: Firebreak with up to two friends, no matter the platform," the post states. Keep in mind that Remedy has previously noted that FBC: Firebreak works in solo and duo modes as well. However, it's "optimized" for three players.

FBC: Firebreak was officially unveiled in October at an Xbox Partner Preview event. However, it was known that Remedy was working on a Control spin-off codenamed Condor before then. The FPS sees players assuming the roles of the Federal Bureau of Control (there's the FBC) agents to take on unnerving foes known as the Hiss. Intriguingly, the title will be available on Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus when it comes out later this year.

Destiny 2: The Edge Of Fate Reveal Announced For Next Month

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 23:16

It's been quite the year for Destiny players, and the game's evolution continues with the latest chapter, dubbed The Edge of Fate, getting revealed soon. No details were given outside of the reveal being a special livestream event on May 6, starting at 9AM PT/12PM ET.

"Developers will discuss the first expansion, The Edge of Fate, and much more during the event," Bungie said in a statement. With the events of The Final Shape having major repercussions for your Guardian, as well as the Vanguard, it feels like all bets are off when it comes to the story.

How the story is structured is something else. Following the launch of The Final Shape last year, Bungie announced changes to how it planned to deliver content, switching from Seasons to Episodes, while also announcing the future of Destiny 2 as Codename: Frontiers.

Xbox Game Pass Is "Not For Everybody," Phil Spencer Says

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 22:56

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has further discussed Xbox Game Pass, saying the subscription service is "not for everybody," and that if every Game Pass subscriber canceled their membership and decided to buy games outright instead, that would be good for Microsoft as well.

So who is Game Pass for? Spencer told Variety it can be a "healthy option for certain people," but he acknowledged that Microsoft isn't trying to get everyone to sign up.

"It's not for everybody. If you play one or two games a year, Game Pass probably isn't the right business model for you; you should just buy those two games, and that would make total sense," he said. "But I want you to have the choice. So we remain focused on everything that's on Game Pass is also available to buy."

Battlefield 6 Dev Clarifies Use Of SBMM In Playtest

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 22:17

The next Battlefield game doesn't even have an official name yet, but fans are already hands-on with an early build thanks to the new Battlefield Labs playtest program. That program has proved a headache for devs, with participants leaking footage in spite of NDAs, and starting rumors about the use of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM).

A rumor that Battlefield 6 would use SBMM, which likely originated from the playtest, has spread through the Battlefield community, with fans up in arms about its potential inclusion. Battlefield's lead producer David Sirland attempted to clarify the use of SBMM with playtesters, in a post that was later shared to Reddit.

"Just for clarity--saying SBMM is bad is not really useful. What you really want to say is 'Heavy SBMM where skill separation is a priority is bad,'" Sirland said in the post. "But that doesn't make skill as a factor in matchmaking bad wholesale, on the contrary we need a skill value to make balanced teams--no matter the ranges of skills total on a server. It wouldn't be fun if all high skill players ended up on the same team, would it?"

Switch 2 Reveal Doesn't Make Microsoft Nervous About Its Own Next-Gen Plans, Phil Spencer Says

Game News - Wed, 04/16/2025 - 22:16

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has reacted to the Switch 2 announcement, saying the company wants to support the console and that Nintendo's announcement of the system doesn't make Microsoft nervous about its own next-gen plans.

Speaking to Variety, Spencer said Microsoft has already supported the original Switch through titles like Minecraft, Pentiment, and Grounded. And looking ahead, Spencer said, "I want to support Switch 2."

"Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren't PC players, who aren't players on Xbox. It lets us continue to grow our community of people that care about the franchises that we have, and that's really important for us to make sure we continue to invest in our games," he said.
