Just Cause Creator Has A Bleak Take On State Of Gaming

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 02:45

Christofer Sundberg, who is known for his hot takes, has made another bold statement about the state of gaming. In an interview, Sundberg said he's observing things in the games industry today that he hasn't seen in his 30+ years making games.

"I've been making games for over three decades and never experienced such a desperate, cowardly (they call it 'risk averse'), and confused state of the business," Sundberg told wccftech. "After the acquisition / over-investing party during '21-'23, we are dealing with the hangover and it's been going on for three years."

Sundberg is referring to the video game boom from the pandemic, and how it seemingly has not paid off the way investors imagined. The result of this has been mass layoffs, game cancellations, and investors not spending as much on new projects.

Classic '90s Superhero Movie The Phantom Is Getting A New 4K Blu-ray Release

Superhero movies of the '90s were completely different to the blockbusters of today, and only a handful of them were hits at the box office. Sadly, 1996's The Phantom wasn't one of them, but you can revisit the pulp-classic adventure movie with a new 4K Blu-ray release. Starring Billy Zane as the legendary hero, The Phantom is priced at $45--or $25 for the standard Blu-ray--and it'll be released on April 14.

The Phantom (4K Blu-ray) $45 | Releases April 14

This new edition of The Phantom is a 4K restoration that uses the original camera negatives. The updated version was approved by the film's director, Simon Wincer, and the Blu-ray comes with reversible cover art and an O-card slipcase protective cover.

The first Blu-ray cover is based on the film's theatrical release poster art, featuring the hero delivering a knockout blow--and a nasty skull-shaped scar--to any villains on the receiving end of his fist. The second cover is based on the teaser poster, an atmospheric shot of Zane's character seated on his throne inside of his jungle lair.

There aren't many special features listed for this release, but several are brand-new. Wincer is joined by filmmaker Douglas Hosdale for an audio commentary track, there's a lengthy interview with Zane about the making of the movie, and composer David Newman talks about the film's score. The original theatrical trailer for The Phantom rounds out the selection of bonus materials.

The Phantom special features

  • Limited-edition reversible art and O-card slipcase
  • Audio Commentary by director Simon Wincer and filmmaker Douglas Hosdale (new)
  • Kismet in the Jungle: Interview with Star Billy Zane (new)
  • Slam Evil - Scoring The Phantom: Interview with composer David Newman (new)
  • Theatrical trailer

Plans to bring The Phantom to the big screen had been in the works for years, with Gremlins director Joe Dante aiming to bring the comic strip character to life in a cheeky manner on the silver screen. After he was fired from the project, Wincer took over, and the project took on a more serious--yet still self-aware--tone, with Zane landing the lead role. The movie loosely adapts story arcs from the original 30s strips, but it does retain the core mythology of the source material.

Zane stars as Kit Walker, the latest in a long line of masked avengers known as the Phantom. Regarded as an immortal hero and known as the "ghost who walks," Walker fights evil in the jungles of Africa and travels to New York City to stop a criminal genius from harnessing the power of three magical skulls. Unlike other superhero movies of the decade, The Phantom wears its inspiration on its sleeve and is unashamedly pulpy at times, echoing the two-fisted adventures of classic radio serials.

Starfield's PS5 Release Is Coming Very Soon - Report

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 02:05

After years of speculation, Starfield will reportedly finally make its way to PS5 next month. Reliable leaker Dealabs states that the sci-fi RPG is slated to launch April 7 on Sony's system, with preorders possibly beginning March 17 or 18.

This echoes a report from last month that mentioned Starfield arriving April 7 on PS5 with two editions. The only difference is that Dealabs claims these differing options are named standard and premium, instead of standard and deluxe. Dealabs also added pricing, with standard supposedly costing €49.99 and premium going for €69.99. It'll be intriguing to see whether these prices are similar in the US or possibly converted to $60/$80.

Starfield is set to get new story DLC, though game director Todd Howard has tempered expectations regarding Starfield 2.0 claims. "I think it's the kinda thing where if you like Starfield, we think you're going to love this," the Bethesda boss told Kinda Funny last month. There's no release date yet for the expansion, though releasing with the PS5 version would make sense.

Resident Evil Requiem Is Blowing Up On Steam

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 01:58

Just one day after launch, Resident Evil Requiem has already surpassed the player counts of both Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village on Steam, making it the most popular entry in the series to date.

As reported by GamesIndustry, Requiem's all-time peak on Steam was 344,214 on February 28, according to player tracker SteamDB, just one day after it arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Eurogamer noted that this peak was double that of Resident Evil 4 Remake (168,191) and triple that of Resident Evil Village (106,631), making Requiem the biggest launch in the franchise's history thus far.

Of course, Requiem is available on other platforms as well--including the Epic Games Store--so the true player count could be significantly higher than what is reported. However, with just Steam data alone, Requiem saw more players than RE4 Remake and RE Village combined. And thanks to Requiem's release, GI.Biz noted that RE4 Remake and RE Village saw a gradual increase in player counts since February 15, likely in anticipation of Requiem since it serves as a sequel to RE Village.

GTA 6 Reportedly Added To PlayStation Database, Igniting Preorder Speculation

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 01:39

Keen-eyed observers have noted that title IDs for Grand Theft Auto 6 have now been added to the PlayStation database, leading some to speculate that Rockstar is preparing to start preorders for the title.

X account PlayStation Game Size, which often reports on backend information for games on PlayStation, posted that two title IDs for GTA 6 have recently been added to the PlayStation database. Title IDs are a unique code assigned to each game on PlayStation, and their appearance in the system will often be a precursor to preorder sales, or other changes on a game's store page. PlayStation Game Size adds that they "expect we’ll see something about the game soon, probably the start of preorders."

Oddly enough, Grand Theft Auto 6 has two title IDs, while most games usually only require one. While reports suggest that GTA 6 will have three editions on release, PlayStation Game Size says that different editions of a game will still use the same title ID, leaving the second ID a mystery. Some have speculated that the second ID may instead be for a standalone GTA 6 Online app, but we'll have to wait for more news from Rockstar to be certain.

Santa Monica Studio Is Working On A New Series In The God Of War Universe, Reports Suggest

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 01:28

Rumors about the next project helmed by Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog have been making the rounds since 2021, but a fresh influx of information suggests the project will be a new franchise set within the God of War universe.

In a LinkedIn post that has since been deleted, but not before it was screenshotted and posted to the ResetEra forums, a former senior writer at Santa Monica said they had "helped shape the narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe."

The LinkedIn leak has been backed up by other reliable sources, and seems to fit with prior rumors about the project. Industry insider NateTheHate posted some information to X, saying that he's heard that the game will be set in the God of War universe and will feature Faye as its protagonist. He also said that the game will have more of a focus on action than those in GoW's Norse saga. Nate added that he expects the game to be announced this year, with a release following in the first half of next year.

Sonic The Hedgehog Actor Jim Carrey Wasn't Cloned For Awards Show, Organizers Say

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 01:27

Jim Carrey's appearance at France’s Cesar Awards has generated plenty of buzz online, but not for the heartfelt speech he delivered after he received an honorary award. Instead, conspiracy theorists are convinced that an impersonator stood in for the Sonic the Hedgehog actor that night, claiming that he looked like a completely different person. In response, the general delegate of the Cesar Awards, Gregory Caulier, says that Carrey did attend the event and his participation required months of planning.

"Jim Carrey's visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy's invitation," Caulier said to Variety. "Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words. For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance."

After a make-up artist's claims that they had impersonated Jim Carrey for the event began gaining traction online, prosthetic make-up effects expert David Malinowski disputed the assertion. "He is absolutely not wearing a mask. In my expert, professional opinion, that’s 100 percent Jim Carrey, and Jim Carrey is not wearing any prosthetics either," Malinowski told LAD Bible.

Netflix On Why It Gave Up On Buying Warner Bros. - "We Didn't Need It"

Game News - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 01:15

A Netflix executive who championed the company's deal to buy Warner Bros. Discovery has now explained why the streaming giant is abandoning plans to buy the Harry Potter and Batman company. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Bloomberg that it was an "incredibly unique opportunity" to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, adding that the company "definitely" was serious.

However, "We didn't need it," he said (via Deadline). "We had a very tight range that we'd be willing to pay and made that offer back when we closed this deal."

Sarandos went on to say that Paramount's bidding process was "unusual" and "irrational." Paramount was perceived to be the front-runner to buy WBD in 2025, but Netflix swooped in and announced a definitive agreement with WBD on December 5. Paramount came back with a direct appeal to investors, and, after raising its buyout price and offering numerous incentives, ultimately got the WBD board on February 26 to say Paramount's offer of $31/share for the whole company was superior.

Pokemon Pokopia Review - The Pokemon Anniversary Gift I Didn't Know I Wanted

Games Reviews - Tue, 03/03/2026 - 00:00

I audibly gasped. My small community of Pokemon friends had been steadily growing in the first hour or so of Pokemon Pokopia, and now Professor Tangrowth asked me to build a house and mark it as my own. I could even invite another Pokemon to live there with me, he said. You mean I can have a Squirtle roommate?! I built my new house as quickly as I could and invited Squirtle to come live in it, and he happily agreed. Childhood dream fulfilled.

A few days later, Squirtle told me he wanted to move out.

Heartbroken and with nothing to do to change Squirtle's mind, I pressed on. I was determined to learn more, earn more, and do more, so that, one day, Squirtle will come back. Someday I'll make a new house and I'll invite Squirtle to live with me again. Maybe he just wanted his own bedroom? Admittedly, the leaf hut is not a lot of space. Maybe he didn't like my decor at the time--a few items I had arranged slapdash to fulfill the housing requirements.

Bungie Says The Deeper Players Get Into Marathon, The More Fun They’re Having

Game News - Mon, 03/02/2026 - 23:03

Ahead of its release on March 5, Marathon developer Bungie has addressed fan feedback for its extraction shooter following the Server Slam test. With launch day fast approaching, the studio says that it has addressed several issues like input lag and communication bugs, while it'll be keeping an eye on ammo economy, user interface updates, and more. The developer also mentioned that the more time players spent in the game, the more fun they reported having as they dug deeper into Marathon's gameplay.

"Many Runners have maxed out their Faction Rep, adopted a Rook or two, and braved the haunted hallways of Hauler," Bungie said. "We've also heard from people saying the deeper they get into progression, the more fun they are having. Tau Ceti can be unforgiving, and we can't wait to see you next week."

Bungie says that the request for additional queue options has been logged with the team. "Currently, you have the ability to run as a Solo--be it as Rook or as a Runner in a solo lobby)--or you can queue in with a duo or a full trio, but we have heard the feedback about duo dedicated lobbies, Bungie added. Other areas being looked at are keybinding, time-to-kill, and lowering heat generation on core movement for cleaner chases and disengages.
