Rockstar May Embrace User-Generated Content In Grand Theft Auto 6 - Report

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 04:42

The arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6 at some point later this year remains one of the biggest stories in gaming. It's not a question of whether it will be one of the biggest releases of 2025; it's about how big it can be at launch and in the years to come. Now, a new report suggests that Rockstar Games is going to expand GTA 6 even further by turning the game into a platform for user-generated content.

According to Digiday, Rockstar is in talks with experienced Roblox and Fortnite creators in addition to GTA mod creators about creating customized experiences in Grand Theft Auto 6. It's not that far of a conceptual leap, since there are already numerous Grand Theft Auto 5 mods, and because Rockstar purchased FiveM, which lets players take part in modified versions of the game with hundreds of other users.

The belief among some industry insiders is that Rockstar will follow the example of Fortnite and allow users to create customized locations and items that could be purchased by other players or accessed via subscriptions. Any money earned from these creations would likely include a sizable share for Rockstar itself, while also giving modders the chance to make money as well.

Advance Wars Meets Mars Attacks In This Strategy Game From Relic Entertainment

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 04:41

Relic Entertainment has announced Earth vs. Mars, a new turn-based strategy game that looks like a mash-up of Advance Wars, Mars Attacks, and irresponsible genetic manipulation. Currently scheduled to be released on PC in Summer 2025, the game pits humans against Martians in a battle for supremacy over our corner of the cosmos.

Like Nintendo's Advance Wars games, you'll get to pick from several commanders to lead Earth's military forces, with each battlefield leader having unique abilities that you can make tactical use of.

Earth vs. MarsGallery

While you'll have access to military hardware like tanks and artillery, the real secret weapon here is the Splice-O-Tron that can be used to transform "volunteers" into powerful super-soldiers when you add some animal DNA to the mix. Some of the interesting combinations teased include the fast-moving cheetah-fly, powerhouse human-rhino hybrids, and the deadly squirrel-cow infantry.

Fairgame$ Release Window, Story, Trailer, And Everything We Know About Sony's New Live-Service Game

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 03:03

Sony's big push into the live-service market has been hit and miss, and the company is continuing to invest in the space with the next game from former Assassin's Creed boss Jade Raymond. Her team at the PlayStation-owned Haven Studios is making a heist-themed competitive game for PS5 and PC called Fairgame$--and yes, it's really styled that way.

Described as a "fresh, modern take on the heist genre," Fairgame$ aims to be a competitive heist game where people steal from the rich to "rebalance the scales" in a society where billionaires hold an increasingly large share of the wealth. While the game was conceived of years ago, this setup is certainly something that remains topical today.

Not much has been said or shown of the game, but there have been some details released so far, which we're compiling together in this post.

Phil Spencer Gives Update On Missing-In-Action Rare Game Everwild

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:56

It's been over 5 years since Rare's in-development project Everwild was announced by Xbox, and details have been thin on the ground ever since. In a recent interview, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said that Everwild is proceeding well.

Speaking to XboxEra, Spencer mentioned a few games in passing that he's excited for. Everwild was one of those games, with Spencer confirming that Rare is making "progress" on the project. "I do think the work that Double Fine's doing and how [Double Fine founder Tim Schafer] kind of solicits feedback from the team," Spencer said in part. "And the other one, I'll say because I was recently out at Rare. It’s nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they're making."

Spencer also mentioned State of Decay 3 as part of the same section, with the Xbox boss calling the series "one that I love." Later in the interview, Spencer said that studios like Rare are allowed more time to make long-in-the-oven games like Everwild because Xbox's current slate is already packed with games. He also indicated that the next studio he's going to visit is The Coalition, the stewards of the Gears of War franchise.

Days Gone Remastered's $10 Upgrade Won't Apply To The PS Plus Version

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:32

Days Gone Remastered will be an affordable $10 upgrade to anyone who owns the 2019 survival-action game, but there is a catch here. Like several other PlayStation games that have gotten the PS5 remaster treatment, the upgrade doesn't apply to the PS Plus version currently available in the Game Catalog, or the one that was given away back in April 2021 as a PS Plus freebie.

Naturally, this hasn't gone over well with fans who have taken to online forums like Reddit (via Eurogamer) to voice their complaints. As several people have noted, PS Plus is a paid-for subscription service, and in comparison, Microsoft allows Game Pass subscribers to upgrade to premium editions of new releases, allowing them to access the benefits of their upgraded games--like early access--at an attractive price. It is worth noting that you'll still need to purchase the base game on Xbox, if you plan to keep playing without a Game Pass subscription.

Another point of contention brought up is that Sony still allows its users to purchase DLC for PS Plus games, and many see the "Remaster" upgrade of Days Gone as a somewhat similar piece of content that can be added onto a game. "This is as stupid as requiring someone to pay for the full game when purchasing a DLC for a PS Plus game," CoolGur878 wrote. "And, mind you, PS Plus is not a free service."

Fortnite Shows Why Cheaters Never Prosper After Epic Successfully Sues Pro Player

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:25

Epic Games has sent a loud and clear message to the cheaters and hackers of the world about Fortnite. The company "took legal action" against a pro player called RepulseGod and banned them from ever participating again in organized tournaments for the battle-royale game.

On top of that, RepulseGod, whose name is Morgan Bamford, had to return prize money from Fortnite back to Epic. Eurogamer reports that the company then donated the reclaimed funds to the Child's Play Charity, which provides games and technology to children's hospitals. Last but not least, RepulseGod released a public apology video on YouTube summarizing the situation--which the Fortnite Competitive account on X also highlighted.

"Cheating in tournaments ruins the fun for the players who earned their spot in tournaments, and I apologize to the Fortnite community for my actions," RepulseGod posted in text on the apology video. "I won't ever cheat in Fortnite again."

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:22

Pro skater Tyshawn Jones said that he's going to be in a new remastered Tony Hawk game, despite Activision not announcing any new ones.

"I'm in a Tony Hawk [game] coming out, so they got a new one they're remastering...that's about to come out. I was in the last one," Jones said in an interview with The Breakfast Club. He was was one of the new playable pro skaters added to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2.

Jones specifically mentioned that the unannounced game was a remaster. Although it's unclear which game he's referring to, he may have also meant remakes. Last year, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake was reportedly rejected in order for developer Vicarious Visions to focus on more Call of Duty content. However, Tony Hawk himself came out and confirmed that the series will continue on in some form.

PS6 Launching In 2028 "Feels Right," Former PlayStation Boss Says

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:17

The PS5 is currently riding high, but everyone always wants to know what's coming next. It's been reported that the PS6 is in the works, and according to former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, the system launching in 2028 feels "right."

Speaking to VentureBeat, Yoshida the last console cycle was about seven years long, and if that holds again, the PS6 would debut in 2027, and he said that feels "a bit too early." Stressing that he has no inside information about the PS6, Yoshida said, "If the next PlayStation comes out in 2028, that feels right to me."

He added that the next Xbox might be planned for 2028 as well, based on a leak from Microsoft, but of course, this may not be true and plans can always change. In any event, Yoshida speculated that there is a chance that the next PlayStation and Xbox devices come out in the same year.

How Long Is Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii?

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:00

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii introduces itself as a spinoff in the vein of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Meaning that, instead of looking at a mammoth of a story that can take well over 30 hours at minimum, it's a far smaller slice, this time placing Goro Majima as the main character.

Despite the absurdity of its premise, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is indeed canon, the story taking place after the events of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Majima has amnesia, however, which leads to a fresh start for a standalone tale that is progressively intertwined with the usual swings and roundabouts of a Yakuza story.

If you're wondering how much there actually is in the game, both from a main story and side activity standpoint, this guide covers how long Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is and what you can expect to find.

Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii Review - You Can Teach An Old Dog New Tricks

Games Reviews - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 02:00

Welcome back to beautiful Hawaii: land of golden beaches, crystal-clear waters, and The Mad Dog of Shimano roving the seas as a swashbuckling pirate. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is exactly as it sounds, with Goro Majima returning as a fully fledged protagonist for the first time since 2015's Yakuza 0. Unlike that game--which saw Kiryu share the spotlight--the focus this time around is squarely on everyone's favorite eyepatched goofball: the perfect leading man for one of the series' more bizarre entries. No one commits to the bit quite like Majima, which is partly why Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii avoids the risk of diminishing returns, despite being the third Like a Dragon game in the past 15 months. This high-seas adventure doesn't stack up against the series' best, but the pirate theme does just enough to differentiate a jaunty return to the Hawaii.

Set six months after the events of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii opens with Majima waking up on a beach somewhere in the Pacific. He has no memory of how he got there, his name, or his storied past as a crime boss/cabaret manager/construction-company owner. All he knows is that a young boy named Noah saved his life, and for whatever reason, Hawaii and the surrounding islands are now full of cutlass-wielding pirates who look like they've been pulled out of Tortuga during the 1600s. What follows is the hunt for a long-lost legendary treasure that sees Majima reinvent himself as the pirate captain of his own ship, complete with an ever-expanding crew of new and familiar characters. Stuffing the coffers with booty might be the end goal, but this is also a tale about the friends we made along the way.

Like Infinite Wealth before it, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii focuses on a strong sense of friendship and camaraderie. It's frequently eccentric, but its outlandish nature is also mixed with an earnestness and sentimentality that reflects its endearing protagonist. Since Yakuza 0, Majima's Mad Dog persona has felt like a mask he puts on to cope with the trauma he endured early in life. He's always been a caring character, but the way he often shows this is through violence because he doesn't want to be hurt again. Amnesia is an overused trope, yet it's rare to see it affecting an established character we've known for 20 years, allowing for a personality reset of sorts. With no memories of his past, Majima subconsciously lets his guard down and shaves off the rougher edges that define the protective shield he puts up. He still throws himself into deadly situations with utmost glee, hinting that the Mad Dog persona and his masochistic side may have always been a part of him. But his interactions with the crew, and especially Noah, feel like Majima revealing his true self.

TLOU Boss Neil Druckmann Says He Doesn't Have The Confidence To Plan Ahead For Sequels

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 01:49

While Naughty Dog has only teased the third installment in The Last of Us franchise, co-writer and director Neil Druckmann discussed recently sequels are never part of his initial plans. Talking along with Sony Santa Monica head Cory Barlog at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, the two chatted with an audience about their doubts about their creative process.

After taking a few pre-submitted audience questions, one came across which asked about the development of sequels and how to maintain character development over multiple games. Druckmann said he goes one game at a time and doesn't think that far ahead.

"That's a very easy question for me to answer, because I never think about multiple games because I'm the game in front of us is so all-consuming," he responded (via IGN). "I think you're jinxing yourself if you're starting to think about the sequel when you're working on the first game. So when I was making The Last of Us 2, yeah, sure. Every once in a while an idea pops in your head of where it might go if we get the chance to do another one. But I just approach it as, 'what if I never get to do another one?' I'm not saving some idea for the future. If there's a cool idea, I'm doing my best to get it into here."

Former PlayStation Boss Says He Had "No Choice" But To Take Indies Job

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 01:34

After a 38-year run at Sony, former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida bid farewell to the company earlier this year. In a new interview detailing his career, the former executive commented on how he was left with "no choice" but to step down from his position as president of SIE Worldwide Studios in 2019, as then PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan offered him the opportunity to either lead a new indies initiative for Sony or leave the company.

"Moving from first-party to indies? Well, I had no choice. When Jim asked me to do the indie job, the choice was to do that or leave the company. But I felt very strongly about the state of PlayStation and indies. I really wanted to do this," Yoshida said to VentureBeat. "I believed I could do something unique for that purpose. That was the bigger change for me personally, moving from first-party to indies, than leaving the company this year."

Yoshida's position would be filled by Hermen Hulst, who was also recently co-CEO of SIE alongside Hideaki Nishino for several months. While Yoshida is no longer working for Sony, he hasn't retired from the gaming industry and he currently works alongside indie publishers and developers as an independent advisor. Yoshida added that his ultimate goal during his final years at Sony was to cultivate a relationship with indie developers that would make his position obsolete.

Xbox Showcases Will Now Have PlayStation And Nintendo Logos

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 00:46

Going forward, Microsoft will be showing PlayStation and Nintendo logos along with the Xbox logo during its future gaming showcases.

For shipping on PlayStation, on Steam," Xbox boss Phil Spencer said in an interview with Xbox Era. "People should know the storefronts where they can get our games, but I want people to be able to experience our Xbox community in our games and everything we have to offer, on every screen we can."

He explained that discussions to add these logos took place in June, but by the time Microsoft made its decision, the assets weren't ready. He also reiterated Xbox's multiplatform strategy, as it allows Microsoft to create bigger games while also supporting its own hardware and platform services.

Xbox Boss Says He's No Longer Trying To Move PS5 Players To Xbox

Game News - Wed, 02/19/2025 - 00:39

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has discussed why he's no longer trying to get all PlayStation and Nintendo players to come over to Xbox and is instead trying to meet players where they are.

"I'm not trying to move them all over to Xbox anymore," he said on the XboxEra podcast (via VGC). "We're all so invested in where our games are; let's just allow more people to play."

Spencer said it is important to invest in Microsoft's own platforms, in part because it makes a full 100% of revenue from first-party game sales, compared to 70% on PS5 and Switch, with the other 30% going to PlayStation and Nintendo, respectively. But even at 70%, that's "helpful to us being able to build great portfolios," Spencer said.
