The Animaniacs Almost Made The Game Boy Advance Zany To The Max With Long-Lost Game

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 02:48

The Animaniacs was the follow-up series to Tiny Toon Adventures and introduced young audiences to the Warner Bros. characters Wakko, Yakko, and their sister, Dot. The animated program was a huge hit, spawning merchandise, a movie, and nine video games--including the two spin-off games focused on Pinky and The Brain. Recently, however, a never-released tenth game has been unearthed, and it would have been released on Game Boy Advance.

The preservationist group Hidden Palace released information about the game, Animaniacs: Hollywood Hypnotics, and even uploaded it so players can now play the long-lost game. You can watch some gameplay here as well.

Hello again! Presenting: A nearly complete build of Animaniacs: Hollywood Hypnotics for the Game Boy Advance, a game that was thought to have been lost until now! pic.twitter.com/5x4gHghzWU

— The Hidden Palace (@HiddenPalaceOrg) June 29, 2025

Like similar games from the franchise, the game sees players take control of the Warner siblings, facing off against the genetically enhanced lab mice Pinky and the Brain. The Brain wanted to take over the famous Warner Bros. Water Tower--and the Warners' lair--and turn it into a rocket. The title of the game came from the duo using hypnosis to put their plan into action.

FBC: Firebreak Launch Wasn't What Studio Hoped For, But Remedy Isn't Giving Up

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 02:41

Alan Wake and Control developer Remedy Entertainment launched its newest game, the co-op FPS FBC: Firebreak, in mid-June. The game didn't exactly take the world by storm, with Steam concurrents topping out under 300 over the last week, and Remedy itself admitting it "had hoped for a better launch." But Steam concurrent numbers do not tell the whole story, of course, and Remedy isn't giving up on Firebreak. Far from it.

Speaking to GameSpot, Remedy communications director Thomas Puha responded to the game's launch and outlined some of what's to come as part of the game's ongoing content roadmap. Puha said the team at Remedy is "super motivated" to build upon FBC and make changes based on player feedback. More than 1 million people have played the game so far, and players haven't wasted time submitting feedback.

"One of the great things about an online game like FBC: Firebreak is that we receive a wealth of player data and community feedback to inform our decision-making. We read all of it, and we are there talking with the players online," Puha explained.

Ace Combat 30th Anniversary Movie Highlights Series' Evolution, Teases New Projects

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 02:34

Believe it or not, the Bandai Namco fighter-jet series Ace Combat is now three decades old. To commemorate the anniversary of the first game's release in Japan on June 30, 1995, the company has put out a neat video showing off how the series has evolved over time.

The short movie highlights clips from various Ace Combat games, giving a glimpse of how the colorful PlayStation 1 art of Air Combat (the first entry in the series) transformed into the hyper-realistic near-future science-fiction of the later entries, such as Ace Combat 7.

In addition to the series sizzle reel, the video also teases some projects in the works to further celebrate the anniversary. For instance, Bandai Namco overhauled the Ace Combat website, and it announced a special symphony to be held on January 31, 2026 at Japan's Saitama Kaikan concert hall. Bandai Namco also shared that additional projects will be announced beginning in July.

George Romero's Resident Evil Movie Doc Is Now Free To Watch

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 02:25

Earlier this year, Brandon Salisbury's documentary, George Romero's Resident Evil, debuted on digital outlets. The movie explores Romero's early involvement with the RE franchise and his feature-film adaptation that never went forward. Now, George Romero's Resident Evil is streaming for free on YouTube with an in-depth look back at what could have been.

Romero's Night of the Living Dead and its sequels were very influential on Capcom's Resident Evil. As recounted in the doc, Romero was recruited to direct a live-action commercial for Resident Evil 2 that was only meant to be seen in Japan. Some of the anecdotes about the shoot include Romero directing it in shorts and flip flops during California's cold weather while also marveling that it was the most money on a second-per-second basis he had ever worked with on a project.

The director didn't hide his interest in helming a Resident Evil live-action movie, and he was eventually signed to write and direct it. Romero even recruited horror-comic-book icon Bernie Wrightson to design Tyrant for the film. Although Romero's script took some liberties with the source material--including making the game's lead characters, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, into lovers--it was still closer to the original story than Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil movie that was eventually made without any input from Romero.

The new Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva Blu-ray includes both the original Japanese language track and its English dub. That includes Christopher Robin Miller as Professor Layton--a role that he first took up with the original Nintendo games--and several other familiar voices from the games.

While the film has been available on streaming platforms before, this is the first time that it has received a Blu-ray release in the US. Along with the 100-minute film, you'll get the original trailers as extras.

For those unfamiliar, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva is the first animated feature based on the popular detective series. "Shortly after taking the young Luke under his wing, the world-famous Professor Layton finds himself humming along to the tune of an age-old mystery," the official plot synopsis for the film reads. EA Announces College Basketball Game 16 Years After The Last One

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 01:20

After more than 15 years away, EA Sports has announced it's returning to the world of college basketball games. A new entry in the series is coming, and it'll be the first since 2009's NCAA Basketball 10.

"Bring the Madness. Let's run it back," EA said in its announcement, referring to March Madness. EA did not provide any specifics at all, however, but that's not totally unexpected. After all, when EA announced it was bringing its college football series back, it did so with a basic social media post first to get people excited before the company eventually shared more details.

Extra Points obtained a memo from the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) detailing a request that the CLC put out trying to solicit bids to make a new college basketball game. It appears EA emerged the winner from a bidding process that included three formal bids. The CLC's proposal called for women's basketball teams to be included alongside men's teams.

Sorry, But Sega Isn't Spinning Up Sonic Adventure Series Remasters

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 00:51

Remasters and remakes are arguably more popular than ever--in video games and even movies--but Sega doesn't sound too keen to revisit the Sonic Adventure series. Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka was recently asked about updating Sonic Adventure 2 specifically and stated there are "no plans" for it.

Speaking to Shacknews (via VGC), Iizuka was discussing the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds when the interviewer mentioned their love for Sonic Adventure 2. As such, Iizuka was asked about remaking or revisiting the 2001 game, to which the developer replied: "I am really appreciative of everyone who likes the Sonic Adventure series, but when I think about what it would take to bring that game up to the standards and expectations of what the modern gaming audience would want, I think it would be about as much time and energy as it would to make a new title."

As such, Iizuka noted that "part of me is thinking maybe I should just make a brand new title and that’s why there's currently no plans." What's interesting here is that 2011's Sonic Generations did get a remaster as part of Sonic X Shadows Generations from last year. The game also arrived on Switch 2 earlier this month.

Xbox "Has No Desire" To Make Hardware Anymore, Founding Team Member Says

Game News - Tue, 07/01/2025 - 00:25

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Xbox, but one of the console's original team members, Laura Fryer, is openly questioning one element of Microsoft's gaming division. Fryer--who no longer works for Xbox--recently shared her response to Microsoft's recent handheld and console partnerships and concluded that the company "has no desire" to create hardware anymore.

On her YouTube channel (via IGN), Fryer noted that the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices won't have any exclusive games to drive sales and added that Microsoft's partnerships with Asus on the handheld and AMD on the next generation of Xbox reflects a dim future for its consoles.

"Obviously, as one of the founding members of the Xbox team, I'm not pleased with where things are today," said Fryer. "I don't love watching all of the value that I helped create slowly get eroded away. I'm sad because, from my perspective, it looks like Xbox has no desire--or literally can't--ship hardware anymore. So, this partnership is about a slow exit from the hardware business completely. Personally, I think Xbox hardware is dead."

Tony Hawk Is Auctioning His Gear And Board He Used When He Did An Iconic Trick

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 23:25

The X Games had established itself as the place for more extreme sports competitions by the late 1990s. Tony Hawk became the first skater to successfully execute the 900 flip--a two-and-a-half-revolution aerial spin--after 10 failed attempts, revolutionized the sport, and helped launch his own video game series. Now, some lucky fan can own the gear and board Hawk used to perform the trick at X Games '99.

Dubbed "the 900 collection," the lot is made not only of the Birdhouse Falcon 2 board, but also the shoes, kneepads, and even Hawk's professional credentials for the show.

"Every sport has its defining moments--the plays, the triumphs, the feats that forever change its landscape. For skateboarding, that moment arrived on June 27, 1999, delivered by the undisputed pioneer of modern vertical skateboarding, Tony Hawk," Julien's Auctions said about the lot. "This is more than just a deck; it's the very board, the Birdhouse Falcon 2 outfitted with Fury brand trucks and unmarked wheels, that Tony Hawk rode into legend during his historic performance at the 1999 X Games in San Francisco."

Backyard Baseball '01 Remaster Brings Back 28 MLB Players From The Original Game

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 23:00

Shortly after the release of the Backyard Baseball '97 remaster in October 2024, Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios revealed that Backyard Baseball '01 will be one of the next remastered titles. Now, the game has been set for a release date in early July, and Playground Productions has confirmed that 28 out of 31 MLB players from the original Backyard Baseball '01 will return for the remaster.

The announcement didn't specify which of the three MLB players didn't lend their names and younger likenesses to Backyard Baseball '01's remaster. But some of the confirmed returning players include Cal Ripken, Jr., Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter.

In partnership with Major League Baseball, Backyard Baseball '01 will feature logos from MLB's professional teams in addition to the players representing the league. Like the earlier Backyard sports remasters, Backyard Baseball '01 will recreate the classic gameplay for touch and modern PC controls.

Death Stranding 2 Could Be Causing Some PS5s To Overheat

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 22:31

There are a lot of things for players to find in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but a few fans have already discovered an issue that appears to be overheating some PlayStation 5 consoles.

Players on Reddit (via Push Square) have shared multiple accounts of Death Stranding 2 apparently causing PlayStation 5s to overheat when the map menu is called up on-screen. Fans have reported that the map causes the PS5 fan to loudly go into overdrive before they receive an overheating warning from the console itself.

The working theory among players is that the map menu is running with an unlocked frame rate, which may be causing the PS5's overheating issue. So far, no one has reported the same issue on PS5 Pro, but at least one user shared a video on YouTube that demonstrates the map menu's effect on their PS5 multiple times. Presumably this issue can be addressed in an update from Kojima Productions once it becomes aware of the problem.

Battlefield 6 Leak Shows Off Rush Mode And It Looks Fantastic

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 22:26

Battlefield 6 footage continues to leak out of the game's ongoing alpha tests, with the latest leak showing off the fan-favorite Rush mode. The existence of Rush mode is no surprise, as it's one of the franchise's trademark multiplayer modes, but this is some of the first footage we're seeing of it in action.

This footage stems from a Battlefield Labs alpha test, and it was not meant to be published publicly since the alpha requires players to agree to not share footage online. However, this was hardly the first leak. In any event, players are commenting that the leaked Rush footage looks pretty solid. In the video, we see a player in a tank causing all kinds of chaos. Take a look:

This newest footage was originally published on Reddit before being removed by mods. Many commented that the footage was giving off Modern Warfare 2019 vibes. Specifically, some are saying the footage looks similar to Call of Duty's large-scale, 32 vs. 32 Ground War mode (which itself took cues from the Battlefield series).

Terraria King Slime Boss Guide - How To Summon, Beat, and Drops

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 21:52

King Slime might not rule over much, but they’re royalty nonetheless, as they’re the first boss most players encounter in Terraria and the one most likely to squash you when you least expect it. Big, blue, and bouncy, this gelatinous monarch is the perfect entry point for testing your mettle, dropping some handy loot and setting the tone for boss battles to come.

Unlike the more dramatic foes lurking deeper in Terraria’s layers, King Slime is pretty casual about the way in which it appears, showing up if you poke it the right way or sometimes just crashing the party on its own. Although entirely optional, defeating it is often the first step towards serious progression, unlocking early mobility options and giving newer players a clear combat checkpoint. Here’s how to summon and beat King Slime in Terraria.

How to prepare for King Slime

While King Slime isn’t exactly Moon Lord material, it still pays to come prepared. The first Terraria boss might be a glorified blue blob, but it’s one that teleports, spawns minions, and can flatten you like a professional pancake chef if you’re caught off guard.

New Monster Hunter Wilds Update Finally Addresses Poor PC Performance

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 18:55

Monster Hunter Wilds players on PC have been making their displeasure known on Steam by leaving a string of bad reviews over some performance issues with the game. The number of concurrent players has dropped so rapidly that Wilds' predecessor, Monster Hunter World, has a higher count. Today, Capcom is attempting to address PC players' issues as part of the massive Free Title Update 2. The publisher has also shared a glimpse at the next two free updates beyond this one.

While Free Title Update 2 doesn't make any changes to Wilds' minimum or recommended system requirements, the Steam version has been adjusted to amount of VRAM used in texture streaming to lower the amount of VRAM overall. One of the bug fixes will also make the Estimated VRAM Usage display the correct amount in Display Settings and Graphics Settings.

It's too soon to say whether these changes alone will turn things around for Wilds on Steam, but Capcom notes that further performance and optimization improvements are still in the works. Across all platforms, Free Title Update is adding two new monsters, Lagiacrus and Seregios, as well as underwater combat.

Myst, Riven Developer Cyan, One Of Gaming's Oldest Indies, Lays Off More Staff

Game News - Mon, 06/30/2025 - 18:43

Myst and Riven developer Cyan Worlds laid off an undisclosed number of staffers this week, adding to the list that began in March when it laid off 12 people, or "roughly half" of its team.

Cyan announced the layoffs on Bluesky, where it also shared contact and expertise information about the employees in a running Google document the studio started with its last layoff round, with the intent of helping those staffers find new jobs. That document now includes the names of 14 staffers, suggesting this layoff round included at least two developers. However, inclusion in the doc is voluntary, so it's possible that more people have been affected. GameSpot has reached out to Cyan Worlds for more information.

Cyan's March layoffs also included a statement from the studio detailing the tough financial straits it has faced in 2025, which it also posted on Bluesky.
