How to Train Your Dragon - What to Watch & Read Before the Live-Action Film

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 09:58

The animated adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon was a huge hit when it first hit the big screen in 2010, and now, 15 years later, Dreamworks is bringing that fantasy adventure back to theaters as a live-action adaptation. However, some may not know that both films are based on the 2003 novel series of the same name, written by author Cressida Cowell. The 12-book series offers a much more fleshed-out version of the story, and if you're looking to explore the source material before the new live-action film premieres on June 13, you're in luck, as the How to Train Your Dragon novels are available at Amazon. This includes a big discount on the How to Train Your Dragon: The Complete Book Collection, which is down to just $59.69 (normally $108). You can also grab the animated film and its sequels and spin-off on Blu-ray, and grab a new Toothless Lego set that's available to preorder. Check out all the How to Train Your Dragon deals below.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Complete Book Collection $59.69 (was $108)

All three versions of How to Train Your Dragon follow Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, the son of a Viking chieftain whose clan has been at war with dragons for centuries. However, Hiccup secretly befriends a young dragon, whom he names Toothless, and the two form a bond that challenges the status quo of Viking society.

Since the live-action movie looks like it'll be a faithful remake of the animated film, it might be best to start with the How to Train Your Dragon books. The books are much more detailed and feature entire story arcs that the movies don't include. You can pick up all 12 books with the How To Train Your Dragon: The Complete Collection, which is discounted to just for $59.69 (was $108) at Amazon. The box set includes paperback editions of all 12 books and a slipcase box to store them in.

You can also buy each book on its own, as all 12 are available in standalone hardcover editions at Amazon--although buying all 12 separately will be more expensive than grabbing the discounted box set. That said, if you just want to dip into the literary version of How to Train Your Dragon, you can grab the first novel for just $9.19 (was $16).

Dreamworks also produced an animated series based on "How to Train Your Dragon," called "Dreamworks Dragons," which takes place between the first two movies. The Show ran for 118 episodes across eight seasons, plus a direct-to-DVD movie called Mystery of the Dragon Eye. While each season saw DVD releases, the first two seasons--known as Dragons: Riders of Berk and Dragons: Defenders of Berk--are out of print. Seasons 3-8, which are titled Dragons: Race of the Edge, are available on DVD at Amazon, as is the Mystery of the Dragon's Eye movie. Additionally, all eight seasons are streaming on Peacock.

Dreamworks followed up the Dragons series with two more How to Train Your Dragon animated spin-off shows--Rescue Riders on Netflix and The Nine Realms on Hulu. They haven't received a DVD or Blu-ray release yet, but are worth seeking out on Netflix and Hulu if you're looking to experience the entire How to Train Your Dragon animated universe.

Nintendo Switch 2 Review - It's A Switch, Too

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 06:59

The Nintendo Switch 2 feels like a victim of Nintendo's own history, having set decades-long expectations that new hardware will always be, if not always revolutionary, at least deeply strange. The Wii, DS, 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch each relied on some central gimmick that was new and novel. Nintendo made a name for itself creating not just games but entirely new ways to play. The Switch 2, by comparison, is an iterative step--a more powerful successor to its wildly popular predecessor. While some may lament that this isn't the system to change the game once again, it does feel like Nintendo has found a form factor that fits its design philosophy and development culture like a glove. And so, the Switch is likely the new normal.

It's within that context that I feel the Switch 2 needs to be evaluated: as what it is rather than what it isn't. By that metric, it gets high marks. It's a well-made Switch successor with lots of little thoughtful touches and design improvements to make it feel like a more premium product. That means it's less toy-like than the original Switch, which makes me that much more nervous about handing it off to my kids. But in many ways, it feels like the Switch has grown up.

Now you're playing with power

Of course, the primary upgrade is pure hardware power. The Switch did not launch as a powerhouse system in 2017, and technology has since started to far outpace its capabilities. That made it increasingly unusual to receive third-party games with any kind of parity alongside PlayStation and Xbox, and even Nintendo's own development needs were starting to get more ambitious than the hardware could handle. More on that later.

CoD: Black Ops 6 And Warzone Update Improves Grief Mode And Returns Disabled Skin

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 06:06

A new update has arrived to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone. The June 12 patch notes detail several improvements to Grief mode for Zombies. It also addresses a bug for the recently disabled "Numbers" skin for Woods.

Most of the update focuses on multiplayer and Zombies. However, the patch notes address an issue with Season 4's Essex Model 07 marksman rifle, which previously prevented the rapid fire attachment from working properly in both Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Recently, the Numbers operator skin for Frank Woods was disabled for a visual bug, but this update addresses the issue. This means players who own this skin should be able to use it again in both games.

Dune: Awakening June 12 Patch Notes: More Server Stability Updates, Temporary Contract Change

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 05:42

Dune: Awakening's latest patch is now live, and while it doesn't make any major changes, it does continue to improve server stability for Funcom's newly released MMO.

Patch 1.1.0.13 is only five bullet points long. The first states developer Funcom has made "several backend changes to improve client and server stability." For those keeping track, every Dune: Awakening update has so far included some similar language, including the game's launch-day patch.

As for what else the update includes, it temporarily removes the ability to betray the NPC Jocasta Cleo as part of the "Impact of Ecology" contract, as Funcom states it received reports of being unable to retake the contract after betraying her. Funcom also updated the dialogue options for the Advanced Planetologist quest "The Search for Kynes" to reflect a since-fixed issue where players who defected from House Atreides could no longer progress the quest if they had accepted it prior to defecting.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Dev Reveals Hidden Minigame No One Found

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 04:53

This week marks the fourth anniversary of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, one of the best games from the early days of PlayStation 5. While players may have found most of its secrets years ago, senior designer Grant Parker has revealed he hid a minigame in Rift Apart that no one ever found until he showed them how this week.

During the Insomniac Live show on Twitch (via VGC), Parker explained that he created a mechanical bull ride minigame at Zurkie's space station in Rivet's dimension, but it wasn't fully completed for the game. Rather than cutting out the content, Parker hid it behind an elaborate process that few would have ever guessed to try.

Here's a never-before-discovered easter egg in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart!
For the four-year anniversary, senior designer Grant Parker uncovered how to access a ✨secret✨ prototype mini game during Insomniac Live - our weekly live show on Twitch!#RatchetPS5 pic.twitter.com/9F8sxXhSAJ

— Insomniac Games (@insomniacgames) June 11, 2025

To access the minigame, players need to be at the entrance of Zurkie's where the two signs on the right and the left read "no weapons." By shooting the left sign five times, the right sign four times, and then another 13 times on the left, the minigame will be unlocked. However, the game doesn't provide any audio confirmation when the code is entered correctly.

Mario Kart World Isn't Telling You The Truth About Character And Vehicle Stats

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 04:42

Players have discovered the information Mario Kart World gives about the stats of its character and karts isn't entirely true, as testing certain combinations of characters and vehicles have produced some surprising results.

Just as in Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart World displays basic character and kart information like top speed, acceleration, weight, and handling. These stats are affected by the size of the characters, which are categorized into different unofficial weight classes. Extremely small or light characters, like all of the game's baby characters as well as some others, will have higher acceleration and lower top speeds, while heavy characters like Bowser and Donkey Kong will have higher top speeds but lower acceleration. The game doesn't tell players this outright, but it can be gleaned by selecting the same kart with different characters and seeing how the stat graph changes or stays the same.

However, there are seemingly even more hidden stats that the game doesn't tell players about. As highlighted in a video by svcTyler on YouTube, it appears some character and kart combinations are simply better than others in specific situations, despite the in-game stat graph showing that they should be identical. According to the video, certain characters and karts secretly perform better on certain types of terrain. Wario, for example, goes faster on paved tracks, while characters like Cow go faster on dirt roads. That means even though Wario and Waluigi are in same weight class, and even if they use the same kart, Wario will always be faster when driving on a normal road.

GameStop CEO Says The Company's Future Isn't In Games

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 04:36

GameStop is leaning heavily to trading cards as part of it's future strategy, according to CEO Ryan Cohen. The news comes as a part of larger strategy shift to buy and hold a lot of bitcoin.

Cohen has said that continuing to focus on trading cards, including the incredibly popular recent Pokémon card sets, is a "natural extension" of GameStop's business. He added that the collectibles could have potential for high profit margins.

Pokémon cards have a seen a gigantic resurgence recently. Stores regularly sell of sets, including the Destined Rivals set that launched on May 30. Cards have become increasingly hard to find as scalpers buy up supply and sell Pokémon card products--including cards, special boxes, and accessories--at exorbitant prices.

Dune: Awakening PvP Strat Of Ramming People With Helicopters Will Be Fixed, Dev Says

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 04:27

PvP is a big part of Dune: Awakening, Funcom's newly released survival MMO based on Frank Herbert's legendary sci-fi series, and some players have already found a busted strategy that the developers are looking to fix "ASAP."

Dune: Awakening released on June 5 for those who paid for the game's pricier editions (or June 10 for everyone else), and some players have already reached its PvP-focused endgame--the Deep Desert. It's there where the game's most precious resource, Spice, is found, and where players duke it out in large-scale PvP to come out on top.

Dune developpers, I agree to have a defeat in PVP. But been crushed by orni that do not take any damage. No.
byu/Bombe18 induneawakening

As some players have learned the hard way, however, coming out on top can be quite literal, as a new meta involving the game's flying Ornithopter vehicles is seeing helpless players crushed from above over and over again. One player took to the Dune: Awakening subreddit (via Eurogamer) and posted a video of their plight. The video shows user Bombe18 repeatedly crushed by an Ornithopter crashing into the ground. Every time Bombe18 self-revives, they are crushed again, and soon a second Ornithopter shows up to make Bombe18's life even more miserable.

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut Is a Punchy (But Pricey) Upgrade For Diehard Fans and Newcomers

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 04:02

It's more or less agreed that Yakuza 0 is really good--many will even say the best in the whole series. But with the Switch 2's launch lineup being somewhat sparse, Sega (and Nintendo, which has timed exclusivity on this edition) are likely hoping players want to complement their Mario Karting, Cyberpunk 2077ing, and Street Fighting with a hard-hitting open-world adventure. But is it worth it? It really depends.

At $50, Yakuza 0 Director's Cut is cheaper than many of the other Switch 2 launch games, and there's a lot to do here between the lengthy, dual-protagonist narrative and the surprisingly involving minigames. You can easily get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, and that's not even taking into account the new content.

The first major difference is the addition of new voice and subtitle tracks. Your choice of voice actors is down to personal preference, but for me, the Japanese ones are too iconic to switch away from. Chinese and English voice tracks have been recorded for the entire game. If you're a series veteran, you'll also notice that the demo cinematic features the Japanese rock song "Bubble" by Shounan no Kaze--a song featured in the original Yakuza 0's Japanese release but excised overseas. It's back, it's rockin', and it sets the stage for a grand old time in 1988 Bubble Era Japan.

Hitman Dev Gives Update On Mysterious Fantasy Project

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 03:44

"IO has done--we've really been blessed--five original IPs from the ground up, throughout the years. We're doing our sixth which is a fantasy project."

007: First Light is IO Interactive's first licensed game. Abrak said that the only reason they took the project on is that their partners gave them "freedom" to express themselves within the game.

Xbox Handheld Device "Essentially Canceled" - Report

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 03:24

Though Microsoft never announced an official Xbox handheld device, there were rumors about how such a device might factor into the company's next-gen console plans. Those plans are continuing to evolve, it seems, as a new report said Microsoft's own Xbox handheld is "essentially canceled."

A report from The Verge, citing insiders, said such a device is no longer going forward. This follows on from a report at the end of May that suggested plans for an Xbox handheld were sidelined.

The Verge's report added that Microsoft remains bullish on the idea of making "next-gen Xbox hardware," but perhaps not in the way people think. "We'll see multiple devices from PC makers like Asus that will also be considered next-gen Xbox consoles," the report said.

The Outer Worlds 2 Feels Like More Of The Same, And That's Okay

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 03:15

The Outer Worlds 2 is one of three games coming from Obsidian Entertainment in 2025, two of which are RPGs. Unlike the high fantasy Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2 is a sci-fi adventure, and the way that it leans into the genre by allowing (and encouraging) players to have their characters take on Flaws is an interesting way of differentiating the experience from the troubled chosen one energy often assigned to fantasy heroes, like the protagonist of Avowed.

Unfortunately, exploring these Flaws was not the focus of the 40-minute demo I played at Summer Game Fest. Instead, the demo focused on combat. I don't jump into games like The Outer Worlds 2 for the shooting, so, admittedly, I did not walk away from the preview all that impressed. That's not a knock against the game--the combat is serviceable--but it was disappointing to play a segment of The Outer Worlds 2 that felt like it was just the first game revisited without a chance to experience any of the new stuff.

So far, from what I've played, if you liked The Outer Worlds, then you'll like the sequel. If you weren't a fan, the demo I played did not convince me that The Outer Worlds 2 will be for you. More of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing, though--The Outer Worlds is superb. The gameplay doesn't need to change all that much--The Outer Worlds 2 can just be a Marvel's Spider-Man 2 kind of sequel, where it's just more of the same that came before because what came before was very good.

Lumines Arise Is Shaping Up To Be Another Visually Spectacular Hit From The Tetris Effect Team

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 02:17

After playing 20 minutes of Lumines Arise, the team from Enhance presented me with a difficult decision. "We have another 20 or so minutes left. Do you want to spend the rest of your time asking us some questions, or would you like to play a bit more?" And as much as I wanted to jump straight into interviews and pick the minds of the folks who brought us Humanity, Tetris Effect, and Rez Infinite, I found myself betrayed by my own childlike glee.

"Would you mind if I do just a couple more levels?" I asked.

It was in that moment--when the part of me that simply loves games overtook the part of me that tries her hardest to maintain a writer's sensibilities--that I realized I really enjoyed my time with Lumines Arise. And though of course I took time to chat with game and art director Takashi Ishihara and creative producer Mark MacDonald and enjoyed every minute of it, I left the preview event wishing that somehow the next entry in the Lumines series was back at my hotel, loaded up on my Steam Deck, and waiting for me to get back to playing it.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Took 20 Years To Make Because Capcom Was Too Busy

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 02:10

A new Onimusha game took so long to release because Capcom was busy with other projects, Way of the Sword's producer explained.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to come out in 2026, placing its launch 20 years after the last brand-new console game in the series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. While the series' revival is exciting, we had to ask Capcom why it took so long to make a new Onimusha while the company more actively supported other marquee franchises like Resident Evil. During an interview with GameSpot at Summer Game Fest Play Days, producer Akihito Kadowaki cites how busy Capcom has been with why there has been such a big gap between the release of new Onimusha titles.

"There [were] actually a lot of people within Capcom who wanted to make a new Onimusha title. However, as you probably know, Capcom makes a lot of titles every year and it requires a lot of manpower to do that. So, unfortunately, the timing didn't work out because getting the right people and also the right amount of people to create the game just never worked out because we had other titles we needed to work on as well."

Postal 2 Redux Is Coming To Modern Consoles And PC

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 01:48

It's been almost a decade since the original Postal was given a modern remake in Postal Redux. Now, it's time for 2003's Postal 2 to get the same treatment with Postal 2 Redux, "a ground‐up overhaul" of the original game.

Postal 2 Redux is in development with Flat2VR Studios, Team Beef, and Running With Scissors, with a Kickstarter campaign slated to begin later this summer. According to the announcement, the revitalized game grew out of an initial attempt to bring Postal 2 to VR. Now, the original assets will be recreated in Unity with "enhanced visuals, new weapons, nastier physics, and enough Easter eggs to back‐up the porcelain at Uncle Dave’s Compound."

While the announcement teaser doesn't have much to show off, some of the features planned for Portal 2 Redux include the ability to pet Champ the dog, as well as the addition of dynamic lighting, more refined crowds, fully breakable interiors, and an open world that can be explored without any loading screens.

Way Of The Sword Is Not Connected To Previous Onimusha Games Or The Netflix Series

Fri, 06/13/2025 - 01:27

The narrative of Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not connected to previous Onimusha games or the Onimusha Netflix show, Capcom has confirmed.

"This is a completely different world from the previous games," producer Akihito Kadowaki confirmed to GameSpot during an interview at Summer Game Fest Play Days. "The main reason we wanted to do that is we wanted not only the fans of the series, but also new players, to start at the same place with the story. Everyone can experience the same thing at the same time."

Up until now, all mainline Onimusha games have been connected narratively since Onimusha: Warlords kicked things off in 2001, often having their protagonists fighting demonic Genma and a possessed Oda Nobunaga's forces. Capcom even went through the effort of remastering the first two games in the series in the 2020s, so it could be believable that it was prepping players to understand the series' overarching narrative and lore prior to its continuation. That's not the case, though, as the only real connection is that players are still fighting Genma and Kadowaki admitted that Way of the Sword's development was separate from those remaster efforts.
