Super Mario Odyssey's Awesome Amiibo Figures Return Soon

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 01:46

Nintendo is relaunching its lineup of Super Mario Odyssey Amiibo on November 21, and preorders are live now. These were wildly popular when they first launched, and they’ll likely sell out fast once again. If you want to add these elusive Amiibo to your collection, it’s smart to reserve a unit while they’re still in stock.

The Super Mario Odyssey Amiibo line includes three figures: Mario (Wedding Outfit), Peach (Wedding Outfit), and Bowser (Wedding Outfit). Of these three, Peach and Bowser are the first available to preorder at GameStop. Both are listed for $13, which is a decent discount from their standard $16. Preorders for the Mario figure are not live yet, but it's likely it will be available soon. While Mario is listed as $0.01, the price will likely return to $16 when GameSpot officially opens preorders.

Note that the Bowser and peach figures are already going in and out of stock, so be sure to keep checking back on GameStop's store pages if they're unavailable. We also expect to see all three Super Mario Odyssey Amiibo in stock at Best Buy in the coming days.

Venom 3 Opening Weekend Is Slow, But Beats Joker 2

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 01:12

Sony's Venom movies truly are a box office anomaly. Glancing at the Metacritic scores, the first Venom confused critics and was, at best, tepid among fans but still managed to rake in over $850 million in 2018. The second, Let There Be Carnage, also had mixed reviews and did relatively okay, but still a nosedive from the previous installment with $500 million--though that can be partially attributed to movie-goers being weary about theaters at that time. Venom: The Last Dance is coming in with the weakest opening weekend, but is on track to beating another baddie at the box office: The Joker.

Though The Last Dance took the number one spot in the country, it only opened to $51 million--slightly off from the projections of $65 million and much lower than the prior two installments by $30 and $40 million, respectively. Let There Be Carnage opened with $90 million, beating the first movie, and setting a pandemic record at the time. Despite the low numbers, it might be surprising to see that it beat the Joker sequel, which opened at $39 million.

Looking at the history of the two franchises, even two months ago it seemed like an unlikely scenario. However, with Joker 2 bombing, losing hundreds of millions of dollars for Warner Bros., and receiving a swift home release, the Spider-Man anti-hero could potentially outperform Joker in every way.

Video Game Preservation Efforts Just Got Some Bad News From US Copyright Office

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 01:10

Three years ago, the Software Preservation Network and the Video Game History Foundation put forth a petition to the US Copyright Office to allow libraries to share the out-of-print video games in their possession with researchers remotely. However, that request has now been denied, and it means this battle to keep out-of-print games alive has come to an end.

The copyright office sided with the Entertainment Software Association and other video game lobbyists' argument that letting libraries share digital access to their titles would lead to "a significant risk that preserved video games would be used for recreational purposes." Essentially, the argument is that researchers enjoying the remote games would constitute copyright infringement.

The Video Game History Foundation released a statement decrying this decision while pointing out that it helped prove that "around 87 percent of video games released in the United States before 2010 remain out of print." Video Game History Foundation founder and director Frank Cifaldi also shared his own statement, saying, "I'm proud of the work we and the orgs we partnered with did to try and change copyright law. We really gave it our all, I can't see what else we could have done. This fails the needs of citizens in favor of a weak sauce argument from the industry, and it's really disappointing."

Make Sure To Check In On Your Old Portable Consoles For Swollen Batteries

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 00:45

Older console maintenance is a must-do habit for collectors to keep on playing their favorite games. From more difficult tasks like soddering in circuits to exponentially easier ones like replacing a battery, it's all part of keeping consoles up and running. The latter though, is something becoming more prominent over the last few years, especially with portable consoles using lithium batteries.

Earlier in October, some Twitter users found out that lithium batteries tend to swell up after a few years, potentially causing serious trouble. Now, this is not the first time this sort of incident has come up. The Playstation Vita had a similar situation, and even people reported PSP issues a few years ago.

"If you own any lipo battery I recommend buying yourself a lipo safe bag that is fire and explosion proof. I own a few of these and you never know when your batteries will burst due to swelling," one poster suggested. "You may just save your home from a fire or worse by spending an extra $15-$20."

Borderlands 4: Gearbox Trying To Show Game Early To Terminally Ill Fan

Tue, 10/29/2024 - 00:20

Self-described as a "long shot," a 37-year-old with terminal cancer asked the internet about playing Borderlands 4 early because it's unknown "if I will be around" when the game launches next year. The request did end up making its way to Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford, who's working on turning this long shot into reality.

This all started on Reddit with a post by Caleb McAlpine last week. McAlpine stated that he was "diagnosed with late stage 4 terminal cancer" and has fewer than two years to live--if chemotherapy helps slow down the spread of the illness. On X, Pitchford noted he was aware of McAlpine's status and that the two were emailing one another "to make something happen."

Now there's a chance McAlpine could see Borderlands 4 as early as next month. On Reddit, McAlpine shared an update on the situation: "Thank you everyone for your kind words, I just want to let you all know that Gearbox has something in the works, and I will be going down to Texas to meet with all of them at their HQ as long as I'm able to travel toward the middle of November, end of November."
