Helldivers 2 Super Destroyer Spaceships Get Even More Upgrades

Fri, 04/12/2024 - 00:42

In Helldivers 2, players can now purchase level 4 modules for their Super Destroyers, further upgrading the capabilities of individual Helldivers and making stratagems more deadly.

For the uninitiated, each player in Helldivers 2 is equipped with a spaceship called a Super Destroyer. In between missions, players explore the Destroyer to customize their Helldiver, check out the state of the galactic war, and upgrade their ship to get better weapons and stratagems on the ground. The new level 4 modules further upgrade the Super Destroyer's capabilities.

For example, the XXL Weapons Bay upgrades Eagle stratagems that drop multiple bombs, so that they drop one more bomb. The Enhanced Combustion Bridge increases fire damage in stratagems by 25%. The upgrade Superior Packing Methodology makes it so resupply boxes refill support weapons with the maximum number of carriable magazines. Most modules are of this kind, upgrading certain kinds of stratagems to be more powerful, but not fundamentally changing how they work.

GTA 6 Trailer Recreated In Real Life, And It's Incredible

Fri, 04/12/2024 - 00:15

Grand Theft Auto VI's announcement trailer has been recreated in real life, and the results are pretty impressive. YouTuber Andrew Levitt put together a recreation of the trailer featuring their own footage and video captured by Primecutpro and other video sources.

The video also uses the same song as the real trailer, Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road." Take a look at the trailer below, and a second video here in which Levitt offers a behind-the-scenes look at how he and his team put the video together and the lengths they went to in order to get the shots. It's pretty impressive stuff.

The GTA VI announcement video put up massive viewership numbers, which is no surprise given the game is considered by some to be the most anticipated game release, perhaps ever. One analyst believes it's the most important game release in the history of video games.

Xbox April Update: Here's Everything That's New

Fri, 04/12/2024 - 00:09

Microsoft has unveiled the new features on the way to the Xbox app for PC as well as Xbox consoles this month--with game hubs highlighted as the major addition. First tested in February, game hubs on PC serve as a landing spot for a title where your progress is displayed along with possible add-ons and developer news. They're very similar to a Steam page for a game.

Game hubs on the Xbox app for PC will also show off your game captures as well. Additionally, the profile page will share what friends are playing the game and how many hours they've poured into the experience.

This is the gaming hub for Sea of Thieves on the Xbox app for PC.

The April update also includes a test for a new submenu with the Xbox Game Pass section on PC. Microsoft says these buttons will direct you to games from select publishers, like Riot Games and EA Play titles.

Disney Moves To Dismiss Gina Carano's Mandalorian Lawsuit

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 23:37

After making her Star Wars debut in The Mandalorian in 2019, Gina Carano had an unceremonious exit in 2021 after making a series of offensive posts on social media. Earlier this year, with the financial backing of Twitter/X owner Elon Musk, Carano filed a lawsuit against Disney alleging that her first amendment rights were violated by her dismissal from the Star Wars franchise. Now, Disney has filed its response, and the company wants the entire lawsuit thrown out before it goes to court.

Disney recounted the post that the company felt was the breaking point for its relationship with Carano in its filing (via Deadline).

"Carano's social-media usage sunk to its nadir on February 10, 2021. On that day, she reposted an Instagram post from user warriorpriestgympodcast. The post read: 'Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. 'Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?'"

Bethesda's Todd Howard Responds To Possibility Of Elder Scrolls TV Show Coming Next

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 23:29

Prime Video's Fallout TV series out now, and while it's only just debuted, many are wondering if Bethesda might elect to adapt another one of its franchises for TV. Bethesda boss Todd Howard told IGN that currently there is "nothing in the works" with regards to other Bethesda franchises being adapted for TV. He's taking a never-say-never approach for now, but don't your hold breath for an Elder Scrolls or Starfield TV series.

"Everybody asks, like, about Elder Scrolls, and I keep saying no also. And I would approach those--I'll probably say no. You never know if someone's gonna click," he said.

With the Fallout series, Howard said Bethesda agreed to work with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and their Kilter Films company because they thought they could do a "high-quality job."

Borderlands Director Is Aiming For The Film To Be As Magical As Star Wars And Indiana Jones

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 23:28

Ahead of its release later this year, Borderlands director Eli Roth discussed his inspiration behind the film and how he aimed to create an experience that could deliver some of the same excitement as some of the biggest adventure movies of the '80s.

"I loved the game. I love big popcorn sci-fi movies," Roth said to attendees at Cinemacon (via Variety) while adding that he had wanted to make a movie that "had the fun and magic" of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. "You have a vision in your head, you just hope to God it all works out," Roth said. "Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Thankfully, this one did."

Roth also spoke about one of the stars of the film, Cate Blanchett, and how she had signed up to do the movie because she loved the classic B-movie Escape From New York. Blanchett plays Lilith in Borderlands, a mercenary sent to the dangerous backwater planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the universe's most powerful CEO. Roth has praised Blanchett's performance in the film, as the actress embraced her inner action hero while filming this video game adaptation.

The Dark Knight Rises: Nolan Brothers Initially Disagreed On The Villain Role

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 23:03

It has come to light that brothers and Batman writing and directing veterans Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan disagreed initially on who the main villain should be in The Dark Knight Rises.

Jonathan Nolan appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and discussed how he initially wanted Riddler to be the main villain in The Dark Knight Rises, not Bane. Christopher Nolan and co-writer David S. Goyer wanted the villain to be Bane.

"We had these conversations. Bane came out of a conversation with David [Goyer] and Chris. I was unsure about that at the story stage, but I [didn't want it to be] back seat driving," Nolan said. "Chris understood that what we had done and what Heath [Ledger] had done with [Joker]--you didn't want to go anywhere near it."

The Xbox Dashboard Is Coming To The Web

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 22:34

Xbox Cloud Gaming is getting a UI update for browsers, with the updated interface looking more like what you would see on an Xbox console or the Xbox PC app. The interface includes upgraded social and quality-of-life features, including the ability to start a party chat directly from your browser.

The new interface isn't in general release yet, and is instead being previewed first to Xbox Insiders. A video by The Verge editor Tom Warren shows off some details of the new browser interface, which now navigates similarly to the user interface on an Xbox console.

The new UI is similar to the Xbox console's guide, the quick-start menu that can be accessed by pressing the Xbox button on the controller. The browser-based guide makes it easier to jump back into games you've been playing, with a shortcut to your most recently played game and a recently played list.

Soderbergh's Ocean's Trilogy Is Finally Getting The 4K Blu-ray Treatment

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 09:17

Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy is now a couple decades old, but they've aged spectacularly well--all three of these flicks are a breeze to watch thanks to the likable ensemble cast and Soderbergh's sure hand as a filmmaker. And at the end of April, finally, you'll be able to get Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen on 4K Blu-ray for the first time ever.

The 4K discs for each of these movies hit stores on April 30, and you can preorder them now from Amazon. Each disc is listed at $40 right now, but you can expect that price to come way down before they actually release, and they'll automatically adjust the price of your order downward if and when that happens.

Ocean's Eleven 4K UHD Blu-ray

This first film sees the recently-released-from-prison Danny Ocean and pals rip off a Las Vegas casino owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), who just happens to be dating Danny's ex-wife Tess (Julia Robert). But this isn't personal or anything (yes it is). While all three of these movies are a delight thanks to the immensely entertaining ensemble, that first one is still the most tightly plotted of the trilogy.

Preorder Ocean's Eleven on 4K UHD Blu-ray Ocean's Twelve 4K UHD Blu-ray

Danny and co. are back, and they've gotten themselves into a competition with a famous French master thief called Toulour (Vincent Cassel)--they need to steal a particularly expensive Faberge Egg before LeMarc does. This one is less straightforward than the last one, as it's got twists on top of twists as well as some significant meta humor--like having Tess, played by Julia Roberts, pretend to be Julia Roberts as a distraction. And it's the rare movie in which the climax happens without you even realizing it. Amazing.

Preorder Ocean's Twelve on 4K UHD Blu-ray Ocean's Thirteen 4K UHD Blu-ray

Danny and the gang return to Vegas for a new casino heist, and this time it is personal--one of their own had tried to open a casino only to get pushed out and lose everything to a nefarious fella named Willy Bank (Al Pacino) during construction. So the heist crew wants to ruin this new hotel/casino's opening, and basically everybody who's shown up in this franchise gets involved, including the villains from the first two movies, Terry Benedict and Francois Toulour. As a farewell movie, it doesn't get much better than this.

If you're looking for more of the latest 4K Blu-ray releases, the Spider-Man Spider-Verse Collector's Edition Box Set is over 50% off, and a bunch of Studio Ghibli Blu-rays are buy-two-get-one at Amazon for a limited time.

YouTube Adds, Then Removes, Warning From Joker 2 Trailer

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 06:36

At CinemaCon, Warner Bros. Pictures debuted the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, which arrived online shortly thereafter. Although the video was initially posted without a content warning on YouTube, the platform subsequently added one before deleting the warning a few hours later.

Via Variety, the warning said that the trailer "may contain suicide or self-harm topics." Presumably this was in response to a scene where Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn pantomimes shooting herself. That was an action that Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck performed a few times in the original Joker movie.

In the following statement, a spokesperson for YouTube blamed the warning on an automated system that mistakenly applied it to the video: "We determined that our systems applied the warning interstitial incorrectly. The trailer remains available on YouTube without a warning.”

These Five Christopher Nolan Movies Are Coming Back To Theaters For $5 Each

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 04:54

Regal Cinemas has announced that five of director Christopher Nolan's movies are returning to theaters this year, and as a nice treat, tickets are only $5.

The five movies coming back to cinemas are some of Nolan's best and most beloved from his filmmaking career. As reported by Collider, the first is Nolan's second Batman movie, The Dark Knight, which features Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as Joker.

Ledger earned a posthumous Academy Award for the film, which is regarded by many to be the best of the three Batman films that Nolan made. It recently came to light that Nolan wasn't initially excited about making a follow-up to Batman Begins until his brother Jonathan--who wrote one of the movie's most famous lines--convinced him to do it.

Margot Robbie Is Producing a Monopoly Movie

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 04:33

Margot Robbie's Barbie movie may have only won a single Oscar for Best Original Song, but it was the biggest box office hit of 2023. Now, Robbie is looking ahead at an even more challenging property to adapt for the big screen: Hasbro's Monopoly board game.

Via Variety, Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon that Robbie will produce a Monopoly live-action film through her production company, LuckyChap, alongside her partners, Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara. Monopoly was originally conceived as The Landlord's Game by Lizzie Magie in 1903 before it evolved into its current form as one of the most popular board games in the world.

Lionsgate has been attached to produce the Monopoly movie since 2015, and at one point, Kevin Hart was going to have a leading role in the film. That incarnation of the movie stalled out, but Hasbro assured fans in 2023 that the project was still alive. Although Monopoly has a signature character in the form of Uncle Moneybags, the real estate game has even less of a narrative than the Barbie doll line did before the film. Regardless, Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson assured attendees at CinemaCon that LuckyChap has already developed a take on the film.

Vampire Survivors Is Coming To PlayStation And Getting Contra Crossover DLC

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 04:33

Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are dropping into Vampire Survivors next month as part of a Contra-based DLC called Operation Guns. Then, later this summer in the northern hemisphere, PlayStation owners can play as the muscle-bound Konami characters too, because Vampire Survivors is finally headed to PS4 and PS5.

Developer Poncle revealed the PlayStation releases and Contra DLC at the Triple-I Initiative, a showcase that included the studios behind Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, and more. Operation Guns is planned to launch May 9 for Vampire Survivors for $2.49. Along with Bill and Lance, the add-on will feature a new stage called Neo Galuga, nine other characters including Probotector, and 22 weapons from the run-and-gun series. Obviously, the most famous is the Spread Shot, which will come to the roguelike game so players can blast away skeletons and werewolves.

This won't be the first crossover event for Vampire Survivors. In December, the roguelike game got Among Us DLC named Emergency Meeting. That add-on introduced nine new characters along with 15 weapons. Vampire Survivors has also paid homage to other gaming classics in the past, such as recreating a Final Fantasy 7 trailer earlier this year.

The Rogue Prince Of Persia Builds On Dead Cell's Formula, Puts A Heavier Emphasis On Wall Running

Thu, 04/11/2024 - 03:45

The wait for the next Prince of Persia game is going to be a lot shorter than the last one. After waiting almost 14 years between the releases of The Forgotten Sands and The Lost Crown, we only have to keep patient for a few months to play the next Prince of Persia. Titled The Rogue Prince of Persia, the upcoming roguelike is coming from Dead Cells studio Evil Empire and is scheduled to launch in Steam Early Access later this year. During a preview event for the game, I played about 30 minutes of it--it feels like getting another taste of Dead Cells (which is great!) but flavoring it with Prince of Persia's lore and emphasis on wall-running. I like a lot of what it's doing, but there are aspects that give me pause.

In The Rogue Prince of Persia, you play as the titular prince whose rash decisions have led to a Hun invasion of Persia and the near annihilation of his home city. Possessing the power to rewind time upon his death, the prince returns to an oasis just outside of his city amid the attack and vows to work his way into the city's heart to save his people and family and stop the invasion before it becomes too late. With each death, he returns to the oasis but with the knowledge of what's to come and who he has to kill to make it to the center of the city.

As part of the preview, I spoke with Evil Empire game director Lucie Dewagnier about the game and, of course, I had to ask about how it felt making a Prince of Persia game knowing that another one was being worked on at the exact same time. "It was not a surprise because we worked with [Ubisoft Montpellier], we communicated with The Lost Crown team since the alpha stage," Dewagnier told me. "From the beginning of our development, they took our game, we played their [game]. So we managed to not do the same thing. Sometimes [however], because we're working on the same thing globally, we have the same idea--the same solution to an issue. But we communicated to make sure we were different and we are both making something new about the Prince of Persia."
