How video games give players the opportunity to explore gender

Overview:

This paper aims to explore how video games give players the opportunity to explore gender, focusing on transgender and non-binary people’s experiences. Interviews were conducted on three transgender people, while a survey was sent out to both cisgender and transgender people. This study gathered many people’s experiences with video games and gender, analysing their themes to come to conclusions. Based on the results, it was found that transgender people use video games to cope with gender dysphoria and escape reality. Furthermore, they use it as a medium to figure out their identity and come out to their online friends as preparation for coming out outside of video games.
