Stephen King's The Stand Hardcover Edition Drops To Lowest Price In Years

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 03:54
See at Amazon Preorder at Amazon

Stephen King fans can grab the stunning hardcover edition of The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition for nearly 50% at Amazon. As King's longest novel, the hardcover carries the highest list price of any of his 65-plus novels at $55. Right now, however, it's available for only $29.68, which is the best price in over two years. Unlike many King novels, including other hardcover editions, The Stand often sells for $40 or more, so if you're in the camp who believes The Stand is the best King novel (indeed, it is), scoop up this deal while you can.

The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition (Hardcover) $29.68 (was $55)

The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition restores the 400-plus pages King had to remove before the novel's original publication in 1978. The text wasn't removed because it was superfluous; it was all related to cost. A 1,100-plus page hardcover book costs a lot to manufacture, and King was still early in his career back then. His first novel, Carrie, was published just four years prior in 1974. The Stand was King's fifth book.

By the time 1990 rolled around, King was a household name, which allowed Doubleday to publish the post-apocalyptic masterpiece in its intended form.

At 1,152 pages, The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition claimed the distinction as King's longest novel--it just barely eclipsed the page count of 1986's It starring Pennywise the Clown (1,138 pages). Note: the current hardcover edition of It is actually 1,168 pages, but The Stand has a higher word count.

One of the coolest aspects of the hardcover edition of The Stand is that Doubleday uses the original 1990 dust jacket for current printings. It's one of several King hardcovers currently utilizing the jagged, swooping title font and ominous collage backdrops. If you're a King collector, you should also check out the hardcover editions of The Shining, 'Salem's Lot, and Night Shift. These four books. look great. together on a bookshelf. It also doesn't hurt that The Shining and 'Salem's Lot are also among King's best novels, while Night Shift is notable as the author's first short story collection.

Stephen King Classics with Nostalgic Cover Designs:

All four hardcovers are on sale for nearly 50% off at Amazon. Each well-designed book includes a haunting dust jacket matching the one shown above.

It's worth noting that the trade paperback edition of The Stand (1,200 pages) is available for $14.40 (was $22).

See at Amazon The End of the World As We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King's The Stand (Hardcover) $31.49 (was $35) | Releases August 19

The Stand is a timeless classic in the post-apocalyptic fantasy genre. The sprawling tale about a weaponized pandemic is told from many different perspectives and features a staggering number of subplots and secondary stories within the wider narrative.

King has alluded to The Stand and included characters from its world in his other works--he often does this in general--but there are certainly many more stories that could be told in the author's vividly realized apocalypse.

King apparently agrees, as he authorized the creation of the upcoming anthology The End of the World As We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King's The Stand. The 800-page short story collection features stories by dozens of contemporary horror and thriller authors, including S.A. Cosby, Richard Chizmar, Meg Gardiner, Josh Malerman, Catriona Ward, and Paul Tremblay. King wrote the introduction, and the anthology was edited by Christopher Golden and Brian Keene.

The End of the World As We Know It is scheduled for publication on August 19, so you have a few months to prepare by reading or re-reading King's original doorstopper.

Fields Of Mistria 0.13.2 Patch Notes: New Furniture, Bug Fixes

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 03:26

Cozy farming sim Fields of Mistria received its v0.13.2 update today, March 13, and it delivers some small but significant changes to the game.

This patch's biggest addition comes in the form of new items in the Lava Caves furniture set, which can be found in the Lava Caves biome, which was first introduced in the game's recent major update. The patch also increases the pickup range of essence particles, adjusts Louis' portrait positioning in the Relationship UI photo, and clarifies a detail of the Procuring the Sealing Scroll questline progression.

In terms of bug fixes, this new patch makes Animal Sprite Statues lose Essence charge even when the player does not enter the Large Barn or Coop, squashes an issue that caused players to get stuck in a dive spot in the Deep Woods pond, and deals with two niche issues where certain interactions would cause rain to replace blizzard conditions in winter outside the Mines. There are a number of other additions as well, so check out the full patch notes below for yourself.

There Are Now Over 1,000 Xbox Play Anywhere Games

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 03:00

After almost nine years, Microsoft has announced a major milestone for the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative. There are now more than 1,000 games that support the feature, which lets people buy the title once and play it across Xbox platforms, Windows 10/11 PCs, and some PC gaming handhelds.

Xbox Play Anywhere went live in September 2016, originally working between Xbox One and PCs. The feature also includes cross-save functionality and only works with digital copies of games. As a fun bit of trivia, the first Xbox Play Anywhere-supported game was ReCore, with Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, and Halo Wars 2 following behind it. While sounding similar, it's important to note that cloud gaming with Xbox Game Pass is different from Xbox Play Anywhere.

Microsoft has unveiled that there are more than 1,000 Xbox Play Anywhere-supported games. That means you can buy them on Xbox and then play them on PC or a PC gaming handheld for no extra cost.

"When we look at data for titles that are Xbox Play Anywhere enabled, these titles get 20% more gameplay because it's more flexible, because I can play on the go," said Xbox vice president of next generation Jason Ronald. Mentioning "on the go" is eyebrow-raising, especially after a report earlier this week pointing to a possible Xbox-branded handheld launching later this year.

Since the wireless model connects via Bluetooth, it's very likely to work with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, which supports Switch accessories.

PowerWash Simulator 2 Is Gonna Clean Up Later This Year

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 02:00

When PowerWash Simulator debuted in 2022, it could have easily been just another chore game. Instead, the game's developer, FuturLab, infused PowerWash Simulator with its own mythology and a story with sci-fi elements that slowly plays out over the course of the game. Later this year, FuturLab is sending players back to Muckingham in PowerWash Simulator 2. And in the first teaser below, players will get a glimpse of some "soap-erior equipment" they'll be able to use to finally clean up this incredibly dirty town.

The gnomes from the first game are briefly seen in the teaser as they unveil the sequel. While FuturLab didn't actually confirm another wild underlying story, it did mention that there will be a new campaign that allows players to uncover "more of Muckingham’s mysteries." PowerWash Simulator 2 will also introduce new locations, including Sponge Valley, Power Falls, and Lubri City.

Players will get access to more-powerful cleaning tools, but the addition of a shared co-op campaign may allow the game's cleaning jobs to go even faster. Online play is supported, and there's even the option for split-screen cleaning action. Surprisingly, one of the other new features allows players to modify and customize their own homes with furniture and objects. According to FuturLab, players can even "invite your power wash pals over to check out your pad." However, that feature isn't glimpsed in the teaser.

The Upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Daima Edition Is Getting Physical PS5 And Switch Versions

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 01:30

The Dragon Ball action RPG Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is getting a new expansion later this year that celebrates the most recent anime series in the franchise, Dragon Ball: Daima. The expansion will roll out in two parts, with Part 1 launching September 2025 and Part 2 planned for March 2026. While fans who already own the game on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or PC can purchase the expansion as digital DLC, a new physical Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Daima Edition is also launching later this year that includes the base game and the two-part Daima expansion in one package. No specific release date is confirmed for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Daima Edition's physical release, but preorders for the PS5 and Switch versions are already available for $50 at Amazon.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Daima Edition $50 | Releases TBA 2025

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Daima Edition will include the full base game on disc and a download voucher for the Daima: Adventure Through the Demon Realm expansion. No preorder bonuses have been confirmed for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Daima Edition, but we'll update if anything is announced. While Amazon lists the game's release date as December 31, 2025, that is likely a placeholder, and we'll update once the actual launch date is confirmed.

It's also worth noting that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Daima Edition will not include the five other Season Pass DLC expansions previously released for the game, meaning you'll have to pick those up separately if you want to experience those additional storylines. So far, only PS5 and Nintendo Switch are getting physical releases, though the digital version of the Daima expansion will be available for all other platforms, including PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.

Preorder at Amazon

For the two-part Daima expansion, players explore the Demon Realm as Goku after he's shrunk down to his younger self. Goku's new companions from the Daima anime, Glorio, Shin, and Panzy, join the little Saiyan on his adventure to master new techniques and track down the Dragon Balls of the Demon Realm so he can restore himself to his normal size and full power.

In case you missed it when launched in 2020, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot retells several storylines from the manga and anime source material, starting with the Saiyan Saga and ending with the Majin Buu Saga, while expanding the universe with new content. Several DLC expansions followed the base game that add five additional chapters to play through based on the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection 'F' arcs from Dragon Ball Super, and an all-new campaign starring Trunks. The game combines the action-packed brawling of the franchise with light RPG mechanics like leveling up Goku, taking on side quests, and exploring the game's large zones. "Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's modern, semi-open approach to telling the saga of DBZ--despite some minor issues--is a good one," Heidi Kemps wrote in GameSpot's review. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot launched on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, followed by PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports with enhanced visuals.

PlayStation Portal Reportedly Adds PlayStation Classics For Cloud-Streaming Beta

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 01:17

There are apparently over 30 new games available to stream via the cloud on PlayStation Portal without using a PS5--and they're all part of the Classics catalog. A new report states that almost every original PlayStation and PSP title that's included with the PlayStation Plus Premium membership now works on the handheld device.

According to TrueTrophies, Sony has silently added the PlayStation Classics for the PlayStation Portal cloud-streaming beta. The highly requested feature--which removes the requirement of utilizing a PS5--arrived in November and remains in beta. PlayStation Portal owners must opt in, and originally, only PS5 games part of the PS Plus catalog could be played. Now the library reportedly includes titles like Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, Twisted Metal 2, and MediEvil: Resurrection.

Last summer, a PlayStation Portal update offered up the ability to play in more places with better public Wi-Fi access. The device basically pops up a QR code when trying to connect at airports and hotels, so a smartphone is needed to complete the process.

See Half-Life 2 In A Whole New Light By Playing An RTX Demo On March 18

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 00:45

Nvidia has confirmed that Half-Life 2 RTX will get a demo on March 18, giving us a glimpse of what this Valve classic would look like if it were made in 2025, not 2004.

This demo is meant to be a showpiece for Nvidia RTX Remix, which exited beta today, March 13. As the video below shows, this gives Half-Life 2 features it didn't have before, like full ray tracing and multi-frame generation. While the final version of Half-Life 2 RTX will contain the full game, this demo will only feature the Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt levels.

First teased in 2023, Half-Life 2 RTX is not made by Valve but by the fans-turned-developers at Orbifold Studios. Positioned as a DLC mod for the official version of the game, Half-Life 2 RTX overhauls the shooter's visuals utilizing Nvidia RTX Remix, an open-source platform that can be used to enhance preexisting games with Nvidia technologies like DLSS 4, RTX Neural Rendering, and Reflex. Nvidia wants modders to use RTX Remix for fan-made remasters, and is backing Half-Life 2 RTX to show what RTX Remix can do.

Here's How Much Remedy Is Spending On Its Upcoming Games

Game News - Fri, 03/14/2025 - 00:08

Finnish game developer Remedy has published its annual report for 2024, and included in the document is the disclosure of how much money the company is spending on its upcoming games. This is something of a rarity in the video game business, as many other publishers and developers hide development budgets.

Remedy said the "initial" development budget for Control 2 is €50 million ($54 million USD). As announced previously, Annapurna Pictures is funding 50% of the game's development budget, and both Remedy and Annapurna plan to create "original stories" spanning film and TV based on Remedy's game franchises.

FBC: Firebreak, meanwhile, carries a development budget of €30 million. FBC is a session-based, multiplayer PvE game that will be "mid-priced." It'll also be available at launch via PC Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass, and PlayStation Plus. Remedy owns the Control IP, of which FBC is a spin-off.

The Rumored Oblivion Remake Could Launch Sooner Than Expected

Game News - Thu, 03/13/2025 - 23:51

The long-rumored remake of Bethesda's 2006 RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could be announced soon and potentially release before June. That's according to NateTheHate, who has a solid track record of reporting on unannounced games and platforms.

As for when the game could be released, NateTheHate said it could be "likely sooner than the original June target." However, NateTheHate said the situation is fluid and there is no concrete information to go on at this stage.

Separately, VGC's own sources corroborated NateTheHate's report and added that the game could launch as soon as April 2025. It's reported that Virtuous developed the apparent Oblivion remake, and that it was "fully remade" with Unreal Engine 5 and featuring a variety of re-worked gameplay systems.

Spectre Divide Is The Latest Live-Service Casualty, Game And Dev Shutting Down

Game News - Thu, 03/13/2025 - 23:47

Spectre Divide developer Mountaintop Studios has announced that the free-to-play game will be shutting down just six months after it first launched. While the 3v3 first-person shooter received fairly positive feedback after its initial release, Mountaintop Studios says that a steady decline in players and a lack of funds contributed to its demise.

Studio CEO Nate Mitchell explained that the studio explored every possible avenue it could to keep the developer and the game afloat, but after exhausting all of its options, the writing was sadly on the wall for Spectre Divide and its team. "The industry is in a tough spot right now," Mitchell said.

"We were optimistic about the first week. We've had 400,000 players play, with a peak concurrent player count of 10,000 across all platforms," Mitchell explained in a Steam Blog post. "But as time has gone on, we haven't seen enough active players and incoming revenue to cover the day-to-day costs of Spectre and the studio. Since the PC launch, we stretched our remaining capital as far as we could, but at this point, we're out of funding to support the game. This means Mountaintop will be closing its doors at the end of this week."

ESPN Launches A New Basketball Island On Fortnite

Game News - Thu, 03/13/2025 - 23:27

Late last year, ESPN carved out a place for itself in Fortnite with the debut of ESPN Football Island. Now, the network is adding a second island in Fornite Creative, which will be called ESPN Basketball Island. The two ESPN islands will be connected through in-game portals, and the latest attraction is adding a few new basketball-inspired minigames.

The first new minigame, Dunk to Win, can be seen in the Basketball Island launch trailer below. It's essentially another riff on Capture the Flag, except the flag is now a basketball. Once players have the ball, they have to avoid the other team's defenders and make their way to the net to score a slam dunk.

The other basketball-themed minigame is Swing Shot, which puts players in Fortnite Baller vehicles as they attempt to land inside of a moving basketball hoop located on the opposite side of the court. There's even a new minigame called The Ocho Obstacle Sprint--which is a more challenging obstacle course than the one on Football Island. The Boxtagon is also making its return for 1v1 battles inside of a UFC-style cage. This minigame can still be found on Football Island as well.
