EA Will Pay Student-Athletes $1500 To Appear In CFB 26, More That Double Last Year's Rate

Game News - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 06:17

After paying college athletes $600 to appear in College Football 25, EA will pay players more than double that for this year's CFB 26. EA Sports confirmed to FBS players in an email today, obtained by The Athletic, stating that players will get $1,500 if they opt in to appear in this year's game. This is no surprise, as this information leaked earlier this year.

Additionally, players will receive a Deluxe Edition copy of the game--this was also offered in 2025. EA will pay some athletes more for appearing as brand ambassadors, just like last year.

A spokesperson for EA said, "College sports are growing and changing, and our focus at EA Sports is on continuing to put athletes first as we bring them in the game in College Football 26 and beyond."

Assassin's Creed Shadows Review - Shinobi Simulator

Games Reviews - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 04:00

It felt good to see Assassin's Creed Shadows protagonist Naoe's face nearly healed after the 50-hour journey through 16th-century Japan. The wound that had once marred her face was mostly gone, with only a thin, barely discernible scar left behind. Naoe's face slowly heals over the course of Shadows' story and the changing of the in-game seasons, providing a visual metaphor for the game's thematic journey through the ugliness of revenge, the healing process of forgiveness and moving beyond tragedy with enough time and support. It's a story that has incredible moments between Naoe and fellow protagonist Yasuke but largely feels listless during its muddled second act. And although Naoe's shinobi fantasy is the best Assassin's Creed has been in ages and remains fun to play for the entire game, it makes Yasuke's samurai gameplay feel subpar in comparison.

Naoe feels like the intended protagonist of Shadows. Save for a brief hour as Yasuke, the first 12 or so hours are spent solely playing as the shinobi. Even once Yasuke returns to the story, it's in service to Naoe's goal to kill a dozen masked individuals and steal back a mysterious box that she has to recover.

Shadows is Naoe's story. Yasuke is just here for the ride.

But even ignoring his narrative shortcomings as a secondary protagonist, Yasuke is not fun to play. Assassin's Creed has never been a series where its individual gameplay components have surpassed those in other games. Its combat has never been as good as what's available in other action games, other titles have stronger parkour mechanics, and the series always feels a step behind when it comes to stealth. The best part about Assassin's Creed has always been that it brings those three styles of gameplay together in one cohesive package--a combination you don't often see at the level of quality Ubisoft has managed to achieve with Assassin's Creed. Naoe perfectly embodies that trifecta, even possessing new mechanics that make the stealth part of Assassin's Creed a lot better than recent entries. Yasuke, on the other hand, doesn't. Though he's able to fight, Yasuke cannot use parkour, nor can he really rely on stealth. He's only one-third of Assassin's Creed. Although the idea of making an Assassin's Creed protagonist who solely specializes in open warfare sounds cool, in practice it feels awful because that aspect of the franchise is still not up to snuff with dedicated action games.

Game News - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 03:23

Retro hardware manufacturer Analogue has delayed its modernized Nintendo 64 to July 2025. Originally planned for a Q1 2025 release, the highly anticipated $250 console has been sold out since October when preorders opened. The Analogue 3D is an FPGA device designed to provide an authentic N64 gameplay experience in 4K resolution on modern displays.

It even supports all of the original accessories. It doesn't come with a controller, but if you want to ditch your old three-prong N64 controllers, Analogue collaborated with 8BitDo on a new-style controller that looks quite lovely. Unlike the console, the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is still available to preorder at Amazon. Amazon currently lists the release date as June 30, though it's possible this is a placeholder and the controller will launch alongside the console in July.

Palworld Dev Says It Was "A Depressing Day" When Nintendo Sued

Game News - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 02:35

In 2024, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair on patent infringement claims, and now Palworld's community manager has revealed more details on how it all went down.

Appearing at GDC 2025 this week, community manager John Buckley said Pocketpair did "legal checks" prior to Palworld's release to try to mitigate a lawsuit risk in Japan, PC Gamer reported. Given that, Buckley said the team was confused when Nintendo and The Pokemon Company sued Pocketpair in Japan.

"When the lawsuit was announced we were like, 'What?' And we went back to the lawyers, and the lawyers contacted the courts and asked, 'What's going on?' and that's when we realized it was patents they were going for,'" Buckley said.

Lego has produced multiple sets based on famous video game franchises over the years, and in 2025, it's tackling one of the biggest IP of all time in the form of Pokemon. For now, Lego is only teasing a single kit to kick off its new Pokemon line, but it looks like it'll be focusing on the Pokemon franchise's mascot Pikachu with this kit. Here's a look at the teaser image for it:

Lego Pokemon

There's not much to go on here, but the image does show off a collection of Lego blocks assembled to form Pikachu's tail. More pricing details, a release date, and a closer look at what Lego is working on will be revealed at a later date. Beyond that, Lego also recently revealed two new sets inspired by Nintendo. First up, there's the 1,972-piece replica of Mario and his kart, making this one of the largest Super Mario Lego sets out there. Priced at $170, this will be exclusive to the Lego Store when it launches on May 15 and it'll be available through other shops later in the year.

The other set Lego has teased is a Nintendo Game Boy, but for now, there's not much to go on regarding price or an official release date. One reliable leaker has claimed that the Lego Game Boy will go on sale starting October 1, will be priced at $60, and contains 421 pieces.

Baldur's Gate 3 CEO Weighs In On The "Single-Player Games Are Dead" Argument

Game News - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 00:50

The death of single-player video games has been a hot topic for several years now--one that Larian Studios founder and Baldur's Gate 3 director Swen Vincke weighed in on recently. Posting on his X account, Vincke explained how he doesn't believe that traditional single-player experiences aren't dead yet.

"That time of the year again when big single-player games are declared dead," Vincke posted. "Use your imagination. They're not. They just have to be good."

This lines up with previous comments made by Vincke, as in an interview with GameSpot, he revealed his thoughts on how other studios could replicate the success of Baldur's Gate 3. At The Game Awards last year, Vincke also gave a speech on how the winning formula for a game was "stupidly simple" but somehow kept getting lost.

Modders Announce CS Legacy, A Standalone Counter-Strike 1.6 Remake

Game News - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 00:43

If you fondly remember the old days of Counter-Strike before newfangled inventions like the Source engine, we've got good news for you. The mod team behind CSPromod has announced CS: Legacy, a standalone remake of Counter-Strike 1.6 built entirely in Valve's Source SDK.

As you can see from the above announcement trailer, the project features classic maps like de_nuke, all gussied up with 4K textures. It even has the static falling-over death animation that Counter-Strike 1.6 players remember well. According to the trailer, the project is coming to Steam Early Access in 2025.

Posts on the project's Discord suggest that the initial release will include the classic maps Dust2, Nuke, Train, Poolday, and Aim_map. The small team behind CS: Legacy previously worked together on CSPromod back in the 2000s, which was an attempt to bring CS 1.6-style gameplay to the Source engine. The original Counter-Strike released in 2000, and was replaced with Counter-Strike: Source in 2004, a change that was considered controversial in the community at the time.

Yasuke Commits "Hate Crime To Parkour" In Assassin's Creed Shadows, Say Experts

Game News - Wed, 03/19/2025 - 00:42

Apparently it's possible to be guilty of a "hate crime to parkour." Unfortunately for Assassin's Creed Shadows protagonist Yasuke, he is culpable in this department, according to a couple of experts in navigating urban obstacles.

PC Gamer rounded up two parkour athletes, Benj and Toby from Storror Parkour Pro, to discuss what is actually realistic in Assassin's Creed Shadows and what's nigh impossible. The pair took issue with Yasuke using his knee to ascend a ledge, laughing while addressing the problem. "You'll be canceled out of any parkour community around the world," said Benj. Toby added salt to the wound by saying, "That's a hate crime to parkour that climb up there. Yeah, that's brutal." Yasuke is one of two playable characters in the game, with Naoe serving as the more agile option.

Basically, the duo explained that parkour should never include utilizing your knees to climb up somewhere. The same is true for your elbows, since those actions are terrible for your joints. Intriguingly, the franchise's iconic leap of faith is actually realistic--from certain distances. They argue jumping off from shorter distances, say no more than seven stories, could be possible with a good amount of hay. But when Assassin's Creed heroes dive off from 30-plus stories, that's a no-go.
