The Last Of Us Season 2 Release Date Possibly Worked Out By Fans

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 06:40

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 is coming this April, but when exactly might the sophomore season debut? HBO hasn't revealed the exact date yet, but fans believe they've worked it out (via GamesRadar).

New episodes in The Last of Us Season 1 debuted on Sunday nights, which, if that formula holds for Season 2, would mean it could premiere on April 6, April 13, April 20, or April 27. Another popular HBO show, The White Lotus, debuts its third season on February 16 and wraps up on April 6.

It stands to reason that HBO wouldn't air the first episode of The Last of Us Season 2 and the finale of The White Lotus Season 3 on the same day. If that's the case, then that leaves April 13, April 20, or April 27 for The Last of Us Season 2 to debut. Fans believe The Last of Us Season 2 could debut on April 13, giving HBO an opportunity to end one highly anticipated show and begin another one without any weeks off.

WoW's Plunderstorm Battle Royale Mode Returns Today, Now With Less Grinding

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 06:33

World of Warcraft's pirate-themed battle royale Plunderstorm is back for a limited time, this time with a revamped progression system and new rewards to fight over. The mode, which does require a WoW subscription but not the game's latest expansion, will be playable January 14 through February 18.

Blizzard first introduced the experimental PvP mode last spring. It stood out thanks to how it played nothing like the genre-defining MMORPG players have come to know. Players create a class-less character, drop into the game's Arathi Highlands map, and then scrounge for new abilities and gear upgrades while battling both NPCs and players alike to level up and become more powerful.

Combat is all skill-based, requiring proper position and timing rather than simply right-clicking on enemies and having attacks automatically hit. According to a datamine by Wowhead, it seems there will be some new abilities for players to experiment with this time around, with two new offensive and utility abilities. On the offensive side, there is Aura of Zealotry, which looks to mimic the iconic Paladin ability Consecration, while another, Celestial Barrage, calls down beams of moonlight to damage and reveal enemies. The new utility spells include Call Galefeather, which pushes enemies back, and the G.R.A.V. Glove: a spell that allows players to place a mark and then instantly teleport back to it.

Geralt Faces A War Between The Land And The Sea In The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 05:53

Netflix's Witcher universe is continuing to expand. Next month, Geralt of Rivia will be back in action for a new animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. And while Liam Hemsworth is taking over the role of Geralt from Henry Cavill in live-action, Geralt's original video game voice actor Doug Cockle will reprise his role for Sirens of the Deep, as heard and seen in the new trailer below.

Sirens of the Deep is set during the first season of the live-action show, shortly after Geralt met Yennefer of Vengerberg--as voiced by Anya Chalotra, who reprises her role from the show. In this story--which is based upon Andrzej Sapkowski's short, "A Little Sacrifice"--Geralt is trying to forget Yennefer while traveling with Jaskier (Joey Batey). But it won't be long before Geralt and Yennefer are reunited when they get drawn into a war between humans and a kingdom of merpeople.

Despite Geralt's attempts to defuse the situation with his new ally, Essi Daven (Christina Wren), both sides seem set on ending their long-standing feud with blood in the water. And there are some monsters that emerge which even Geralt may not be able to kill.

New Sony Patent Applications Include AI-Based, Anti-Lag Tech

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 05:27

Newly revealed Sony patent applications show AI tech that would predict player inputs to reduce online lag and an accessory that would allow players to aim the PS5's DualSense controller like a gun.

The AI patent application (spotted by tech4gamers) would use "a machine learning-based model or other system" to predict and execute player inputs before they are actually completed, thereby offsetting some online lag. The system would use a camera and interpret player movements to make predictions. Another similar system could use incomplete inputs to predict what a player's next move would be.

Image from the Sony patent which shows a player playing a football-themed game in front of a TV with an attached camera.

The DualSense patent was filed in June, but made public in earlier in January (as spotted by GameRant). Players would hold the right "arm" of the DualSense, aiming it like a gun and using the space between the right bummer and trigger as a sight. The patent suggests that this accessory could be paired with others, like the PSVR2 headset.

Walmart Canada Is Hyped For The Switch 2 Reveal, Apparently

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 05:22

Nintendo is reportedly set to announce the Switch 2 on January 16, and Walmart Canada--known for upsetting video game developers by leaking announcements early--has chimed in with a meme of its own.

Today, January 14, the Walmart Canada Gaming account posted the popular image of Mario peeking from behind a curtain. "Hey, Mario," the post said, with the waving-hand emoji. Walmart Canada is no doubt referencing the rumors of a forthcoming Switch 2 reveal.

What's noteworthy here is that Walmart Canada has a semi-lengthy history of spoiling major announcements by posting product pages ahead of official announcements. As of yet, however, Walmart Canada hasn't spoiled anything about the Switch 2.

Diablo 4 Season Of Witchcraft Will Give Players Diablo 3-Inspired Powers

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 05:00

Diablo 4's seventh seasonal update, Season of Witchcraft, arrives on January 21 and will give players a whole new set of fan-favorite powers from an old Diablo class to experiment with.

Many of the new 25 Witchcraft Powers are taken almost directly from abilities used by Diablo 3's Witch Doctor. The class hasn't made its way to Diablo 4 officially just yet, but Blizzard isn't being shy about paying homage to the frog-slinging mystic. Powers like Firebat Servants, various Hexes, Poison Frog Servants, Soul Harvest, and Piranhado are all taken from the Witch Doctor's Diablo 3 playbook and will be usable by any class.

Everything new that's coming as part of Diablo 4 Season 7.

To earn those Witchcraft Powers and others, players will need to aid a coven underneath the Tree of Whispers by completing new Whisper bounties and hunting down Headrotten enemies that have been stolen from the Tree of Whispers. Like some previous seasons, specific zones on the map will periodically transform into Headhunt zones where numerous Headrotten enemies can be found. After completing bounties in the zone, there is a rare chance for an Uprooted Cocoon to spawn a deadly boss that, once slain, can be returned to the coven underneath the Tree of Whispers for a greater reward. Players can also discover Rootholds within Headrotten zones. These seasonal dungeons need a key to unlock, but will further aid players in increasing their standing with the coven. The Tree of Whispers will additionally have a chance of rewarding players with an Ancestral Collection, which guarantees at least one Ancestral item.

Nature Is Your Frenemy In First Look At Forest Reigns

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 03:38

There have been countless post-apocalyptic video games before, and nature rarely behaves the same way that it does in our world. In Forest Reigns, nature appears to not only be alive in the new world, but also aware and thinking. In the game's announcement trailer below, a human makes the mistake of accidentally damaging a tree, which invites immediate retaliation from the plants.

Forest Reigns is a first-person shooter that is being developed by VG Entertainment Studio--the Ukrainian developer behind Survarium and Fear the Wolves. The new game takes place in Paris after the City of Light has been reclaimed by nature and transformed into a jungle. Even the wildlife seem to have evolved, as the errant gunshot in the video above ricocheted off the skull of a mutated warthog. If that's any indication of how the other animals have changed, then humanity may be in some serious trouble.

However, nature is the great equalizer in this game. It can turn against you if you harm it, but nature can also be harnessed against your enemies if you set them up for it. Regardless, it would be a mistake to let your guard down, as nature can just as easily turn against the player if they make the wrong move. The player's choices will also determine the events of the story.

Everhood 2 Brings New Guitar Hero-Inspired RPG Battles This March

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 02:43

If you were hoping to see more Guitar Hero-inspired boss encounters, you're in luck. Everhood 2, a trippy RPG inspired by rhythm games and the likes of Undertale, is releasing on March 4 for PC and Switch.

First announced in 2024, the sequel tells a new story in the existing universe. You'll play as a hero who is guided by a mysterious figure beyond the river of death, with the task of confronting the Mind Dragon. In order to achieve this, you'll once again take part in rhythm game battles, in which you dodge and counterattack music notes, as if you were a small character on a Guitar Hero grid.

There'll be over 100 songs available in the game, although not all of them will be for battles--developer Foreign Gnomes estimates an 8-to-10-hour playthrough. Combat is also being revamped with the option to upgrade weapons.

New Marvel Rivals Characters Will Release Much More Often Than You Might Expect

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 02:04

One of the impressive things about Marvel Rivals on launch day was its massive roster of heroes and supervillains. From Spider-Man to Hela, each character looked and felt great to play as, and developer NetEase has ambitious plans to expand its cast of characters regularly. The studio aims to add two new characters in every future season, alongside updates, new maps, and more story content.

"Every season we'll be rolling out fresh seasonal stories, new maps, and new heroes. We'll actually be breaking down each season into two halves," game director Guangyun Chen said to Metro. "The length of one season is three months. And for each half of the season, we will introduce a new hero. We just eventually want to continue to enhance the experience, and, you know, keep everyone excited in our community."

The first Dracula-themed season of Marvel Rivals has kicked off and will see the Fantastic Four added to the game. Two members of Marvel's first family, Mister Fantastic and Susan "The Invisible Woman" Storm, are already available, and the Human Torch and The Thing will join them at a later date.

Until Dawn Movie Has A Unique Mechanic Inspired By The Game, See First Footage

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 01:02

The first look at Sony's Until Dawn movie has arrived, providing a glimpse at the video game adaptation. This is not a trailer, though, but instead the key creatives appear in the video to discuss their ambitions for the project, with footage from the film cut in between the quotes.

One of the first things that is apparent is that the Until Dawn movie does not re-tell the story of the game, but instead tells a new, original story within the universe. Peter Stormare's character, Dr. Hill, from the game appears in the movie as the connective tissue, however. The original game featured Hollywood actors like Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, but they will apparently not show up in the film.

The Until Dawn movie cast includes Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Maia Mitchell, Ella Rubin, Belmont Cameli, Ji-young Yoo, and Willem van der Vegt, in addition to Stormare.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Review - Apes Hit

Games Reviews - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 01:00

Donkey Kong has always been the more brutal, off-putting relative to the affable, approachable Mario brothers. Both Donkey Kong Country and the Super Marios are classic side-scrolling platformers at their core, but DKC has been known less for joyful leaping and more for clenching your jaw. Now as the Nintendo Switch approaches its eighth year and Nintendo is increasingly reaching into its back catalog for ports, DKC Returns is back with a package that combines all the features of the Wii and 3DS versions--including some assists and visual enhancements--but still feels tough-as-nails in a way that could push away more casual platformer fans.

DKC Returns HD does retain the tweaks made to the 2013 3DS port, including a Modern mode (originally called New mode in the 3DS version) with additional items in Cranky's shop and an extra pip of health. The items in Cranky's shop are especially tuned to let you selectively tweak the difficulty, since the banana coins currency are so plentiful that you'll almost always have enough to spare on an item or two. Those items range from help finding collectible puzzle pieces to temporary invincibility. You can always opt for the original mode to play with the original Wii difficulty, if that's more your flavor. And it does look nicely polished on Switch, especially on the OLED screen. That said, the character models look relatively simplistic compared to Tropical Freeze, a 2014 Wii U game that was already ported to Switch in 2018.

The Modern mode is meant to sand off the edges of the notoriously punishing game and make it more approachable, but make no mistake: This is still a brutally difficult game. Even with three hearts instead of the original two, it's very easy to lose multiple lives (or near the end, tens of lives) in a single stage as you learn its rhythms and assorted traps. And the difficulty in DKC Returns is true to its roots, which centers heavily on memorization. The game frequently introduces threats too quickly to react to the first time, and DK himself feels stiff and heavy compared to the acrobatic Mario. Trickier stages will even give the appearance of one type of obstacle and then frustratingly punish you for reacting to the fake-out.

Diablo-Style ARPG Gameplay Mixes With Extraction Shooters In Project Pantheon

Game News - Wed, 01/15/2025 - 01:00

The newly announced ARPG Project Pantheon is looking to bring a fresh twist to the genre by combining the gameplay and loot of Diablo with the high-stakes survival of extraction shooters.

Developed by Wolcen Studio (whose previous game, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, is also an ARPG) and described as an "ExtrAction RPG," Project Pantheon will be free-to-play and see players transported to a mysterious afterlife where they are tasked by Death to battle through realms inspired by different mythologies. Along the way, players will upgrade their base of operations and battle through maps featuring PvPvE combat, where those who escape will bring home valuable loot while those slain in battle may lose their gear for good. Wolcen says the game will also feature a player-driven economy where players can trade with one another.

Though the game's first revealed environment is a "fantastical reinterpretation" of Norse mythology, Wolcen states in a press release that Project Pantheon's dark fantasy world will draw "inspiration from a vast and diverse array of traditional tales and cultures from around the world."
