The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is almost here, and to celebrate, Lego has just unveiled new BrickHeadz collectibles of the show's main cast. The collection launches October 1 and will include four buildable figures of characters Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, and Will Byers. Preorders are available now for $40 at Lego's online store. We expect these will be a popular collector's item, so grab them while you can.

Lego Stranger Things BrickHeadz (542 pieces) $40 | Releases October 1

Like other BrickHeadz collectibles, the Lego Stranger Things BrickHeadz set is designed to adapt the look--and '80s fashion--of the characters they're based on in an adorable blocky form. Each figure stands securely on a display base, and there are a few accessories like a walkie-talkie for Mike, a headset for Dustin, and a slingshot and binoculars for Lucas. Preorders are available exclusively at Lego, and it's rare for Brickheadz sets to appear at other retailers.

This is only the second Stranger Things set released by Lego so far. There was also The Upside Down Lego playset, but it's unfortunately been sold out for a while--so if you're looking to add some Stranger Things to your Lego collection, grab these Brickheadz while you can.

Stranger Things: The Complete Scripts Volumes 1-4 Preorders

Stranger Things fans will also want to check out the upcoming Stranger Things: The Complete Scripts book series that collects the Duffer Brothers' screenplays for each of the show's first four seasons into individual volumes. The first two volumes in the four-book series launch September 2, while Volumes 3 and 4 will arrive on December 9. Preorders for all four paperback editions are available for $30 each at Amazon.

Lego's Massive Batman Arkham Asylum Set Doubles As A Unique Advent Calendar

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 10:30

As part of its San Diego Comic-Con showcase, Lego has unveiled the next large-scale Batman building set for adults and collectors. Batman Arkham Asylum is a massive 2,953-piece Lego interpretation of the psychiatric hospital in Gotham City where many of the Caped Crusader's longtime foes are often confined (before escaping again). This highly detailed recreation of Arkham Asylum comes with 16 minifigures and has a modular design that Lego says can double as a 24-day buildable Advent Calendar.

Lego DC Batman Arkham Asylum launches September 9 and is available to preorder for $300 exclusively at the Lego Store.

Lego DC Arkham Asylum (2,953 Pieces) $300 | Releases September 9

Though Lego DC Arkham Asylum isn't officially categorized as an Advent Calendar, the build is seemingly a great fit for one-piece-per-day setup of the popular holiday countdown calendars. You can build one chunk of the building each day for 24 days. Considering it comes with sprawling collection of 16 Batman heroes and villains as minifigures, you'll get a new character most days, too.

Here's the full list of minifigures included with Lego DC Batman Arkham Asylum:

  • Batman
  • Robin
  • Batwoman
  • Catwoman
  • Batwing
  • The Joker
  • Harley Quinn
  • The Riddler
  • The Penguin
  • Bane
  • Mr. Freeze
  • Poison Ivy
  • Scarecrow
  • Killer Croc
  • Security Guard (x2)

Lego's actual Advent Calendars are substantially smaller than this--the 2025 editions retail for $45 and release September 1--so this would be quite the lavish choice for your countdown this year.

You can, of course, completely ignore the Advent Calendar approach and build the entire set in one weekend. The full three-story asylum is 10.23 x 9.84 x 12.59 inches. If that sounds a bit small based on the piece count, it's because this is more densely packed with a huge emphasis on the rooms inside. Plus, unlike some Lego sets that don't have exterior walls around the sides and back, Arkham Asylum is a complete structure.

After finishing the build, you can separate the three floors to show off and make changes to the furnished rooms and holding cells. Sections on each floor are designed to be easily removable, too. Prison cell doors can swing open with the press of a button, and you can let the villains decorate their cells with 65 stickers pulled from Batman lore.

All of the minifigures come wit transparent stands that attach to the building or front yard. The stands are designed to create active poses, as if you paused a movie.

The build also comes with an Arkham Asylum inmate transport van. In the promotional images, the van is operated by Harley Quinn, who is clearly on the verge of successfully breaking Joker out of the hospital.

Arkham Asylum is one of several exciting Lego sets making its debut at SDCC. Lego also unveiled its Game Boy building set, a 421-piece replica of the original Nintendo Game Boy. The Lego Game Boy releases October 1, the same day as the newly announced Stranger Things BrickHeadz. The four-pack of buildable figures is only the second Stranger Things Lego set--the first launched back in 2019--and arrives just in time for the long-awaited final season on Netflix. Lego will also expand its lineup of Wicked building sets with six new products, including display models for adults and playsets, on September 1.

Game Boy Lego Set Is Only $60, Includes Mario & Zelda Cartridges

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 10:30
Preorder at Lego Store

After months of rumors and speculation, Lego has fully unveiled its brick-built recreation of the Nintendo Game Boy. Slated for launch October 1, the Lego Game Boy is available to preorder now at the Lego Store; it's not marked as an exclusive, so preorders should open at major retailers soon, too. The 421-piece replica is almost exactly the same size as the handheld that quickly became a worldwide sensation when it hit store shelves in Japan and North America in 1989. The Lego Game Boy looks awesome, and it has multiple interactive features that are sure to make Nintendo fans nostalgic for that wonderful era of handheld gaming.

Lego Game Boy

Part of Lego's display model series geared toward adult builders and collectors, the Game Boy building kit was announced back in January, but we're getting our first official look at the highly anticipated release as part of Lego's San Diego Comic-Con reveals. The Game Boy is tied with the Super Mario Piranha Plant as the most affordable display model in the Lego Nintendo lineup. It will be the eighth Nintendo-themed kit designed for adults since the pair kicked off their partnership with a replica of the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Lego Game Boy (421 Pieces) $60 | Releases October 1

Lego's Game Boy looks like an authentic ode to the Game Boy DMG, all the way down to the font of "Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound" on the screen lens and the colors of the A/B buttons, D-pad, and Start/Select buttons. The switches and dials on the top and sides of handheld are located right where you'd expect them: power switch on the top left, contrast wheel on the left side next to the battery indicator light, volume dial across from it on the right, and the 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom.

Along with the Game Boy itself and a buildable stand to display your model, the set includes replica Game Paks (cartridges) of two timeless classics: Super Mario Land (1989) and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (1993). The cartridges can be loaded into the Game Pak slot just like a real Game Boy. You can display the other cartridge on a second buildable stand.

The Game Boy doesn't have any electronic components, so it won't interact with the Mario/Luigi/Peach figures from the Lego Super Mario starter courses, but it can be displayed as if you are actually playing these games. The set comes with three different screens: the boot screen that greets you each time you flip the power switch, a still from World 1-1 of Super Mario Land, and the cutscene in Link's Awakening where you sit next to Marin on a log and have a pretty strange (one-sided) conversation.

Preorder at Lego Store Lego Nintendo Display Models for AdultsLego Nintendo Entertainment System

The Lego Game Boy's interactive features such as loading carts and displaying scenes from actual games is reminiscent of the Lego NES. Released back in August 2020 to launch Lego's partnership with Nintendo, the 2,646-piece set included the console with a functional top loader, a Super Mario Bros. cartridge, a wired NES controller, and a CRT TV with a stand. There's a crank on the side of the TV that moves Mario through a side-scrolling level. Even five years later, the NES is arguably the coolest gaming-related Lego set.

There's no shortage of open-world souls-like games these days, but Hell Is Us--which launches for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 4--puts a new twist on the action-RPG genre by emphasizing immersive exploration--there's no map, waypoints, or quest markers, so you'll need to learn the in-game environments to navigate the world. If that premise intrigues you, you can preorder the game now in multiple versions, including a $60 physical standard edition and $80 Deluxe Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X. While there are no in-game preorder bonus items announced for Hell Is Us, those who grab the Deluxe Edition will get three-day early access to the full game starting September 1, plus a bunch of digital extras exclusive to this version--so consider grabbing it if you're eager to try out the new sci-fi action RPG.

Hell Is Us $60 | Releases September 4

The standard edition keeps things simple--you get the full game on your platform of choice. If you opt for the physical version on PS5 or Xbox Series X, you'll also get a boxed copy to add to your shelf. Preorders are available at Amazon and Walmart. Set in the early '90s in the fictionalized hermit nation of Hadea, players take on the role of Remi. Returning to his nation of birth, Remi is aiming to learn more about his past and find his parents, but that's easier said than done when the landscape around him is being torn apart by a phenomenon called the Calamity, which has introduced violent creatures to the country.

What sets Hell Is Us apart is that it refuses to hold your hand, as you'll need to pay attention during conversations, gather clues, and use that knowledge to chart your own path forward. "Some players will thrive on the level of player agency Hell is Us offers, while others will butt their heads against it and quit in frustration," Dan Ryckert wrote in GameSpot's Hell Is Us preview. "I'm leaning toward the former--this is a game filled with bold, confident, deliberate design decisions on the part of Rogue Factor, and it'll be interesting to see how players react when it releases September 4."

A Final Fantasy 9 Remake Sounds Disastrous, But Could Prove An Important Point About Modern Video Games

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 06:01

This piece contains spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Final Fantasy IX.

With recent rumors swirling about a remake of Final Fantasy IX, I can’t help but feel a bit anxious. A lot of my hesitation stems from the fact that Square Enix has already released a remaster of the original Final Fantasy IX that’s playable on modern hardware, perfectly preserving it for those of us who love it while also making it accessible for players who want to experience it for the first time. An even bigger factor, however, is Square Enix's treatment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, and the way the gaming industry views remakes as a whole.

Game preservation is a hot topic in the world of gaming right now. According to the Video Game History Foundation, approximately 87% of all video games from before 2010 are "critically endangered,” meaning only about 13% of those video games are readily accessible today. That’s a lot of video games that are at risk of being lost to time with no way to recover them.

Battlefield 6 Release Date Reportedly Leaks

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 06:00

Battlefield 6 is set for its official unveiling on July 24, but a new report might have spoiled some of the surprise. A report from reputable leaker Dealabs claims Battlefield 6 will launch on October 10 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

An October release date for Battlefield 6 was previously reported, so it's not a total shock. The latest rumor is that Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will release on November 14. If both dates are legitimate, that would put about a month of time between both releases.

It's been four years since there were new entries in the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises releasing the same year, going back to 2021 with Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042.

About 30% Of The Order: 1886 Was Cut Months Before Launch, Says Ready At Dawn Co-Founder

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 05:32

If there's one thing Ready at Dawn co-founder Ru Weerasuriya wishes he could've done differently with The Order: 1886, it's getting more development time for the PS4 exclusive. He revealed in a new interview that the studio cut roughly 30% of the game to hit the game's release date in February 2015.

Speaking with The Game Business, Weerasuriya discussed how "we really hoped to make a sequel" to The Order: 1886 and ruminated on what happened with the game's lackluster critical reception. "The game length [GameSpot's reviewer said it took 6 hours to finish] ... that's something that a lot of people talked about at the time," Weerasuriya said. "We cut ... I want to say 30% of the game a few months before it was released. We decided it had to come out in the time allotted. Were we to do it again, I would've probably tried to figure out a way to extend the development."

In the week leading up to the game's launch on February 20, 2015, a leaked playthrough of The Order: 1886 appeared on YouTube and showed a person beating the game in five hours. This led to Ready at Dawn denying that claim days later, arguing the game's length was roughly eight to 10 hours long.

As for the promised cross-play feature and netcode improvements, Sloclap said these efforts require "the work of specialists in their domain."

"We can't put all our resources on these topics to make them happen faster," Sloclap said. However, the studio teased that it's making "very good progress" and will have more news to share soon.

Tired Of Mashing Buttons In Donkey Kong Bananza? Get A Controller With Turbo

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 02:50

Donkey Kong Bananza has been out for a few days now, and if you're anything like me, you can't help but smash DK's fists through everything in sight in search of fossils, treasure chests, and hidden areas with Golden Bananas (technically called Banandium Gems). Hearing "Oh! Banana!" and watching DK's eyes light up like he's looking at his newborn child for the first time makes me chuckle 100-plus unearthed bananas later. But while Donkey Kong's fists might be made of steel, my thumbs are not. Bashing buttons repeatedly to carve tunnels does indeed get a bit tiresome. Players of a certain age (like me) may also find their thumbs getting sore. If this describes you, I'd recommend a Switch 2 controller with a turbo button, ideally one with remappable buttons, too.

Relive 1983's Sci-Fi Classic Krull With New Steelbook 4K Blu-Ray

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 02:17

Released in 1983, Krull is a unique mash-up of fantasy and science fiction. It didn't exactly set the world on fire when it first hit theaters, with paltry box office results and unimpressive reviews from critics. But time seems to have been kind to the film, which has earned something of a cult following over the years. If you're one of its dedicated fans (or you're interested in checking out one of the wild movies of the 80s), the Krull 4K Steelbook is available to preorder ahead of its launch on September 16.

The Krull 4K Steelbook includes 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and digital formats of the film. Of course, you're also getting a flashy steelbook, which features artwork across the front, back, and interior of the case. It's arguably the coolest way to show off Krull in your collection, though the existing Vintage DVD looks pretty great (but you'll have to put up with DVD quality).

Battlefield 6 Teases All-Out War Ahead Of Full Reveal

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 01:44

After a lengthy stretch of rumors, reports and leaks, the next major installment in the Battlefield franchise is finally being unveiled on July 24. Before then though, we've received Battlefield 6's first teaser, and things are looking pretty chaotic out there.

The scattered teaser primarily cuts between several news clips providing a lot of context for the game's inevitable conflict. Of significant note is the trailer's emphasis on the collapse of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is an alliance of existing world militaries. In the broadest sense, this alliance is meant to act as a form of deterrence, both to prevent members from fighting and to prevent outside states from attacking a member.

Pax Armata rises as NATO cracks. Their motto? “Our protection, your peace.”

— Battlefield (@Battlefield) July 23, 2025

Battlefield 6 seems to kick off with an attack on NATO though, with much of the teaser focusing on news reports from all around the world about an attack on a NATO base in Mukhrovani, Georgia. Interspersed between these reports is other alarming news stemming from the fallout of this attack, including the assassination of a secretary general at NATO HQ, a frenzied social media response, and the US president's mobilization of armed forces.

For comparison, the company's previous HD60 X could only record at 60fps in 1080p, dropping to 30fps for 4K footage--that should make for an appreciable upgrade for those upgrading to this new capture card. The Elgato 4K S features a USB-C port (5Gbps) and two HDMI 2.0 ports. Setup is just as easy as Elgato's other gadgets, requiring little more a USB-C and two HDMI cables to connect the card to your display, gameplay output source, and PC or recording device.

Early reviews of the Elgato 4K S are overwhelmingly positive, with users noting its portable form factor, minimal input lag, and capture quality. So if you're a creator looking to make the jump to 4K content without breaking the bank, the Elgato 4K S certainly seems like it's worth a closer look.

While this is a leap over the HD60 X, the Elgato 4K S is not a replacement for the premium Elgato 4K X ($245), which is capable of capturing 4K footage at up to 144fps. The 4K X also offers a few additional bonuses, such as added HDR support, HDMI 2.1 ports, and 10Gbps USB-C ports. While most streamers will be just fine sticking with the 4K S's 4K 60fps capture quality, those who demand the highest quality will still find the 4K X the better option.

Assassin's Creed Shadows Exec Teases "New Versions" Amid Switch 2 Rumors

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 00:57

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows may come to more platforms beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. As part of the company's latest earnings briefing, CEO Yves Guillemot discussed what's next for the game, saying fans can look forward to the Claws of Awaji expansion this October and then "we also have some new versions that will come to other machines."

VGC reported that Guillemot was also asked specifically about the company's plans for Switch 2. He said Ubisoft "hasn't said" which games it's bringing to Switch 2, but some believe Shadows could be among them.

A listing on PEGI's website suggested that Shadows may come to Switch 2, but nothing is confirmed as of yet. Ubisoft has, however, already announced that Star Wars Outlaws is headed to Switch 2 on September 4.

Switch 2 Helps Shatter A US Hardware June Sales Record That Stood For 17 Years - Circana

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 00:13

It's safe to say Switch 2 has gotten off to a hot start. So hot, in fact, that Circana reports the hybrid system propelled overall hardware spending in the US to $978 million for June, obliterating the previous record of $608 million spent 17 years ago in June 2008.

Circana executive director Mat Piscatella also shared on BlueSky that Switch 2 achieved the best first-month system sales ever in the US. Nintendo's new console reportedly sold 1.6 million units last month after launching June 5. That easily topped the previous record-holder, PS4. Sony's system debuted in November 2013 by selling 1.1 million units. Also of note is the fact Switch 2 didn't arrive during the popular holiday season, with November and December usually serving as the highest spending months for the video game industry.

Nintendo hasn't officially updated hardware sales numbers since announcing Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units in four days. Earlier this week, Famitsu reported Switch 2 broke the first-month hardware sales record in Japan, too. The system reportedly sold over 1.5 million units there, shattering GBA's record that lasted for almost a quarter of a century.

"Father of Elder Scrolls" Julian LeFay Has Died

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 00:12

Julian LeFay, widely regarded as "the father of The Elder Scrolls", has passed away at the age of 59, following what his studio described as a "courageous battle with cancer." His death was confirmed by OnceLost Games, the studio he co-founded, which called his passing "an immeasurable loss for our team, our community, and our industry."

According to CEO Ted Peterson, LeFay stepped away from work just a week before his death, choosing to spend his final days surrounded by family. Despite his illness, he remained actively involved in development, continuing to guide the team, mentor younger developers, and help shape The Wayward Realms to reflect his signature design philosophy and creative ambition.

Lefay was a key figure behind The Elder Scrolls: Arena and Daggerfall, two titles that laid the foundation for one of the most influential franchises in gaming history. His legacy was so deeply embedded in the series that the in-game deity Julianos was named in his honor. In 2019, LeFay teamed up with fellow former Bethesda developers Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman to establish OnceLost Games, announcing their ambitious new RPG, The Wayward Realms, in 2021.

Microsoft Confirms No $80 Xbox Games After All

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 00:09

Microsoft announced earlier this year that it would begin charging $80 for some of its new games, including The Outer Worlds 2. However, that's no longer the case.

Obsidian has announced that The Outer Worlds 2 will launch at $70 for the standard edition. A spokesperson for Microsoft told IGN that none of its games will be $80 this holiday. To be sure, no game from Microsoft beyond The Outer Worlds 2 was announced with an $80 price point (though some theorized Black Ops 7 would be $80), but in any event, Microsoft won't charge that much for any title this year.

"We're focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99--in line with current market conditions," the spokesperson said.
