Saints Row Studio Was Too Expensive For What They Were, Exec Says

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 06:18

Saints Row studio Volition shut down in 2023 after 30 years, leading many to wonder about the future of the open-world crime franchise. The fate of the franchise is unknown, but Saber Interactive founder Matthew Karch shared some context surrounding the series. In short, he said the developer got too expensive to maintain.

"The Saints Row team is gone. They were so expensive for what they were," Karch told Stephen Totilo for his GameFile newsletter, as reported by GamesRadar. "They didn't know what they were building. They didn't have any real direction. It couldn't last. And so, who's going to fund them for the next game after that disaster?"

The newest Saints Row game was the 2022 reboot. The game underperformed commercial expectations at launch, but Embracer's CEO said he was confident the game would make money and serve as a "starting point" for the series going forward.

There's A Free Game To Grab On Steam Today

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 06:14

As a special 24-hour promotion, developer Lucid 11 is offering Party Club for free on Steam, with the price rising to $16 afterward. There is also a special in-game outfit that players can unlock by checking out the co-op game on today's release.

Party Club seems similar to the popular Overcooked series, as people work together to serve customers. In this game, however, the consumers are furry creatures and seating considerations must be addressed. For example, Lucid 11 states that putting a panda bear at the same table as a tiger could create serious issues.

That's not all, either. Party Club stands out in a couple of ways from other meal-preparing experiences. The online co-op title (for up to four people) lets players set up their location before hitting a gong to open up shop to animal customers. Also, hilariously, if you're tired of working on mixology, Party Club allows for fighting clientele and removing them from the premises.

Amazon is producing a new God of War TV show for Prime Video, and the company is apparently pretty confident in it. According to writer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, For All Mankind), Amazon has already ordered a second season, even before Season 1 has aired.

Appearing on The Sackhoff Show with Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff, Moore said the God of War TV show is his current project, and writers are now putting the show together.

"Right now I'm working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they asked me to come in, I'm literally in the writers room and that's my new thing," he said, as reported by GamesRadar.

Fan Speculate Switch 2 Might Be Getting GameCube Controller Support After New Filing

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 04:51

Despite being more than 20 years old, the GameCube controller remains stubbornly popular with Nintendo fans, especially when it comes to certain games. A new FCC filing by Nintendo has some fans speculating that the Switch 2 might receive some kind of GameCube controller support, but it's unclear if the connection is valid or not.

Over at Famiboards (via Nintendo Life), fans reacted to a FCC filing from Nintendo that tackled game controllers. Fans noticed that the model number prefix attached is BEE, which corresponds to the Switch 2. A mockup of a "wireless Bluetooth controller" led one fan to overlay the GameCube controller over it, concluding that the controller may be some kind of wireless GameCube controller for the Switch 2.

Some other fans argued that the mockup could be for the Switch 2 Pro Controller, but the original poster argued that this controller lacks NFC functionality, which a hypothetical Pro Controller would almost certainly have.

BioShock 4 – Everything We Know

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 04:41

2K's BioShock series has seen three installments so far, and a fourth game is now in the works–with some key changes compared to the original three. For starters, series creator Ken Levine is not actively involved in the next game, which we will refer to in this post as BioShock 4 until 2K gives the game an actual name.

Beyond Levine not being directly involved, the new game is being made at an entirely new studio, Cloud Chamber. In this post, we're rounding up everything we know about the next BioShock game, and we'll continue to update this as more information eventually comes to light.

Table of Contents [hide]When will BioShock 4 be released?

The new BioShock game was announced in December 2019, and as part of that announcement, 2K confirmed only that the game was happening. It did not provide any release date, or even a release window, for when it might be available. At the time, 2K and developer Cloud Chamber said the game would be in development for "the next several years." It's now 2025, and there have not been any significant updates about the game since, however.

Horizon Actor Ashly Burch "Worried" In Wake Of AI Aloy Video

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 04:38

Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West actor Ashly Burch, who plays main character Aloy across Guerrilla Games' sci-fi franchise, is speaking up in the wake of a leaked video showing an AI-powered Aloy.

As reported by The Verge, the since-removed video showed an internal tech demo in which Sony Interactive Entertainment's director of software engineering Sharwin Raghoebardajal held a conversation with an AI-powered Aloy. Raghoebardajal said in the video the AI Aloy was a prototype designed alongside Guerrilla Games to demonstrate what could be possible with the technology.

Burch took to TikTok over the weekend to say she had seen the leaked video and that Guerrilla Games had reached out to let her know that the AI tech demo did not use any of Burch's performance data (voice and motion capture) and was not a project that was in active development. But that didn't change the fact that Burch said the video made her worried, not about Guerrilla, Aloy, or her career specifically, but about game performance as a whole.

Empyreal Will Rip Open The Fabric Of Reality This May, Has Unique Charity System

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 04:30

Developer Silent Games and publisher Secret Mode have announced that its upcoming single-player action-RPG Empyreal will be released on May 8 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. On a distant world where humanity has discovered a strange monolith built by a lost civilization, players will explore this location while mastering various weapons and RPG systems.

In a developer diary, creative director Joseph Rogers went into more detail on the game, describing it as a third-person game about "transcendental revelations" that players will discover as they venture deeper into the monolith. Thematically, Empyreal asks questions about the human condition, its place in the cosmos, and whether societal systems like duty and honor are still driving forces in humanity's story.

When it comes to gameplay, Empyreal combines action-RPG systems with elements inspired by isometric-ARPG games like Diablo. Similarly to games in this genre, you'll be free to invest in various skills, but you can only have a handful of them available to use at any given time, so you will need to mix and match the abilities to suit your playstyle.

Call Of Duty Veteran Creates New PlayStation Studio, Dark Outlaw Games

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 04:21

Call of Duty veteran Jason Blundell's first major post-Activision project was the PlayStation-partnered Deviation Games, but it opened and closed without even announcing or releasing a game. Now Blundell is starting a new company with PlayStation.

Blundell said in an interview with Jeff Gerstmann that he's starting Dark Outlaw Games, which is a new studio inside of PlayStation Studios. "We've been working away in the shadows for a while. When we've got something to talk about we'll step out into the light," he said, as reported by VGC.

Blundell said it's "such a privilege" to be the newest first-party PlayStation studio. "Sony doesn't start up first-party studios all the time, so to have that privilege is humbling," he said.

This Massive New Alien Graphic Novel Revisits One Of The Most Terrifying Alien Storylines

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 03:38

The Alien franchise is best known for its numerous films, but the sci-fi horror property also spans video games, books, and graphic novels. Soon, one of the best comic runs, Alien: Galaxy of Nightmares, is getting a chunky new paperback omnibus edition on June 9. The collection will compile 19 issues written by Eisner Award-nominated author Phillip Kennedy Johnson, and fans can preorder it now for $45 at Amazon.

Alien: Galaxy of Nightmares $45 | Releases on June 3

Alien: Galaxy of Nightmares is a 456-page omnibus that features Alien (2021) 1-12, Alien (2022) 1-6, and Alien Annual (2022) 1, all of which are written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, with art by Salvador Larroca, Julius Ohta, and Gabriele Dell'Otto. Johnson's first storyline follows Gabriel Cruz, a retired security chief for the Weyland-Yutani corporation who takes on a suicide mission to save his son from Xenomorphs. The second storyline is set in an off-world terraforming station manned by a religious sect--and surprise--it's infested by Xenomorphs. One brave woman dying from a rare disease decides to face them head-on in an effort to protect her flock.

The final major arc in this trade paperback spotlights a team of military-grade Synths--androids like Bishop and David from the films--who escape service and settle on a backwater planet. When the United Systems come knocking with an offer to ensure their peace if they retrieve biotechnology from a planet crawling with Xenomorphs, the fabled "Steel Team" suits up for one final mission that could spell the end of this legendary squad.

Preorder on Amazon

If you don't want to wait for the Alien: Galaxy of Nightmares collection, you can also pick up Phillip Kennedy Johnson's runs in individual trade editions. Volume 1: Bloodlines is available in a physical paperback edition for $18, while Volume 3: Icarus is $15 (was $18). Physical copies of Volume 2: Revival are hard to find, but you can pick up a Kindle version for $11 (was $13). Picking up all three will be more expensive than the upcoming Galaxy of Nightmares collection edition listed above, but the upshot is they're available now.

Marvel also has also given the Alien franchise its own "What If...?" series. Similar to the Marvel Universe "What If...?" series, this trade paperback takes a look at several pivotal moments in the Alien movies and ponders how the story would have played out differently. You can grab the Aliens: What If...? trade paperback edition for $15.30 (was $18)

Star Wars Strategy Game From Bit Reactor And Respawn Will Be Revealed In April

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 03:37

Star Wars Celebration in Japan will be where the fun begins for an untitled strategy game from developer Bit Reactor and producer Respawn Entertainment. The turn-based tactics game set within the Star Wars universe will get its own panel at the event on April 19, promising to show off "a first look."

The official Star Wars Celebration panel schedule revealed this morsel of information about the strategy game. It was over three years ago when EA announced that Apex Legends studio Respawn was teaming up with a new developer named Bit Reactor to create a Star Wars tactics game. Little has been divulged since then, though Bit Reactor confirmed it was still in the works last year after a Star Wars FPS from Respawn was reportedly canceled.

The Star Wars strategy game from developer Bit Reactor and producer Respawn Entertainment will get its official unveiling at Star Wars Celebration next month in Japan.

This will be Bit Reactor's first game. However, the studio touts quite the pedigree, saying on its website that the team has "collectively developed some of the most successful games you've heard of, such as XCOM, Civilization, Gears of War, and Elders Scrolls Online."

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 02:53

Following the official first look at Karl Urban Johnny Cage in the live-action Mortal Kombat 2 movie, more details on the film, its characters, and the high stakes for EarthRealm have been revealed. 2021's Mortal Kombat set the stage for an Outworld invasion, and after EarthRealm's chosen fighters successfully defeated Shang Tsung and his forces, the sequel will see them clash with Emperor Shao Kahn's forces in a tournament to decide the fate of the realms.

As mentioned above, Johnny Cage is a new face in the EarthRealm crowd, and he'll be the point-of-view character in the sequel. While the current Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat games is primarily played as a former A-list action star who can't stop making movie references, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon says that the new live-action incarnation will feel "fresh" in several ways.

Undertale Sees New Peak For Steam Concurrent Players Nearly A Decade After Launching

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 01:31

It's hard to comprehend that Undertale will be 10 years old later this year. But new audiences apparently keep finding the RPG, as the game broke its own Steam record for concurrent players on Sunday with 11,071 people, per SteamDB.

Over the weekend, Undertale developer Toby Fox shared the Steam record for the RPG on X. Funnily enough, Undertale's concurrent players spiked even higher hours after Fox made the social media post. The creator seemingly chalked up the huge boost in players to the Steam Spring Sale--which is running now through March 20--as the game costs $1. Usually, Undertale retails for $10 on Valve's storefront.

Since going on sale on Steam for only $1, UNDERTALE reached a new peak of concurrent players for the first time since 2015!
(It's still on sale for a few more days...) pic.twitter.com/wlwcnwnGgd

— tobyfox (@tobyfox) March 15, 2025

Undertale originally launched on PC in September 2015. The subversive RPG became critically acclaimed and grew a passionate fanbase, coming to consoles like Switch in 2018. To give an idea on the game's impact, Undertale's Sans character came to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii Fighter. Additionally, Fox ended up composing music for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The developer is currently busy with Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4, which are slated for release this year.

The Boys Star Jack Quaid Wants To Be In BioShock Movie, Currently Obsessed With FromSoft Games

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 00:14

A BioShock movie is in the works at Netflix, and The Boys actor Jack Quaid has said he would "love" to be in it. In a Reddit AMA to promote his new movie, Novocaine, Quaid said BioShock is one of his favorite video games ever, adding that the franchise has "such a rich lore" that would lend itself to a TV show or a movie adaptation.

Netflix announced a BioShock movie years ago, but we haven't heard much about it since. A report from 2024 said the movie was undergoing a big shift, with producer Roy Lee saying the movie has been "reconfigured" to become a "more personal film" due to budget cuts at Netflix.

"The new regime has lowered the budgets," Lee said, as reported by Variety. "So we're doing a much smaller version… It's going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project."

The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Introduce One Of The Creepiest Infected Enemies From The Games

Tue, 03/18/2025 - 00:09

Ahead of its release next month on HBO Max, The Last of Us actor Pedro Pascal has begun speaking more about the second season of the show. Adapted from the critically acclaimed sequel, The Last of Us season two is set five years after the first series and the fallout from its season finale. With bigger stakes and strained relationships, Pedro Pascal--who plays Joel--explained in an interview that everything established in the first season of the post-apocalyptic show is being amplified for its return to TV.

"It's definitely a bigger, far more ambitious, and risk-taking season," Pascal said to Empire. "And, if it can even be imagined, further tests our strength against a world we're already afraid to be in."

While you can expect plenty of drama between the cast as they find themselves in intense situations, the monsters of The Last of Us won't be taking a backseat to all of this squabbling. Showrunner Craig Mazin added that viewers will get to see more Cordyceps-infected people in season two, including the infamous stalkers who harassed players in the video game.
