Kojima Explains Why Physint Is His Return To MGS-Like Action/Espionage

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 06:39

In addition to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hideo Kojima has his next few years of game development laid out for him between his horror title OD and Physint, an upcoming action-espionage game that will revisit the genre of his most famous creation, Metal Gear Solid. Now, Kojima has disclosed that the genesis of his return to the MGS-style genre came during a personal health crisis.

"Of course, I have lots of new ideas that I want to create, but when I became sick during the pandemic, I realized that a lot of people wanted me to make something like Metal Gear," Kojima told Edge Magazine via GamesRadar. "That's when I had the idea for a new espionage game. I reflected, and thought the idea was good."

Like the Death Stranding games, Physint will be published by Sony, while OD will be published by Microsoft. Earlier this year, Kojima noted that both games have been impacted by the ongoing voice actors strike. But even without that delay, Kojima noted that Physint is still "five to six years away" from release, which may push it outside of the current console generation.

Switch 2 Consoles Seem To Already Be In People's Hands

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 06:21

Switch 2 units are seemingly beginning to appear in the wild ahead of the console's official launch next week. Multiple images and videos (some of which were pulled as this article was written) circulating online show what appear to be Switch 2 systems in stores and even potentially already at home with some users.

But the systems may nothing more than paperweights for now, as the Switch 2 is said to be unable to be used without a day-one mandatory online update. That might mean that anything more than further impressions of what it's like to hold the unit will have to wait until launch day. You can read our initial hands-on impressions with Switch 2 for some sense of what to expect.

We can't say for sure if any of the leaks thus far are legitimate. It's a certainty that Nintendo is shipping units to stores ahead of the June 5 launch, so it's possible that some legitimate footage is emerging and that people may have already gotten their hands on a unit.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Steelbook Edition 4K Blu-Ray Is Up For Preorder

The second season of The Last of Us has just wrapped up on HBO Max, but if you know you're going to want to watch it again, multiple physical editions are up for preorder right now, including a 4K Blu-ray with a limited-edition steelbook case. The Last of Us Season 2 releases on Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD on September 23. Retailers are still in the process of creating store pages, but you can preorder The Last of Us Season 2's Limited Edition Steelbook for $47 at Walmart or $40 at Gruv.

Amazon has yet to open preorders, but the retailer does have store pages for all four physical editions, so it should be available to purchase soon.

The Last of Us Season 2 Limited Edition Steelbook (4K Blu-ray) $47 at Walmart / $40 at Gruv | Releases September 23

The Last of Us Season 2's Limited Edition Steelbook features promotional photography of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) with Cordyceps fungus forming a moth--like Ellie's tattoo--in the background. The interior artwork shows Ellie surrounded by a horde of people who have succumbed to the Cordyceps fungus.

Season 1 of The Last of Us didn't receive a Steelbook Edition until March of this year, so it's cool to see Season 2 will have one on launch day. The Last of Us Season 1's Steelbook Edition has been going in and out of stock since its reveal, but Amazon currently has it available for $50.

Season 2's bonus features haven't been revealed yet, but we're hoping to see something similar to the Season 1 release, which includes featurettes on each episode as well as a disc filled with short documentaries and interviews.

We do know that the 4K Blu-ray edition displays in native 4K (2160p) resolution and supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. The infected's growls and the unsettling calling card of Clickers should sound pretty unnerving with Dolby Atmos audio and 7.1 lossless surround sound.

If you don't care about steelbook cases, The Last of Us Season 2 will also be available in three standard edition formats. The 4K Blu-ray standard edition is up for preorder for $35, the 1080p Blu-ray is $30, and the DVD edition is $25.

The Last of Us Season 2 continued HBO's largely faithful adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game franchise. While Season 1 had nine episodes, Season 2 only had seven. The new season adapted a portion of The Last of Us Part II, though it was largely told from Ellie's perspective. Season 3 is expected to flip the script and follow Abby, the other playable character from the second game.

Blizzard Is Giving Away Free WoW Classic: Mists Of Pandaria Boosts, But You'll Have To Earn It

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 04:17

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Classic will launch July 21, Blizzard has announced, and there will be a new way to get brought up to speed for those who haven't played some of the game's previous Classic expansions.

Blizzard has long sold WoW character boosts, and in WoW Classic, started selling them ahead of the arrival of The Burning Crusade Classic. The boosts give players who didn't play the previous expansion a chance (for a price) to jump straight into the new content. This time, however, Blizzard is giving players a way to earn a boost for free, but it will require some legwork.

One free level 85 character boost will be given to players who defeat the Dreadlord Balnazzar, the first boss of the new Scarlet Enclave raid added in April to WoW Classic's more experimental Season of Discovery servers, before June 30. Those who have already defeated Balnazzar prior to the announcement of the promotion will be retroactively awarded a boost.

PS5 Slim Days Of Play 2025 Bundle Comes With A Microsoft-Owned Game

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 03:53

PlayStation’s annual Days of Play sale returns this week with steep discounts on video games, consoles, and accessories from May 28 until June 11. If you’re still in the market for a console, the PS5 Call of Duty: Black Ops Bundle might be the most enticing Days of Play 2025 offer. Pulling together Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and either a PS5 Slim Digital or PS5 Slim Disc console, the bundles are available for $120 below MSRP. The PS5 Slim Call of Duty Bundle goes for $450, while the PS5 Slim Digital Call of Duty Bundle is $400.

PS5 Slim Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Bundle $450 | Valued at $570

This bundle comes with the PS5 Slim with a Disc Drive and a voucher to redeem a digital copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 from the PlayStation Store. You'll also get one white DualSense Controller and three cables: USB-C charging cable, HDMI, and the power cord. If you want to display the PS5 vertically, as shown above, you'll need to buy the Vertical Stand for $30.

Considering the PS5 Slim normally goes for $500 on its own, the $450 bundle is worth checking out even if you have no interest in Call of Duty.

Earlier this year, PlayStation released a PS5 Slim bundle with Astro Bot for the same price. It's sold out at most retailers, but you can still get it for $450 at PS Direct.

The PS5 Slim Digital version of this bundle saves you an additional $50, but you'll miss out on the optical drive, meaning you will only be able to play games downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

If you opt for the Slim Digital and decide later on you want to play physical games, you can purchase the Disc Drive separately for $80. Once again, the Vertical Stand is sold separately.

Beyond these enticing Black Ops bundles, the Days of Play event offers tons of other great deals. PS5 Pro consoles are $50 off, dropping the price of PlayStation's high-end console to $650. This is the first discount on the PS5 Pro since its launch last holiday. You can pair your new console with discounted controllers, as DualSense Edge Controllers are $30 off, and standard DualSense Controllers are $20 off. And if you’re interested in diving into virtual reality, the PlayStation VR 2 headset is dropping its price by $50.

Days of Play also includes deals on PS5 games published by PlayStation Studios. PlayStation hasn't revealed prices yet--or the full list--but we know a handful of titles that will be included: Astro Bot, MLB The Show 25, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Lego Horizon Adventures. Be sure to check back when the sale goes live for the full catalog of game deals.

EA Sports College Football 26 Cover Features Two Top Wide Receivers

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 03:48

After a successful first season with five million players hitting the gridiron in the first week alone, EA Sports College Football 26 will try to build on that momentum as new details are set to emerge later this week. Today, EA Sports announced the cover athletes for this year's game, as well as a Deluxe Edition that features legends from college football's long history.

The Standard Edition of EA Sports College Football 26 will feature Alabama' Ryan Williams and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, two of the top-ranked wide receivers in the country. Both players, like CFB 26, are looking to build off of successful freshman seasons, with Williams totaling 865 yards and eight touchdowns, while Smith logged 1,315 yards and 13 touchdowns for the national champion Buckeyes.

The Division 2 Joins Game Pass Today As Battle For Brooklyn Expansion And Year 7 Launches

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 03:28

It's a big day for Ubisoft's The Division 2, as the game has joined the Xbox Game Pass library alongside the debut of its new expansion, Battle for Brooklyn.

The Division 2 is available via Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Standard. People who subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate get a perk in the form of the free EMS outfit, which itself includes five EMS-themed items.

The Division 2 comes to Game Pass just as the game's seventh year of live service begins with the Year 7 Crossroads update. This season is all about nostalgia, with new modifiers and gear that are callbacks to the original The Division, Ubisoft said. Year 7 also includes a range of quality-of-life improvements, including better onboarding for new players.

Assassin's Creed Shadows Update Adds Two Unexpected Crossovers And Major Parkour Upgrades

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 03:05

Assassin's Creed Shadows update 1.0.5 is now live and, as detailed in the patch notes, brings major improvements to the game's parkour as well as not one, but two, unexpected crossovers.

The first crossover is with the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight. A free Dead by Daylight-inspired quest has been added to Assassin's Creed Shadows that will see Naoe investigate a strange presence attacking the people of Harima. The patch notes state that players will need to "master unique mechanics and confront a formidable otherworldly threat" to complete the event, after which they will be rewarded with a free trinket and banner. Dead by Daylight cosmetics will also be available in the game's store.

As for the second crossover, it's with indie sensation Balatro. A Balatro-inspired trinket for Naoe and an amulet for Yasuke, both called "Winning Hand," have been added via the update. The items sport a legendary perk that has a chance to trigger a random affliction effect on combo enders. Ubisoft, however, isn't simply giving aways the new item. The patch notes state players will need to "work together to figure out how to get it" but doesn't offer any other clues, so let the hunt begin.

Mortal Kombat 1 Devs Respond To Calls For More DLC

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 02:27

Earlier this month, NetherRealm Studios released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, a digital-only package that includes the base game, the Khaos Reigns DLC expansion, and two rounds of fighter packs. Players took it as a sign that MK1 wouldn't be getting any more updates, and bombarded NetherRealm for continued DLC support. Now, NetherRealm has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1's reign is coming to a close.

"We are hearing players' requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1," noted the game's official account on X. "And, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on."

In a later message, NetherRealm acknowledged that fans may be disappointed by the news, before adding that the devs need "to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can."

Fantasy Life i Offers The Cheapest Paid Switch 2 Upgrade Yet

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 02:26

Level-5 has revealed that Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time will be a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title, and that players who already own the game on Switch 1 will be able to upgrade for just $2.59.

Compared to the Nintendo Switch version, Level-5 states that Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will feature reduced load times, improved visuals, and a higher frame rate. Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is set to retail for $62.58, reflecting the fact that a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack from the Switch version will cost $2.59.

This is significantly cheaper than the paid upgrades for other Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, as the upgrades for one like Kirby and the Forgotten Land will cost up to $20. The caveats to all of this is that the Digital Deluxe Edition will only be available for Switch, not Switch 2, and that several Switch 1 games are getting free upgrades for Nintendo's new console.

Upcoming Dragon Quest Remakes Will Be On Switch 2 At Launch This October

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 02:00

Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake will launch on October 30, and added Nintendo Switch 2 as a platform.

Last November, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was released, reimagining the NES classic in the same visual style as games like Octopath Traveler 2 and Triangle Strategy. Before that had even launched, Square Enix had teased that the first two games in the Dragon Quest series, which chronologically take place after Dragon Quest 3, would be getting the HD-2D Remake treatment next and released together in one bundle. GameSpot has gone hands-on with these remakes and called them "a stunning marriage of classic pixel art and modern touches."

Previously confirmed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, this upcoming remake is now slated to release on Nintendo's new console. It's the third Square Enix game confirmed for Switch 2, following Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It will cost $60 across all platforms, although it's worth noting that the Switch 2 physical version will come on a Game-Key Card and require a download to play.

Expedition 33 Dev Has A Theory On Why The Game Is Selling So Well

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 01:55

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been one of 2025's biggest successes so far, and it's now sold more than 3.3 million copies. What contributed to the game's big success? No doubt a number of factors, including its lower price and smaller scope, according to publisher Kepler Interactive.

Kepler's Matthew Handrahan told GI.biz that Expedition 33 "really respects the player's time;" it's not a game that offers size for the sake of size. "It gives them plenty to do, and it gives them plenty of satisfaction, but it isn't arbitrarily 500 hours of gameplay," he said. "It's impactful because it's scoped correctly. […] It doesn't have any sense of bloat or extraneous things that are put there just to make it larger and larger and larger."

Handrahan went on to say he believes "brevity should be more of a virtue in gaming," adding that "something can be better by being shorter."

Monster Hunter Wilds Patch Notes: Bowgun And Hammer Buffs, More Tempered Hunts

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 01:54

Patch notes for Monster Hunter Wilds' latest update are here, and some of the game's least popular weapons are getting some welcome buffs.

Update 1.011.00 will arrive May 27 at 5:30 PM PT for all platforms, clocking in at 9 GB for PlayStation 5 players, 4 GB for Xbox Series X|S players, and 5 GB for those on Steam. While the star of the update is the previously announced Street Fighter 6 collaboration (which includes Akuma as an NPC, special quests, and new cosmetics), the patch also includes a number of balance changes to weapons.

Most notably, both the Light and Heavy Bowguns are receiving some substantial buffs, as are the Hammer and Hunting Horn. For the bowguns, various ammo types are seeing a damage increase, as well as an increase to the number of hits when using Dragon Ammo. There are other smaller adjustments too, with the only nerf to come out of the Bowgun changes being a decrease to Elemental Ammo damage.

After Being Paused By EA, The WRC Racing Game Series Will Live On

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 01:52

Nacon has reacquired the rights to publish games based on the FIA World Rally Championship, also known as WRC, following EA and Codemasters' decision to pause development on WRC racing games.

Previously known as Bigben Interactive, Nacon actually held the publishing rights to WRC games between 2013 and 2022, releasing a new WRC game almost every year over the course of that decade. Following the release of 2022's WRC Generations, EA obtained the rights to the WRC license and granted them to Codemasters, a racing game developer that EA had acquired years prior. EA and Codemasters went on to release EA Sports WRC in 2023. In April, EA and Codemasters announced that they would no longer develop WRC video games, resulting in several Codemasters developers being laid off.

In the wake of that announcement, Nacon decided to reobtain the development and publishing rights for WRC. It now holds the exclusive PC and console game and esports rights for WRC from 2027 to 2032. A press release confirms that Nacon will create "an all-new WRC game series, aiming to deliver an immersive experience that faithfully reflects the reality of the championship and meets the expectations of both rally enthusiasts and new players."

This Exhilarating RTS Was Abruptly Canceled By Its Developers Before Release

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 01:50

Uncapped Games has announced that it is ceasing development on Battle Aces, a fast-paced real-time strategy (RTS) spearheaded by a former StarCraft 2 developer.

This decision was announced on Battle Aces' website. The only real reasoning Uncapped Games provided for the cancellation was that "the returns from early testing were not strong enough to support continued development." In the announcement, Uncapped Games went on to thank the community. "We’ll always be proud of what we built, and the community that formed around Battle Aces," the studio's statement explains. "While the game’s journey ends here, the connections, ideas, and memories we have shared will remain with us forever."

Battle Aces was first announced at Summer Game Fest 2024 by Uncapped Games, a subsidiary of the Tencent-owned LightSpeed Studios. Its game director was David Kim, a designer who worked on StarCraft 2 at Blizzard Entertainment, and wanted to make an RTS that stripped back much of the complexity and unit micromanagement common in the genre. Battle Aces matches were short, as players could quickly spawn units and issue simple commands to outflank their enemy and ultimately destroy their base.

Want A Crash Bandicoot Movie? Ask Xbox, The Last Of Us Boss Says

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 01:46

The Last of Us boss Neil Druckmann has spoken up to say he would sign a petition to make a Crash Bandicoot movie, but that's all he can do since his company, Naughty Dog, does not own the franchise. While Naughty Dog created the Crash series, which debuted in 1996, the series is now owned by Microsoft following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Druckmann told Indie Wire that Naughty Dog never owned the Crash series, and any possible Crash movie would need Microsoft's approval. "I will direct your question to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. Ask him to make a Crash Bandicoot film," he said. "Look, I'll sign that petition. I'm in full support."

There has never been a Crash movie, but given the surge in popularity of video game properties these days in Hollywood, some are speculating that it could happen. That remains to be seen, but Spencer himself has said it wants to make more TV shows and movies based on its stable of franchises.

Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake Gives The Classics A Deserved Glow-Up

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 01:20

Dragon Quest has not been as ubiquitous as Final Fantasy in recent years, but the two series are intertwined in the history of defining and formalizing Japanese RPGs. And just as the Pixel Remaster remakes of Final Fantasy have given players a fresh and modernized way to reexperience history, Dragon Quest is aiming to give players a dose of history with the Erdrick Trilogy--the first three Dragon Quest games, remastered across two packages. Dragon Quest 3 was a treat, and now DQ1+2 will round out the set with Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake. Despite my affection for retro RPGs, early Dragon Quest is a relative blind spot for me, and after a little hands-on time I'm eager to play each of them to completion.

For starters, the games are a stunning marriage of classic pixel art and modern touches. I hadn't realized how much better Square Enix's "HD-2D" aesthetic had become in recent years. My impression from the Octopath Traveler games and the tactics game Triangle Strategy was still that HD-2D tends to be fairly muted and muddy. As much as I enjoyed those games, the art style didn't wow me. Dragon Quest 1+2, on the other hand, applies the structure of HD-2D to a much more vibrant world. The color palette and saturation feels reminiscent of 8-bit classics, which makes the beautiful sprite artwork pop.

This package includes both the first and second Dragon Quest games, which are rudimentary by today's standards, but that's also what makes them so endearing. The very first Dragon Quest game was a very early blueprint for the series, featuring just one hero character taking on the legions of slimes and monsters to overcome evil. The second game is a bit more reminiscent of early Final Fantasy games, with party members that come and go as the story demands. Even then, though, the options were set by default to give you direct control over the main hero and let the other party members move autonomously.

Take-Two, EA Warn Of "Reputational" Risks Involving AI

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 00:54

Many major game companies are using artificial intelligence for game development and other initiatives, and now EA and Take-Two have issued warnings to investors about reputational risks.

Bloomberg noticed that the latest 10K filings from both companies included disclaimers about AI risks. EA's filing, for example, mentions that the company is integrating AI "tools and technologies" into its development and business processes, noting that doing so "might present social and ethical issues."

If EA fails to manage these issues appropriately, it could lead to "legal and reputational harm," and for consumers to "lose confidence in our business and brands."
