PowerWash Simulator 2 Review - Working Overtime

Games Reviews - Thu, 10/23/2025 - 01:00

Zen Buddhist monk and personal hero of mine, Thich Nhat Hanh, spent much of his life writing about mindfulness. He stressed that when we do anything, we should commit to it fully, giving it our undivided attention and allowing ourselves to become immersed in it, be it simply eating, walking, or anything else. "Drink your tea slowly and reverently," he said, "as if it is the axis on which the earth revolves--slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future."

Like its predecessor, PowerWash Simulator 2 is a stage on which one can play out Thich Nhat Hanh's message. The simple pleasures of washing away the grime from dozens of walls, floors, cars, and couches act like an on-ramp to a flow state. For a while, I let the sequel wash over me, giving it my entire being and enjoying it thoroughly. But long before I sprayed away the last patch of mildew, I was back to my old ways, multitasking my way through a game that asks of me more patience and attention than I was willing to give it.

PowerWash Simulator 2 is exactly what it sounds like, though if you haven't played the first game, its title alone may not make it apparent why it can be so much fun. In this first-person job sim from FuturLab, you'll live out a career as a powerwasher, taking on nearly 40 jobs in solo play, split-screen, or online multiplayer with other soapy experts. You'll begin with a few simple tools--hoses with different nozzles that provide a range of spraying intensities and patterns, almost like an arsenal of guns in a traditional shooter. In essence, this is a shooter, but rather than zombies or Nazis, your targets are buildings, furnishings, and vehicles absolutely blanketed in filth, with each mission ending when you've completely cleansed the area of its grime.

Remedy CEO Steps Down After FBC: Firebreak Comes Up Short

Game News - Thu, 10/23/2025 - 00:54

Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that CEO Tero Virtala has stepped down, effective immediately. The announcement came just days after Remedy confirmed that the studio's latest release, FBC: Firebreak, had "weak" sales and that the company would incur a profit hit.

Virtala was Remedy's CEO since 2016. A search is now underway for a new CEO, Remedy said, and for the time bing, Virtala will "continue at the service of the company" as part of the handover process.

Remedy co-founder Markus Mäki is taking over as interim CEO. He is vacating his position as chairman of the board and will be replaced in that position by Henri Österlund.

Starfield Designer Says Game Fell Short Of Fallout And Elder Scrolls, Calls Space "Inherently Boring"

Game News - Thu, 10/23/2025 - 00:21

A former Bethesda designer has some theories on why Starfield didn't take off the same way the company's other marquee RPG franchises did.

Speaking to FRVR, developer Bruce Nesmith, who worked as a systems designer for Starfield before leaving Bethesda in 2021, complimented the space-set RPG, while opining that it didn't reach the same heights as The Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

"I think it’s a good game," Nesmith said. "I don’t think it’s in the same calibre as the other two, you know, Fallout or Skyrim, or Elder Scrolls rather, but I think it’s a good game." Nesmith added that he remains proud of the work that he and his former colleagues contributed to the game.

Devs Who Don't Embrace AI Are Selling Themselves Short, Ex-God Of War Dev Says

Game News - Wed, 10/22/2025 - 23:47

A veteran high-ranking game developer has sounded off on the use of artificial intelligence systems in gaming, saying developers who fail to adopt the technology run the risk of selling themselves short. Speaking to IGN, former Sony Santa Monica director of product development Meghan Morgan Juinio said AI is a "tool" and "something that will augment" human creators, not replace them.

"At least for right now, that's how I see it. It's going to evolve whether you're on board with it or not, so I want to be at the forefront of helping to guide how that goes and how we use it," Juinio said.

She added: "I think if we don't embrace it, I think we're selling ourselves short."

Former PlayStation Boss Says PS6 Can't Rely On Power And Graphics Alone

Game News - Wed, 10/22/2025 - 23:43

With the PS5 turning five years old in November, discussion about its successor has begun to intensify. Sony and AMD recently spoke about new technological breakthroughs that it was pioneering, and former SIE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has shared his thoughts on the rumored PS6 and how Sony needs to do more than just chase graphics for its next-generation console.

Speaking on the Friends Per Second podcast, Yoshida explained how the graphical capabilities of current-gen hardware were starting to hit a wall and that the company needs to start thinking beyond pure graphical power to attract a wide audience. "PlayStation--in my mind--they can't do the same thing they have been doing, increasing the graphics power and providing the high-end experiences," Yoshida said. "They might just do that, but still, that feels like a niche audience right now."

While Yoshida doesn't know what he'd do to make the PS6 stand out if he were still at PlayStation, he did stress that he was confident that the current leadership of the company--led by CEO Hideaki Nishino--is capable of bringing something "disruptive" to the industry, thanks to them being relatively young in comparison to the previous management generation.

New PS5 Update Is Out Now, Does Something Unexpected

Game News - Wed, 10/22/2025 - 23:09

PS5 console owners can grab a fresh firmware update for the console--Version: 25.07-12.20.00--and alongside the usual stability upgrades, there are also a few other tweaks being made to the hardware. Anyone who wants to check the serial number of their console and DualSense controller can now do so, as Sony says the update adds this option.

Beyond that, stability improvements have also been made to the DualSense Edge wireless controller, messages and usability on some screens have been enhanced, and system performance has also been brushed up. Here's a closer look at the brief update notes from Sony:

PS5 Version: 25.07-12.20.00 update notes
  • You can now use your console to check the serial number of your console, and of DualSense wireless controllers that are currently connected by USB or Bluetooth
    • For your console, select Settings > System > System Software > Console Information, and then check Serial Number
    • For a DualSense wireless controller, select Settings > Accessories > General > Advanced Settings > View Serial Number
  • We've updated the device software of the DualSense Edge wireless controller to improve stability
  • We've improved the messages and usability on some screens
  • We've improved system software performance and stability

This is the second console firmware update this month, as a quick stability upgrade was introduced at the start of October. In general, 2025 has been light on big changes to the PS5, with the only notable updates being the return of the classic PlayStation console user interfaces and big changes to activity settings between incremental tweaks to the console.
