Yakuza 0 Director's Cut Is a Punchy (But Pricey) Upgrade For Diehard Fans and Newcomers

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 04:02

It's more or less agreed that Yakuza 0 is really good--many will even say the best in the whole series. But with the Switch 2's launch lineup being somewhat sparse, Sega (and Nintendo, which has timed exclusivity on this edition) are likely hoping players want to complement their Mario Karting, Cyberpunk 2077ing, and Street Fighting with a hard-hitting open-world adventure. But is it worth it? It really depends.

At $50, Yakuza 0 Director's Cut is cheaper than many of the other Switch 2 launch games, and there's a lot to do here between the lengthy, dual-protagonist narrative and the surprisingly involving minigames. You can easily get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, and that's not even taking into account the new content.

The first major difference is the addition of new voice and subtitle tracks. Your choice of voice actors is down to personal preference, but for me, the Japanese ones are too iconic to switch away from. Chinese and English voice tracks have been recorded for the entire game. If you're a series veteran, you'll also notice that the demo cinematic features the Japanese rock song "Bubble" by Shounan no Kaze--a song featured in the original Yakuza 0's Japanese release but excised overseas. It's back, it's rockin', and it sets the stage for a grand old time in 1988 Bubble Era Japan.

Hitman Dev Gives Update On Mysterious Fantasy Project

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 03:44

IO Interactive has teased more than their upcoming James Bond game in a recent GameSpot interview. Studio CEO Hakan Abrak briefly mentioned that their sixth original IP is currently a previously confirmed fantasy project.

"The passion and being able to pour some of yourself into this is extremely important for us creatively," Abrak said on GameSpot's Summer Games Fest livestream. "IO has done--we've really been blessed--five original IPs from the ground up, throughout the years. We're doing our sixth which is a fantasy project."

007: First Light is IO Interactive's first licensed game. Abrak said that the only reason they took the project on is that their partners gave them "freedom" to express themselves within the game.

Xbox Handheld Device "Essentially Canceled" - Report

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 03:24

Though Microsoft never announced an official Xbox handheld device, there were rumors about how such a device might factor into the company's next-gen console plans. Those plans are continuing to evolve, it seems, as a new report said Microsoft's own Xbox handheld is "essentially canceled."

A report from The Verge, citing insiders, said such a device is no longer going forward. This follows on from a report at the end of May that suggested plans for an Xbox handheld were sidelined.

The Verge's report added that Microsoft remains bullish on the idea of making "next-gen Xbox hardware," but perhaps not in the way people think. "We'll see multiple devices from PC makers like Asus that will also be considered next-gen Xbox consoles," the report said.

The Outer Worlds 2 Feels Like More Of The Same, And That's Okay

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 03:15

The Outer Worlds 2 is one of three games coming from Obsidian Entertainment in 2025, two of which are RPGs. Unlike the high fantasy Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2 is a sci-fi adventure, and the way that it leans into the genre by allowing (and encouraging) players to have their characters take on Flaws is an interesting way of differentiating the experience from the troubled chosen one energy often assigned to fantasy heroes, like the protagonist of Avowed.

Unfortunately, exploring these Flaws was not the focus of the 40-minute demo I played at Summer Game Fest. Instead, the demo focused on combat. I don't jump into games like The Outer Worlds 2 for the shooting, so, admittedly, I did not walk away from the preview all that impressed. That's not a knock against the game--the combat is serviceable--but it was disappointing to play a segment of The Outer Worlds 2 that felt like it was just the first game revisited without a chance to experience any of the new stuff.

So far, from what I've played, if you liked The Outer Worlds, then you'll like the sequel. If you weren't a fan, the demo I played did not convince me that The Outer Worlds 2 will be for you. More of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing, though--The Outer Worlds is superb. The gameplay doesn't need to change all that much--The Outer Worlds 2 can just be a Marvel's Spider-Man 2 kind of sequel, where it's just more of the same that came before because what came before was very good.

This $20 Nintendo Switch 2 Accessory Unlocks PS5 And Xbox Controller Support

The Nintendo Switch 2 now supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers--as in the first-party Xbox Wireless Controller and PS5 DualSense. Nintendo's new console doesn't have "official" compatibility with controllers designed for competing platforms, of course, but you can wirelessly sync those controllers and others to your Switch 2 with a $20 adapter made by 8BitDo.

The 8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter 2, one of the most useful accessories for the original Switch, now supports Switch 2. The adapter was part of a small group of 8BitDo accessories that received firmware updates shortly after the Switch 2's launch. 8BitDo also added Switch 2 support to its flagship Ultimate 2 Controllers, the retro-inspired Pro 2 Controller, and a few others. Here's a list of 8BitDo products that now work on Switch 2. Check out our 8BitDo controller roundup for more details on each controller, and read on for a look at the handy adapter.

Lumines Arise Is Shaping Up To Be Another Visually Spectacular Hit From The Tetris Effect Team

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 02:17

After playing 20 minutes of Lumines Arise, the team from Enhance presented me with a difficult decision. "We have another 20 or so minutes left. Do you want to spend the rest of your time asking us some questions, or would you like to play a bit more?" And as much as I wanted to jump straight into interviews and pick the minds of the folks who brought us Humanity, Tetris Effect, and Rez Infinite, I found myself betrayed by my own childlike glee.

"Would you mind if I do just a couple more levels?" I asked.

It was in that moment--when the part of me that simply loves games overtook the part of me that tries her hardest to maintain a writer's sensibilities--that I realized I really enjoyed my time with Lumines Arise. And though of course I took time to chat with game and art director Takashi Ishihara and creative producer Mark MacDonald and enjoyed every minute of it, I left the preview event wishing that somehow the next entry in the Lumines series was back at my hotel, loaded up on my Steam Deck, and waiting for me to get back to playing it.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Took 20 Years To Make Because Capcom Was Too Busy

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 02:10

A new Onimusha game took so long to release because Capcom was busy with other projects, Way of the Sword's producer explained.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to come out in 2026, placing its launch 20 years after the last brand-new console game in the series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. While the series' revival is exciting, we had to ask Capcom why it took so long to make a new Onimusha while the company more actively supported other marquee franchises like Resident Evil. During an interview with GameSpot at Summer Game Fest Play Days, producer Akihito Kadowaki cites how busy Capcom has been with why there has been such a big gap between the release of new Onimusha titles.

"There [were] actually a lot of people within Capcom who wanted to make a new Onimusha title. However, as you probably know, Capcom makes a lot of titles every year and it requires a lot of manpower to do that. So, unfortunately, the timing didn't work out because getting the right people and also the right amount of people to create the game just never worked out because we had other titles we needed to work on as well."

Postal 2 Redux Is Coming To Modern Consoles And PC

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 01:48

It's been almost a decade since the original Postal was given a modern remake in Postal Redux. Now, it's time for 2003's Postal 2 to get the same treatment with Postal 2 Redux, "a ground‐up overhaul" of the original game.

Postal 2 Redux is in development with Flat2VR Studios, Team Beef, and Running With Scissors, with a Kickstarter campaign slated to begin later this summer. According to the announcement, the revitalized game grew out of an initial attempt to bring Postal 2 to VR. Now, the original assets will be recreated in Unity with "enhanced visuals, new weapons, nastier physics, and enough Easter eggs to back‐up the porcelain at Uncle Dave’s Compound."

While the announcement teaser doesn't have much to show off, some of the features planned for Portal 2 Redux include the ability to pet Champ the dog, as well as the addition of dynamic lighting, more refined crowds, fully breakable interiors, and an open world that can be explored without any loading screens.

Way Of The Sword Is Not Connected To Previous Onimusha Games Or The Netflix Series

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 01:27

The narrative of Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not connected to previous Onimusha games or the Onimusha Netflix show, Capcom has confirmed.

"This is a completely different world from the previous games," producer Akihito Kadowaki confirmed to GameSpot during an interview at Summer Game Fest Play Days. "The main reason we wanted to do that is we wanted not only the fans of the series, but also new players, to start at the same place with the story. Everyone can experience the same thing at the same time."

Up until now, all mainline Onimusha games have been connected narratively since Onimusha: Warlords kicked things off in 2001, often having their protagonists fighting demonic Genma and a possessed Oda Nobunaga's forces. Capcom even went through the effort of remastering the first two games in the series in the 2020s, so it could be believable that it was prepping players to understand the series' overarching narrative and lore prior to its continuation. That's not the case, though, as the only real connection is that players are still fighting Genma and Kadowaki admitted that Way of the Sword's development was separate from those remaster efforts.

Save On Gaming Chairs With These Father's Day Sales

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 01:16

Amazon is currently offering discounts on select gaming chairs, including a few models with high-end features like built-in speakers, footrests, and additional lumbar support. Inventory is limited, and because some models are on sale at their lowest prices ever, they’re bound to sell out fast. Unfortunately, these chairs won’t ship in time for Father’s Day, but if you’re shopping for yourself (or someone patient), now is a great time to scoop up a budget gaming chair at a great low price.

GTRacing Gaming Chair with Footrest (Ocean Blue) $100 (was $180)

This is the best price ever for the GTRacing Gaming Chair with Footrest. The discount only applies to the Ocean Blue version. It features a black and blue design with PU leather upholstery, a footrest, and pillows for added neck and lumbar support. Other notable features include a wide base with extra seat cushioning, a reclining backrest that can lean back up to 160 degrees, nylon wheel casters, and 3D armrests.

The GTRacing Gaming Chair with Speakers is also discounted. You’ll pay a bit more at $150 (was $200), but it’s a nice alternative that packs in most of the same features as the model with the footrest, and adds a pair of Bluetooth speakers that get around 6 hours of playback on a charge. It swaps out the blue and black color scheme for one that’s largely black, plus a few red accents.

See at Amazon GTRacing Gaming Office Chair (Black) $160 (was $260)

This model features an unorthodox design that blurs the lines between furniture and a gaming chair, making it a good choice for a home office that doubles as a game room. Its flared backrest with high-density foam padding disperses pressure from your back and shoulders. It also features a retractable footrest, and the backrest can recline up to 135 degrees.

See at Amazon GTPlayer Gaming Chair (Black) $117 (was $190)

If you prefer fabric chairs over leather, check out this GTPlayer Gaming Chair. Crafted with a soft cloth material that helps airflow and disperses heat, it’s a nice alternative to the many leather chairs on the market. This black edition also features grey accents along the edges and a stitched backrest that appears more premium than its price would suggest. Beyond that, you’re getting many of the standard gaming chair features--including a 165-degree reclining angle, a wide seat, and a weight capacity up to 300 pounds. Note that this model is discontinued, so this may be the last chance to grab it before it sells out.

See at Amazon Playseat Puma Active Gaming Chair $60 (was $170)

The Puma Active Gaming Chair is more like a rocker than a desk chair, making it better suited for console gaming. You can lounge back in the seat or sit upright, but it’s too small for a typical PC gaming desk setup. Instead, you can toss it on the floor next to your big-screen TV. Featuring pockets for your accessories and a rocking base with rubber grips for added stability, it’s a pretty cool choice at this new low price. This deal is available through the Amazon-owned retailer Woot, which offers Prime members free standard shipping.

E-Win Racing is also offering discounts on select gaming chairs, including 22% off on select models when you use our exclusive promo code GAMESPOT at the E-Win online store. The Game That Made Everyone Cry At Summer Game Fest 2025

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 01:00

There were all kinds of games on display at Summer Game Fest 2025: scary games, thrilling games, funny games, but only one game was making everyone cry. I played a demo of the game alongside the developers, and I won't pretend otherwise: It messed me up, too. The incredibly moving experience came from my time with Out of Words, the debut from the creative team of Kong Orange and WiredFly. In speaking with the team, I was moved by their emotional maturity and thoughtfulness. Out of Words is an adorable co-op puzzle-platformer, but more than that, it's an exercise in heart-on-your-sleeve vulnerability.

"I am a bit of a romantic," game director Johan Oettinger told me, describing the relationship between the game's playable characters, Karla and Kurt. Typically, "they can talk about anything. But they find themselves in a moment in their relationship with something new in the air." But sadly, Oettinger added, "they can't find the words" to say how they feel. Out of Words is a coming-of-age love story about the things we want to say but don't know how.

Something is in the way of them being honest with each other, and that premise, combined with Oettinger's soft-spoken way of speaking about this game he clearly loves so much, was already getting me pretty misty before I even played. It was like I'd walked into a poetry reading where, by chance, a demo of a gorgeous, stop-motion animated video game was also taking place.

Outer Worlds 2 Director Reacts To $80 Price, Says Take It Up With Microsoft

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 00:54

The Outer Worlds 2's game director has reacted to Microsoft's decision to price the RPG at $80. Brandon Adler said in an interview that Obsidian did not set the price for the game, adding that anyone bothered by the price point should take their concerns to Microsoft.

"We're a game developer. We love to make games. We don't set the prices for our games," he said in an interview with GamesRadar. "Like, personally, as a game developer, I wish everybody could play my game, because that's what I want out of this whole thing. But for the reasons and so like, why the $79.99 price point, you'd have to honestly talk to the Xbox folks."

The Outer Worlds 2 is Microsoft's first $80 game, but it wasn't a total surprise, given that Microsoft had said it would begin charging $80 for some games in 2025. Microsoft also raised prices on Xbox consoles.

Metal Gear Solid Delta Is Bringing Back The Gloriously Goofy Secret Theater From Snake Eater

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 00:41

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater looks like it'll be a faithful remake of Snake Eater, but it won't be all gloom and doom in this Cold War-era tale of espionage and betrayal. During the Konami Press Start showcase, the company announced that a goofier side of Metal Gear Solid will return, as the Secret Theater bonus feature will be included in the upcoming game. Not only will it feature all of the classic cutscenes from Snake Eater, but several new ones have been created for it as well.

If you're unfamiliar with it, Secret Theater was originally an unlockable extra in Snake Eater that reimagined the endings to several cutscenes. These ranged from Snake causing a time paradox to legendary sniper The End falling in love with Eva, and the videos were originally only made for the eyes of Snake Eater's production team.

These short clips were eventually placed on the official Snake Eater website, and several more were created thanks to them being popular with fans. The original videos will be found as collectibles inside the game, and for the new Secret Theater videos, players will have to track down enemy soldiers carrying rolls of film on their uniforms.

MindsEye Dev Outlines What It's Doing To Try To Fix The Game

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 00:38

MindsEye, the new action game from former Rockstar veteran Leslie Benzies' new studio, launched this week but left a lot to be desired due to technical and performance issues. Now, developer Build a Rocket Boy has outlined what it's doing to try to improve the experience.

In a statement, the developer thanked fans for their support and feedback thus far, but added that the studio is "heartbroken that not every player was able to experience the game as we intended."

"Our priority is optimizing performance and stability so that every player, across every device, can enjoy an equally high-quality experience," the studio said. "Our teams have worked tirelessly throughout the night to solve many of these issues, and we have now identified that the vast majority of crashes were caused by a memory leak."

Silent Hill Remake To Be Developed By Bloober Team, Konami Announces

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 00:08

A new Silent Hill game is in development, as Konami has announced that the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober Team, will be remaking the very first game in the series. The reveal came at the end of the Konami Press Start Live showcase, as a short video was played and featured background music from the game. In a press release, Konami confirmed that it is the 1999 game being remade, and on social media, the company referenced an infamous quote from the game:

The Fear Of Blood Tends To Create Fear For The Flesh...#SILENTHILL pic.twitter.com/6XTn1xyXbV

— KONAMI UK (@KONAMIUK) June 12, 2025

The original Silent Hill gave fans of survival-horror an alternative to Capcom's Resident Evil games. While it featured similar survival-horror themes, Silent Hill's deep focus on psychological terror made it stand out, and its sequel is still highly regarded as one of the best games of all time.

The franchise has made a big return, as in addition to Bloober Team's critically acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2, a brand-new game in the series will launch in September. Silent Hill F marks a big departure from previous games, as it shifts from the titular town of Silent Hill to Japan. The game will also focus heavily on Japanese horror, as it combines grotesque creatures pulled from local folklore with beautiful imagery.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's Fox Hunt Brings Back Online Multiplayer

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 00:04

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater recently debuted a new trailer that teased the return of Metal Gear Online. During today's Konami Direct Showcase, the new online multiplayer mode was officially announced as Fox Hunt. However, it won't simply be a rehash of MGO.

During Konami's presentation, Fox Hunt director Yu Sahara described it as "camouflage and hide-and-go-seek to the next level," before adding that players will have the choice of remaining hidden with their advanced camo or attempting to find their own hidden foes. He added that it shares the same world as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, but the gameplay will be "completely different."

Metal Gear Online was originally released in 2008 alongside Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. While Sahara acknowledged the similarities between Fox Hunt and MGO, he added that the former "will be its own new type of mode" because the online landscape has drastically changed since changed since MGO in Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Solid V.

Blumhouse Games Wants To Make Its Horror Lineup As Diverse As Its Movies

Game News - Fri, 06/13/2025 - 00:00

Last year, the horror film titans at Blumhouse announced a video games label and brought its first game as a publisher, Fear The Spotlight, to Summer Game Fest. I eventually reviewed that one and found it to be a worthy entry-level horror game. It was creepy, but not overly scary, and made for a reasonable gateway into the genre for younger or less experienced players. At Summer Game Fest 2025, Blumhouse showed off two more games that, while perhaps not specifically for beginners, do well to express Blumhouse Games' publishing vision.

Grave Seasons and Crisol: Theater of Idols are each horror games, but couldn't be more different otherwise. The former is 2D, the latter is 3D. Grave Seasons is presented in third-person, while Crisol is played in first-person. Grave Seasons is also a dark twist on farming sims, whereas Crisol blends elements of recent Resident Evil games with BioShock, all set in a world inspired by Spanish art and folklore. Blumhouse brought these two games to Summer Game Fest 2025, giving me a preview of what's to come from a publisher that is technically still in its infancy, but also carries the name recognition and reputation of one of modern horror's biggest brands.

In the movie world, it feels like one out of every two horror films displays Blumhouse's logo in their opening moments. While I'm sure that's not literally true, it's certainly the case that the production company has its hands in all kinds of horror productions, from major series like The Conjuring and Paranormal Activity to legendary one-offs like Get Out and 2020's remake of The Invisible Man. The prospect of the company getting into horror video games is an exciting one for me, as I hope the publisher can use a keen eye to lift notable projects out of obscurity.

Pragmata Hands-On: Juggling Gunplay And Puzzles Gets Surprisingly Tense

Game News - Thu, 06/12/2025 - 23:59

Pragmata feels like an instance of parallel thinking with Helldivers 2. Last year's hit multiplayer game was lauded for lots of reasons, but not least because of its strategems mechanic--demanding you input a complex series of button presses in the heat of combat. Pragmata, the third-person single-player shooter from Capcom, probably wasn't directly inspired by that game, but they represent similar approaches. Central to Pragmata's combat is the ability to hack your robotic opponents to make them vulnerable to attack, which in practice means frantically inputting buttons while androids bear down on you. It's a neat hook, and one that feels distinct from Helldivers' take thanks to its own puzzle format.

Hacking requires navigating across a square grid--at least, every one I saw was square--with the controller's face buttons representing the cardinal directions to move toward the goal. So if your starting point is in the top-left corner of a 3x3 grid, and the goal node is center-right, you could hit X, Circle, Circle to reach the goal and take down the enemy defenses, after which they're vulnerable to attack. The puzzle interface pops up next to enemies automatically when you aim down sights, so you're still moving and even able to shoot while solving the puzzle, requiring some tense mental juggling.

But the hacking puzzles are further complicated by special nodes--power-ups that stack if you pass through them, and blocks that you need to navigate around. The puzzles are also another way to differentiate the difficulty of enemies. Small buzzing flyers had the 3x3 grid, while larger humanoid walkers had 4x4 grids. I would imagine even larger enemies or bosses could expand the grid size even more.
