Original Blair Witch Project Cast Wants 'Retroactive Residuals' And More From Lionsgate

Tue, 04/23/2024 - 00:36

In 1999, The Blair Witch Project became an instant horror sensation and innovated the new film genre of "found footage" and became one of the year's biggest movies. The film launched a multi-media franchise with sequels, comics, and video games, but not so much the careers of the original cast.

Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams have come together with a public proposal to Lionsgate after the studio recently announced a partnership with Blumhouse to reboot the series. The trio wrote in a statement that they're asking Lionsgate for retroactive and future residual payments, "meaningful consultation" on any future Blair Witch projects, and an annual $60,000 grant for "an unknown/aspiring genre filmmaker to assist in making their first feature film."

They continued with how both reboots of the film failed to capture the original suspense. "Neither of these films were made with significant creative input from the original team. As the insiders who created the Blair Witch and have been listening to what fans love and want for 25 years, we're your single greatest, yet thus far unutilized secret weapon!"

Fallout 76 Is More Popular Than Ever On Steam, Thanks To The TV Show

Tue, 04/23/2024 - 00:06

The wasteland in Fallout 76 is more alive than it's ever been on Steam, as the online RPG hit a new peak concurrent player count on Sunday, April 21. The title saw 73,368 people at once, according to SteamDB, on Valve's service alone--which doesn't even account for others on PlayStation and Xbox systems, as well as Game Pass on all platforms.

This milestone comes just a week after Fallout 76 set a previous record of 39,455 players on Steam. So this new mark shows a notable increase in numbers, with the online RPG gaining players basically everyday since the Amazon Prime Video series Fallout debuted April 10. It's not the only game in the post-apocalyptic series that's experienced a boost, either. Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas have benefitted from the TV show, too. In Europe, four Fallout games entered the Top 10 charts recently after the show's premiere.

Fallout 76 was also free for a week earlier this month, helping the online RPG's engagement numbers. That promo is now over, though the title is still heavily discounted on store fronts. In addition, Fallout 76 has received Fallout TV show content. For example, everyone who jumps into the game until May 7 will earn a Vault 33 jumpsuit, like the one Lucy wears in the Prime Video series.

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 23:47

For years, many have wondered if Seth MacFarlane might ever produce another Family Guy movie, one that could potentially get a theatrical release. (For context, a straight-to-DVD Family Guy movie was released in 2005). We still don't know if that will happen, but MacFarlane has now said he has the film figured out.

Appearing at PaleyFest, the series creator said he's know what he wants to do with the next Family Guy movie for many years now--he just needs time to make it.

"I have known what that movie will be for the past 15 years and I just haven't had the time to get to it, but I do know what it will be," MacFarlane said, as reported by TheWrap.

The Deadpool And Wolverine Trailer Has Arrived And It's Filthy

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 23:25

A new Deadpool and Wolverine trailer has gone live, and within the first minute, it drops plenty of F-bombs and at least one scene of genital mutilation. Good thing the main cast happens to have the ability to heal from almost any physical injury.

The other big reveal in this trailer is that Deadpool and Wolverine will have their work cut out for them when they encounter one of the most dangerous X-Men villains of all time, Cassandra Nova, who is played by Emma Corrin in the film.

In addition to that, there's a brief tease of the origins of this Wolverine, who reportedly hails from an alternate reality where he failed to save the day. Beyond that, the trailer has plenty of salty language--Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige would approve--explosions, and an inside joke regarding Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld's infamous struggle to draw a certain piece of human anatomy.

Embracer Group Splits Up Into Three New Companies

Mon, 04/22/2024 - 22:42

Embracer Group has announced plans to split itself into three unique game companies: Asmodee, Coffee Stain and Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises and Friends. Each entity will exist as a separate and publicly listed company on the Nasdaq Stockholm.

Asmodee, which has a rich portfolio of over 300 IPs, will function as a tabletop games publisher. The company has several licensed tabletop games in development based on properties like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and more, and has released highly successful games like Exploding Kittens and Catan. It's worth noting that Embracer Group has--through Asmodee--entered into a new financing agreement with several banks as part of its plans to "repay existing debt and reduce leverage" in the remaining Embracer Group. As part of the arrangement, Asmodee has been valued at $958 million.

Coffee Stain and Friends will "better showcase its high-margin profile and strong cash flow," according to Embracer and it is comprised of Coffee Stain, Ghost Ship, Tarsier, Tuxedo Labs, Amplifier Game Invest, and publisher THQ Nordic. This company will have more than 200 IPs in its portfolio, including Deep Rock Galactic, Goat Simulator, Satisfactory, Wreckfest, Teardown, and Valheim, which it partly owns. There's also the free-to-play side of the company, with games like Cryptic and published titles based on popular IPs like Star Trek Online.

House Of The Dragon Cast Takes Sides In New Video

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 09:08

House of the Dragon Season 2 is still a few months away, but the unfolding Targaryen civil war for control of the seven kingdoms of Westeros has already begun. There can only one king or queen on the Iron Throne. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) is the rightful heir, and her followers are known as the Blacks. However, Rhaenyra's half-brother, King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) is the usurper who sits on the throne with his followers, the Greens, behind him. And now, in HBO's new featurette, the House of the Dragon cast is declaring for either Team Black or Team Green.

"We have madness on our side," explains D'Arcy. "And we have a powerful naval presence, thanks to the Velaryon fleet." Olivia Cooke, who plays Rhaenyra's former friend-turned-rival, Alicent Hightower, had a succinct reply to D'Arcy's declaration: "We have bigger dragons."

Unsurprisingly, almost all of the cast members sided with the team aligned with their characters. The only actor who displayed any ambiguity was Fabien Frankel, who plays Rhaenyra's former protector, Ser Criston Col, who shifted his allegiance to Alicent years ago.

LittleBigPlanet 3 Servers Are Down Indefinitely, Online Player Creation Access Unavailable

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 06:27

Sony has revealed that it has shut down the online servers for LittleBigPlanet 3 indefinitely on PlayStation 4. They were temporarily taken offline back in January due to a number of reported issues.

On Sony's support page for decommissioned servers, Sony said that this decision was due to ongoing technical problems. As a result, all online services, including access to other players' creations for LittleBigPlanet 3, are no longer available.

User generated content stored locally on your PS4 and offline features such as the campaign will still be accessible. The servers for the PS3 version of LittleBigPlanet 3 were taken offline permanently in 2021 because of DDOS attacks. However, the PS4 servers remained online, but now that's not the case.

Diablo TV Show Is A Great Idea, Blizzard Boss Says

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 06:05

Diablo GM Rod Fergusson has said a Diablo TV series could work, in part because its story is one of good versus evil, and that's something many people can relate to and understand.

Speaking to Windows Central, Fergusson said, "Yeah, I definitely think it could work."

He added: "That's one of the things I really liked about Diablo as an IP, is that it's got very relatable themes because it's The High Heavens versus The Burning Hells, and that idea of Good versus Evil. I think that's something that could translate very well to something like that."

Alex Garland's Civil War Is Getting An Amazon-Exclusive 4K Blu-Ray Edition

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 06:01

Alex Garland's Civil War just hit theaters on April 12, but preorders are already open for the 4K UHD version of the film. In fact, two different versions are up for grabs--an Amazon-exclusive version and a standard version, each with unique artwork. We're still waiting for an official release date, but we can't imagine it'll launch for several months.

Preorder Alex Garland's Civil War on 4K Blu-ray $35-$42

The Amazon exclusive version of Civil War includes both a 4K UHD copy and Blu-ray copy, as well as a digital version of the film. Unfortunately, that's everything we know for now, as no details about special features or whether a steelbook is included have been revealed (though it certainly looks like it's packaged in a steelbook). It does, however, come with exclusive cover art depicting a close-up shot of the Statue of Liberty. Expect to learn more in the coming weeks.

If you're not a fan of the cover art on the Amazon-exclusive edition, the Civil War standard edition is also available to preorder. It's actually more expensive at the moment ($42), but it includes the same formats: 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and digital. Its cover art is a sprawling shot of New York Harbor.

Civil War is the latest film from Alex Garland, whose previous work includes Annihilation, Ex Machina, and 28 Days Later. It takes place in a future, dystopian version of America, where civil war has erupted across the nation as four different factions vie for control of the land. Its cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman.

Ready Or Not Developer Confirms It Was Hacked, Source Code Stolen

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 05:56

Void Interactive, the developer behind the tactical first-person shooter game, Ready or Not, has confirmed that it was hacked. Fortunately, no player data or staff data was stolen.

In a statement to Kotaku, the developer blamed the hack on "critical vulnerabilities" that were discovered in TeamCity's cloud services for build management. No sensitive information was leaked and the hackers were only able to get away with "some" source code and screenshots of its upcoming projects.

According to Insider Gaming, the hack reportedly happened in March, prior to the studio publicly revealing it, and the perpetrators made off with 4TB of data. The data was reportedly stolen in March, and apparently contained Ready or Not builds for PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Steelbook Preorders On Sale At Amazon

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 05:50

One of the biggest DC Comics events of all time, Crisis on Infinite Earth, was recently adapted into an animated film. The first part of the multiverse epic was released earlier this year, and preorders for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Two are discounted at Amazon ahead of next week's release. You can pick up either a standard Blu-ray or a 4K version of the film, and both editions come with a digital code so that you can stream the movie on a compatible device. For the 4K UHD release, you'll also get an attractive steelbook case.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2 (Releases April 23)Justice League: Crisis on Infinite EarthsJustice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 1

Adapted from the 1985-1986 comic book mini-series, Crisis on Infinite Earths was a benchmark event for DC Comics and helped popularize blockbuster crossover events, similar to how Marvel Comics saw massive success with its Secret Wars series. The big difference here is that once the dust settled, the DC Universe was effectively rebooted and a new status quo was in place. This idea would be revisited over the years, leading to event comics like Zero Hour and Flashpoint which helped clean up some of the messy continuity of those comic books.

Like the source material, Crisis on Infinite Earths tells the story of the Anti-Monitor unleashing an antimatter wave sweeping across the multiverse and erasing countless realities. Heroes from across the multiverse are recruited to stop the Anti-Monitor and don't be surprised to see hundreds of characters bite the bullet in this finale. In case you missed it, the first act of Crisis on Infinite Earths is now available to order and makes for essential viewing going into the second part.

Furiosa Has A 15-Minute Action Scene That Took 78 Days To Shoot

Sat, 04/20/2024 - 05:38

In 2015, George Miller proved that he was still one of the best action directors in the industry with his jaw-dropping sequel, Mad Max: Fury Road. And in the upcoming prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Miller may even be able to top his work on Fury Road. While speaking to Total Film Magazine, Miller's producing partner Doug Mitchell spoke about an action sequence that required almost 200 stunt men and women working on it daily for nearly three months.

"[Furiosa] has one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot," said Mitchell, who also noted that the scene in question was referred to as "Stairway to Nowhere" on set, and that it's a pivotal scene for the title character, who will be portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy in the film. Additionally, Taylor-Joy shed some light on why the sequence is so important for her character.

"George and I would have these big conversations about why this particular set-piece was so long," said Taylor-Joy. "It's because you see an accumulation of skills over the course of a battle, and that's very important for understanding how resourceful Furiosa is, but also her grit. It's the longest sequence any of us have ever shot. On the day we finished, everybody got a 'Stairway To Nowhere' wine!"

"That anger is tremendous," he told The New York Times. "I don't want to reveal what I'm going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I'm writing it right now. But there's a lot of firepower there and I'm very excited about that decision."

According to a report, Villeneuve will not make Dune 3 as his next film. His next project is currently unknown, but he was also recently linked to a nuclear war movie.

FX's upcoming Alien series has resumed production in Thailand after halting last year during the Hollywood strikes. And now that the show is filming again, Deadline is reporting that Sandra Yi Sencindiver has joined the cast of Alien.
