Monster Hunter Wilds Sees Huge Jump In PC Players After Free Title Update 2
There appears to be renewed enthusiasm for Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam after the recent release of Free Title Update 2. The action-adventure game saw a spike of 100,000 additional concurrent players on Valve's PC platform after the patch earlier this week.
On June 29, the peak concurrent player count for the day on Monster Hunter Wilds was 19,637 people, according to SteamDB. When the game's massive Free Title Update 2 landed June 30, the daily high hit 133,033 players, showing a reinvigorated playbase on PC--the game is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Capcom addressed issues with PC performance as part of the patch, as well as promising further optimizations in the future.
The new update added Lagiacrus, Seregios, and underwater combat to Monster Hunter Wilds. Layered weapons were also introduced, and Capcom noted that the seasonal event called Festival of Accord: Flamefete will take place from July 23 to August 6. Before this, Free Title Update 1 arrived in early April for the game, when it was experiencing peak concurrent players on Steam of over 500,000 people.

Buy now pay later (BNPL) services are becoming more and more popular, and now one BNPL provider has announced a deal with a gaming company to allow people to finance in-game purchases.
Affirm has partnered with gaming commerce company Xsolla to allow people to use Affirm to pay off in-game purchases of $50 or more on payment plans. Affirm offers interest-free biweekly payment plans, or longer-term monthly installments that incur interest.
This will work similarly to how it does already where Affirm is supported. For supported in-game content, players can choose Affirm at checkout, then Affirm will run a credit check, and then players can choose a payment plan that works for them. This is live now in the US and is coming to Canada and the UK soon.

From Software has rolled out a new Elden Ring Nightreign update, which aims to address a number of bugs.
Version 1.01.4 is now available across all platforms and is, once again, a fairly small patch that primarily focuses on resolving a series of bugs that have been disrupting online sessions, instead of balance adjustments, unlike in the previous patch. There's also no word on the promised two-player co-op, which From Software admitted was overlooked in development, but there is a way to enable that with Elden Ring Nightreign mods.
The patch notes confirm that the issue where matchmaking would continuously fail after two players joined and left a team simultaneously has been fixed, meaning no more party resets. The weapon type should also now be displayed in each Armament Information menu, and background music should now play the Recluse Remembrance.

The tough times at Xbox are continuing, as Microsoft is cutting more Xbox staff and reportedly cancelling games. This comes at a time when Microsoft's stock price is soaring and profits are up.
Variety confirmed that Microsoft is cutting less than 4% of its global workforce in this latest move, including staff at Xbox. Microsoft had around 228,000 people by the latest count, so the cuts would be around 9,000 people. "We continue to implement organizational and workforce changes that are necessary to position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace," a Microsoft spokesperson said.
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft's Barcelona-based mobile game developer King is cutting 10% of its staff, which works out to around 200 people at the Candy Crush studio. Cuts at ZeniMax's European offices are coming, too.

The Witcher 4 is still a long way from players getting their hands on it, but CD Projekt Red's team still wants fans to know that the lessons learned in the previous games will be reflected in the sequel. Narrative director Philipp Weber--who was previously the quest director for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt--recently said that The Witcher 4's quests will embrace the example set by its predecessor. Among other things, that means Ciri won't have to worry about meaningless fetch quests.
"We don't do fetch quests," Webber told GamesRadar, before expanding upon the reasons for that decision.
"A quest has to be something interesting," said Weber. "I have to feel, as a player, that if I played that quest, my time was well spent and not just spent. I was busy doing stuff, and didn't think about work or taxes. I experienced a story, or something else that was worth it. That basic rule is still there 100%."

Barely a month after the launch of Switch 2, Nintendo is set to release the console's next big game, Donkey Kong Bananza, in just a few weeks. It's also the first new game in the franchise since 2014's Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Regardless, there's a little too much pent-up excitement for DK's comeback in the new live-action trailer for Donkey Kong Bananza.
YouTube user MikeyOrlando6665 summed it up pretty well in the top comment on the video: "Thank you for telling me this trailer wasn't representative of the gameplay experience. I totally thought I'd have to play DK in front of a large crowd of people chanting DK instead of my usual gameplay experience of sitting alone in my basement in my underwear crying."
Most of the footage features the game's 3D platforming experience, but it also showcases a side-scrolling sequence that serves as a callback to the original Donkey Kong Country from 1994. Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto recently explained why Bananza ditched DK's long-standing Donkey Kong Country design in favor of a more contemporary look.
