Space Marine 2 Dev Apologizes To Players, Says The Game Won't Become A Live-Service Title

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 12:05

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 was a hit out of the gate last fall, but that doesn't mean its most devoted players love everything about it. Many fans are especially vocal against the idea of Space Marines 2 turning into a live-service game, especially after Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive introduced community events seemingly as the only way to get desirable items that are only available for a limited time. This time, the pushback has been so intense that Focus has apologized to fans and assured them that a live-service transformation isn't in the cards for Space Marines 2.

In this week's community update, Focus Entertainment shared the following statement: "We have noted that the Community Events have received cold feedback since we introduced them as an additional way to unlock cosmetic items. We saw that many of you mentioned FOMO generated by the events. Rest assured, we are not looking to transform Space Marine 2 into a full live-service game. The items available through events WILL be available later, for everyone. We want Community Events to be a way to unlock the items in advance, for the most dedicated players, and not to be a source of frustration and stress for everyone.

"However, that means we must provide a smooth experience in unlocking said items, which has not been the case so far. We deeply apologize for the trouble, and are currently working on a simplified process to unlock the items, to make the experience less constraining."

Sony announced an official price drop for the PSV2, bringing the VR headset's base price to $400 starting in March. The change applies to both the PSV2 base model (was $550) and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle (was $600) available at major retailers. While the price drop goes into effect soon, the rollout will vary between stores. Some retailers, like Amazon and Target, are already listing certain models for the new price online, while others are still selling the PSVR 2 at its launch price. Be sure to check the links below so that you'll catch when the new $400 PSVR 2 price is live.

PSVR 2 - Standard Edition $400

The PSVR 2 includes the PSVR 2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controllers, and a pair of stereo headphones--everything you need to connect and play on PS5. So far, we've seen the price drop already kick in online at Target. Other retailers should be updating their prices soon.

This bundle includes everything in the base PSVR 2 package, plus a download code for the game Horizon Call of the Mountain, which is playable on PS5 with the headset. Since it costs the same as the base package, it's worth picking up if you can find it. It's available at the new $400 price online at Amazon and Target, and we expect more stores will drop their prices soon, too.

While the PSVR 2 PC Adapter cable is not part of the price drop, it's still worth picking up if you plan to use the headset on PC. The only other thing you'll need is the PSVR PC app, which is available as a free download from Steam.

Now that the PSVR 2 is more affordable, that frees you up to grab a few VR-compatible PS5 games to use the headset with. Mecha Break Is A Larger-Than-Life Hero Shooter That Scratches My Titanfall Itch

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 07:02

I like robots--especially comically large ones armed with various weapons. When I received an invitation to visit Amazing Seasun Games' Irvine, California office to try out their latest title, Mecha Break, all I really knew going into it was that I'd be playing a game featuring really big robots armed with various weapons. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting (other than access to the aforementioned giant robots), but I certainly wasn't expecting to fall in love.

Most of Amazing Seasun Games' previous titles were unknown to me, and all I'd seen of Mecha Break were some impressive trailers. When I finally sat down to take the free-to-play mech-based third-person hero shooter for a test-fly, I was admittedly a bit apprehensive. The live-service hero shooter market is oversaturated enough as it is, and it's a tough genre to stand out in. Is Mecha Break up to the task? So far, the answer appears to be "yes."

Mecha Break is mech-nerd heaven.

The game features a cast of 13 different mechs--referred to in-game as Strikers--each with their own set of unique weapons and abilities. When selecting a Striker, players can look at a graph showing that particular mech's strengths and weaknesses. Some Strikers are great for lone-wolf playstyles, some are better at supporting or defending one's team, and some are a combination of both. Each Striker feels surprisingly well-balanced--while I quickly fell in love with a specific Striker that fit my preferred playstyle (more on that in a bit), I never felt that one Striker was too overpowered or underpowered.

The Delightful Cozy Game Islanders Is Getting A Sequel

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 07:00

It's been almost five years since Islanders gave cozy-game lovers a casually engaging city-building experience. Now, Coatsink has announced that a sequel, Islanders: New Shores, is coming to consoles and PC this summer. In the first-look video below, New Shores retains the appealing aspects of the first Islanders while teasing some of the new features that will be integrated into the gameplay.

As in the first game, New Shores allows players to develop cities and structures on a series of breathtakingly gorgeous islands and transform them as they see fit. Each level begins with a number of buildings at players' disposal, but they also have consider where the structures should be placed in order to get the maximum amount of points during the stage. Earning those points allows additional buildings to be unlocked, which opens the door to even more options.

One of the new features introduced in New Shores is called boons. It's a one-time power-up that's unlocked on each stage as players collect points. Boons can allow players to perform some of the more difficult tasks in a single action, including the creation of duplicate buildings and the destruction of others to make way for something new. However, boons should be used sparingly, since some of the trickier levels may need them more than the earlier levels do.

X-Men Join Dice Throne As Virtual Version Of The Tabletop Game Is Considered

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 06:01

Dice Throne is a tabletop game that utilizes both dice and cards to pit heroes against each other in fast-paced turn-based combat, with additional options to face off in teams or have everyone band together in a cooperative adventure. It's a remarkably quick (and fun!) game to set up and play, making it an ideal choice for folks who don't have hours to devote each week to D&D, Pathfinder, or any system that similarly lends itself to a long-form adventure.

The Dice Throne team is set to soon release its long-awaited X-Men expansion, injecting more Marvel heroes to fight alongside Dice Throne's largely original cast of characters. This is the second expansion to add licensed characters to the game--Dice Throne added a bunch of non-mutant Marvel characters like Thor and Black Panther to its roster in a previous add-on. Speaking to Dice Throne co-creator and lead game designer Nate Chatellier and CEO Casey Sershon, I asked how this "Magic: The Gathering meets Yahtzee" game approached adding licensed characters to a game and whether more IPs are being considered.

Pyromancer was one of Dice Throne's first characters.

"When we started Dice Throne, I created this five-year plan," Chatellier told me. "I love long-term planning, and the plan back then was season one, season two, a solo and co-op mode--which ended up being Dice Throne Adventures--and then a Marvel edition. I thought it was a five-year plan, it took six years to do it, but we checked all the boxes, which I'm still very proud of. When we hit that Marvel edition, that was the end of the road map. It was like, 'Okay, where do we go from here and how do we feel about working with IP?'"

Eventually, you should reach the Ruins of Wyveria, where you'll get to battle Guardian-type monsters. The key factor that differentiates these beasts from their normal counterparts is that they can channel energy to heal/close their wounds. This means you need to be quick in destroying their wounds so you can cause as much damage and grab as many materials as possible.

Monster Hunter Wilds - How To Mount Monsters

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 05:18

Wondering about how to mount monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds? Terrifying beasts roam the countryside, and they're going to stomp on your character's head if you're not careful. However, if you manage to perform aerial attacks, you might be able to clamber on top of them and hang on for dear life. Our guide helps you with this particular mechanic so you can have an edge in combat.

How to mount monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds

You can mount monsters by performing aerial attacks. First, make sure that you have a melee weapon equipped. Then, be ready to do either of these two maneuvers:

  • Jump off ledges while a creature is below you.
  • Jump off your Seikret mount while a target is at a lower height/lower stance.
  • Use your Slinger to grapple onto floating contraptions, vines, or insects, then drop down a creature that's below you.

Then, while in mid-air, press the main attack button--i.e. Triangle on PlayStation 5, Y on Xbox Series X/S, or the left mouse button. If all goes well, your character should be able to cling onto a target's back, which leads to a minigame of sorts.

Diablo 4 Season 8 Delayed, But Will Feature Return Of An Old "Friend"

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 04:52

Diablo 4 Season 8 will release "a couple of weeks" later than originally planned, but will feature the return of a familiar "friend."

That's all according to Diablo franchise general manager Rod Fergusson, who in a post on X explained the reasoning behind the delay.

"In the spirit of serving the game, not the plan, Season 8 will take a couple of weeks longer to bake than we initially anticipated," Fergusson said. "The team is hard at work on some great updates coming in the next season, so stay tuned. Looking forward to seeing an old 'friend.'"

GTA Online's Next Update Takes Flight In March

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 04:46

Following the events of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, Trevor Philips Enterprises is no more. But Trevor Philips' former associate, Oscar Guzman, isn't going let that keep him down in the next expansion for GTA Online. Rockstar Games has announced that Oscar Guzman Flies Again will come in for a landing on March 4 with some potentially lucrative opportunities for players.

As laid out on Rockstar's site, players can purchase McKenzie Field Hangar, an airstrip that's seen better days. It may not be much to look at, but Guzman plans to help players make a killing with new missions to sell and transport illegal arms. What McKenzie lacks in aesthetics, it more than makes up for as a staging ground where players can fly a Western Duster 300-H plane and the Buckingham DH-7 Iron Mule helicopter. There will also be an opportunity to steal the Eberhard Titan 250 D, a state-of-the-art gunship that belongs to Eberhard Munitions, a multinational aeronautics and munitions manufacturer.

The current state of McKenzie Field Hangar in GTA Online.

Rockstar's description also hints at a larger conflict between Eberhard Munitions and the player's character, courtesy of Guzman's get-rich quick scheme. The good news is that owning McKenzie gives players additional storage areas for personal aircraft.

Metro Developer Explains Confusing Studio Schism Ahead Of Franchise's 15th Anniversary

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 04:34

4A Games and 4A Games Ukraine might sound like part of the same organization, but as the Metro developer recently clarified, that's not actually the case anymore. In an update, 4A Games explained that though the majority of its workers remain in Ukraine, the other studio 4A Games Ukraine (now known as Reburn) is now a completely separate entity.

In the update, 4A explains that the original founders of the studio formed 4A Games Limited to create a new HQ in Malta with 50 members of their team back in 2014. When Metro Exodus was released in 2019, 4A Games Limited created a separate studio in Kyiv and hired roughly 50 employees from their existing Kyiv office 4A Games Ukraine, which then spun off into its own separate studio no longer affiliated with 4A or the Metro franchise, now called Reburn.

This name and studio confusion stems from Reburn's recent announcement of its new project, La Quimera. It's described as a first-person shooter with a "heavy focus" on narrative, world design, and characters. The game's world and story have been created by Nicolas Winding Refn, best known for directing Drive and The Neon Demon, and it draws from Latin-American folklore.

Want To Change Up Your Look In Monster Hunter Wilds? It'll Cost You

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 04:03

Monster Hunter Wilds is finally here, but one of its features has players scratching their heads: Players have to pay real-life money to edit their character if they decide they want to change up their initial look.

Players can create and customize their character for free at the beginning of the game, but if they decide they want to tweak that character later on, they'll have to cough up some real-world cash. This aspect of character customization wasn't shown in review copies of the game, so players weren't expecting to have to open their wallets every time they wish to change up their character's look.

The same also applies to re-customizing the Palico, a companion character who follows the main player-character throughout the game. On the bright side, this fee doesn't apply to changing up basic cosmetic features like hair, face/skin color, eyebrow color, makeup, or clothing. But making more in-depth changes will cost you.

Nintendo Will Delist A Switch Online Game For The First Time, But Only In One Region

Game News - Sat, 03/01/2025 - 03:31

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have enjoyed re-released games for a variety of retro consoles for years now, but it seems that the titles on the service are not necessarily permanent. That's because Nintendo has announced that it will remove the Super Famicom sports game Super Formation Soccer on March 28, better known as Super Soccer in the US. However, this removal only applies to Switch Online in Japan.

As spotted by VGC, this will be the first time that a game has been removed from the Switch Online retro library. However, it's worth noting that Nintendo has not announced plans to remove Super Soccer from the European or North American versions of the retro library, so you can still play it for now in those regions.

It's not immediately clear why the Japanese version of the game is getting removed from the service, or whether it's a sign of more delistings to come. However, it's worth noting that the Super Formation Soccer IP appears to be owned by Spike Chunsoft, whereas Super Soccer was published by Nintendo, indicating that there's likely a rights ownership disparity by region. In today's digital gaming climate, games are often delisted for a variety of reasons.
