Resident Evil Movie Director Making A "Full-On Terror Ride" House Of The Dead Film
Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed or produced a half-dozen Resident Evil movies that collectively made over $1 billion and later made the poorly received Monster Hunter movie, is taking on another video game project. Anderson is making a movie based on Sega's The House of the Dead series.
The House of the Dead, which debuted in 1997, is familiar territory for Anderson, as the game is focused on an agent fighting against a group of zombies. Specifically, the movie is based on 2002's The House of the Dead 3.
Anderson told Deadline he's always been a fan of the series, dating back to the arcade days.

In 2008, Liam Neeson reinvented himself as an action star in Taken, a story about a former CIA officer who went to great lengths to rescue his abducted teenage daughter. That movie appears to be one of the primary inspirations behind Indifferent Penguin's upcoming game, Tackle for Loss. But the unnamed hero of this game has his own set of unique skills to unleash on the people who dared to kidnap his daughter in Tackle for Loss' reveal trailer.
One of the other inspirations for the game seems to be chronic traumatic encephalopathy--or CTE-- a neurological disorder that is often associated with concussions suffered by American pro sports athletes, especially football players. The lead character in Tackle for Loss is aware of his condition, and the violence that it brings out of him. There's also a touch of tragedy to his story, as he admits to not being able to remember his daughter's name. All he knows is that he loves her, and he'll get her back no matter how many bad guys he has to pulverize.
Tackle for Loss has a very retro visual style that seems reminiscent of Hotline Miami. The game does include some strategy by allowing players to unlock moves and upgrade their attacks as they progress through the story. Along the way, players will discover the truth behind the daughter's abduction and uncover a deeper conspiracy connected to the criminal underworld that took her.

Just a week after the launch of Intel's latest generation of desktop CPUs, AMD has fired back with the announcement of the first 3D V-Cache-equipped chip in the company's 9000-series CPUs, with the promise of it being the fastest gaming chip on the market.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the latest in a growing line of 3D V-Cache CPUs, with each one proving to be an essential part of an enthusiast-gaming PC. It's the first to feature AMD's 2nd-generation 3D V-Cache technology, with AMD saying that this latest CPU is on average 8% faster than the previous generation's 7800X3D, widely regarded as the best CPU on the market for gaming performance. Perhaps more telling of Intel's recent woes is the fact that AMD states that the 9800X3D is on average 20% faster than the flagship Intel Ultra 9 285K that launched last week.
The 9800X3D also increases the base clock speed 4.7 GHz, with a boost of 5.2GHz and a TDP of 120W. All in all, AMD is hoping that this will improve the 9800X3D's productivity performance too, which the series has lacked in the past. It will also be the first X3D chip unlocked for overclocking, letting enthusiasts attempt to squeeze even more out of the silicon with meaningful tweaks.

The debut of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Game Pass seemingly had a noticeable effect on engagement on Xbox, while the PS5 edition of the game saw a big jump as well in terms of active users. According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the Call of Duty HQ app--which includes Black Ops 6, Warzone, and Modern Warfare III--was played by 52% of active Xbox Series X|S users and 34% of active PS5 players on October 28. That compares to 19% and 18% on October 23 for Xbox and PlayStation, respectively.
The 52% for Xbox and 34% for PlayStation figures represented all-time highs for Call of Duty HQ, according to Piscatella, who was citing Circana's own Player Engagement Tracker.
The previous highs for US daily active player engagement for Call of Duty HQ on Xbox Series X|S was 34% (August 31, 2024) and 27% on PS5 (September 7, 2024).

It's been tough times of late at Sony Interactive Entertainment, as the PlayStation company began the year by cutting 900+ jobs and cancelling games. In July, Sony axed a number of positions from its Destiny studio, Bungie, and announced a reorganization effort there. Then in August, Sony's Firewalk team launched a multiplayer FPS called Concord, only to close it quickly and offer refunds, before the studio itself shut down for good after reportedly spending $200 million+ on it. In an interview with Variety, SIE co-CEO Hermen Hulst reacted to these dramatic moves, saying they all took place as part of the company's effort to run a "sustainable business."
"I will say a few things on that. It's our duty to look at our our resource planning, and make sure that we run a sustainable business," he said. "That's part of being CEO. We never take that lightly, because we know these people personally, and it's very close to our hearts and the teams and good working atmospheres. But yes, we've had some layoffs."
Hulst went on to say that the PlayStation Studios division is actually "much greater" today in terms of employment numbers than it was five years ago. "It's grown tremendously. And that is organic growth that our existing teams, I think, hired quite aggressively, as well as through [mergers and acquisitions]," he said.

After years of rumors, Sony formally announced the PlayStation 5 Pro last month, but not without some hiccups along the way. The $700 price tag has led to some outcry, and the lack of an included disc drive is also unpopular. Regardless, Sony Interactive Entertainment co-CEO Hideaki Nishino has reiterated the company's commitment to both versions of the PS5, as well as a 10-year lifecycle for this console generation.
While speaking with Variety, Nishino said that he was happy to see that the "most engaged gaming users are interested in the PS5 Pro," and shared his belief that "new users will grab the PS5 Pro as well." "We design everything with having one ahead in our mind," added Nishino. "It's not like we just make a next step and we don't know about the two steps ahead. That's not our way of working, because we need to make sure that the 10-year-old, generation cycle continues to be going as well."
The PlayStation 4 Pro was introduced in 2016, only four years before the launch of PlayStation 5. However, there are still PlayStation 4 games in production, which means its life cycle has now reached 11 years even though the PS5 has been Sony's primary focus since 2020. Will Sony really wait until 2028-2030 to release its next-gen PlayStation 6 if Microsoft releases another generational upgrade of the Xbox first? Nishino didn't address that, but he did stress that the PlayStation 5 Pro is not a next-gen console.

Collecting these objects will radically rework the level, causing pipes to come alive or enemies to stampede across the screen. Our Super Mario Bros. Wonder review gave it a 9/10, and it’s an easy recommendation for all Switch owners.

It's been a big year for Apex Legends. Respawn's hit battle royale kicked off 2024 by celebrating its fifth anniversary with an in-game event that offered free rewards and granted easy access to one of the game's rarest currencies, a move that players appreciated. Respawn also reworked its battle-pass system, a move that resulted in furious players and a plummeting Steam review score. But rather than taking the same route as other live-service shooters and releasing a sequel, EA has reaffirmed its commitment to refining the game in its current form.
"Following changes to the battle-pass construct, we did not see the lift in monetisation we had expected," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in a recent earnings conference call. "We will continue to focus on retention and breadth of content in service of our global community as we work towards more significant, innovative changes in the future."
When asked about the potential for a sequel, Wilson immediately shut the idea down.

Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio has commented on Microsoft shutting down Arkane Austin earlier this year, a decision the WolfEye Studios boss has labeled a "dumb move" made by the company. According to the veteran game developer, Arkane Austin was comprised of a "special" group of people who had the potential to make another hit game but never got the chance to do so following the poorly received Redfall.
"I think if you look a little bit, it's obvious that Arkane Austin was a very special group of people that have made some cool things and that could pull it off again," Colantonio said to PC Gamer. "Recreating a very special group like that is, I would dare to say, impossible. It takes forever. When you have that magic of Harvey [Smith] and Ricardo [Bare] that all come together, it's a specific moment in time and space that just worked out this way, that took forever to reach. Those people together can really make magic. It's not like, 'Doesn't matter, we'll just rehire.' No, try it. That's what big groups do all the time. They try to just hire massively and overpay people to create those magic groups. It doesn't work like this. So to me, that was stupid."
Colantonio left the company he created after the release of the critically acclaimed Prey in 2017, citing creative differences in a separate PC Gamer interview. "All I can tell you is that part of the reason why I left Bethesda was that they did not want to do the kind of games that we wanted to make," Colantonio said, explaining that Bethesda had decided to shift toward making more live-service games back then.

Earlier this month, Nintendo announced and released Alarmo, an alarm clock themed with sounds and pictures from some of the company's fan-favorite video game franchises. And while only Nintendo Switch games are currently available as themes, a hacker has already found a way to run custom code on the Alarmo.
A user who goes by GaryOderNichts--who is known for his ability to reverse-engineer and hack the Wii U--demonstrated his Alarmo hack on X by showing the alarm clock using a picture of a cat instead of one of Nintendo's chosen themes.
It's possible to run custom code on the Nintendo Alarmo via USB - without opening it up!
More details in the blog post here: https://t.co/a0YBiwCVpj pic.twitter.com/NWJwHVvZcD
GaryOderNichts also posted a lengthy explanation about how he pulled off the hack on his blog. The short version is that before he could get into the inner workings of the Alarmo, the firmware had to be decrypted and uploaded to an external USB. Removing the firmware file from the Alarmo allows users to get it to accept customized code via a USB. There may be limits as to what can be put on an Alarmo, since it wasn't designed to play games. But this could be an important first step for allowing users to upload custom themes of their own, assuming Nintendo doesn't find a way to prevent it from happening with future Alarmo firmware updates.

Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 was a megahit for 2023, earning several Game of the Year awards including the top prize for GameSpot. While the game doesn't need any mods to be played or even enhanced since the mainline story itself is so rich and elaborate, that didn't stop players from downloading mods by the millions.
"Together, you've downloaded more than 50 million mods since Patch 7 introduced modding support," the game's official Twitter account posted Wednesday. "Apparently 10,000 of those downloads were you renaming Withers to Bone Daddy. So, uh, glad we could facilitate that."

A labor union representing game developers has harshly criticized Sony's recent decision to close two studios, including Concord developer Firewalk, saying the gaming giant is acting in an anti-competitive and monopolistic manner.
In a statement, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) said Sony's recent decision to close Concord studio Firewalk and mobile game outfit Neon Koi "makes it clear that now more than ever, video game workers deserve a free and fair opportunity to join together to form unions."
The video game industry has been rocked by mass layoffs and other significant shifts in recent years, and the CWA said the decisions to cut staff and cancel projects came from "highly insulated video game CEOs."
Continue Reading at GameSpotHow Hollywood's Iconic Monsters Kicked Off A Horror Game Revolution
Nearly a decade ago, in 2015, Gun Media and IllFonic were working together on Summer Camp, a horror game built to look like the slashers of a bygone era. The announcement trailer gives off strong Friday the 13th vibes, right down to the canoe wading through a (likely haunted) lake that surrounds the titular camp. No one knew it at the time, but this game would go on to ignite a spark in the video game horror space for years to come. Today, the trend of asymmetrical multiplayer horror games using licensed slashers and other Hollywood monsters still feels like it's only just begun.
Early on, Summer Camp was purely a homage; it was meant to recall the imagery of Jason's attacks on camp counselors through the '80s and '90s, but it wasn't officially attached to the IP. Around the same time, the Friday the 13th licensor group Horror Inc. and Crystal Lake Entertainment caught wind of the project during a period in which they had already been working with Steve Harris, today the CEO of Boss Team Games, and his partners at Diversion3 Entertainment to help find collaborators for a video game based on the IP. Summer Camp looked to be a great fit. Rather than a new slasher character meant as an ode to Jason Voorhees, what if the game could use the killer himself in his iconic hockey mask and all?
Harris and his partners approached Gun Media and asked if they'd be interested in changing its game from a clever homage to an officially licensed tie-in. Naturally, that was enticing for everyone. Following another investment round and a few more years of development, including a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, Friday the 13th: The Game launched in 2017. Overloaded servers marred the game's early days, but it eventually grew to nearly 15 million lifetime players while bringing the many iterations of Jason to the game.

Preorder at CrunchyrollIt's a good time to be a Dragon Ball fan thanks to the release of the new game Sparking Zero and a new TV series, and if you're looking to dive back into the anime, you can do so with not one but two handsome Blu-ray box sets on November 5: Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. Not only do you get all of the episodes in crisp 1080p, but they come plenty of extra content as well. Better yet, these are available to preorder at a much lower price points than the existing Blu-ray box sets for each series.
Dragon Ball Z: The Complete Series and Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series are Crunchyroll Store exclusives. You can preorder these new sets for $142.49 (was $190) each. If you're a new customer, you might even be able to slash an additional 15% from the price with promo code WELCOME 15 or CRNEW.
Dragon Ball Z: The Complete Series on Blu-ray $142.49 (was $190)First up, Dragon Ball Z. While you're probably intimately familiar with Goku's journey to defeat Vegeta, his legendary clash with Frieza, and his showdown with the genocidal bubblegum monster Majin Buu, this edition looks like it could be the best release so far.
The big thing here is that you're getting these episodes in their original 4:3 aspect ratio--according to the listing--so unlike other releases that did a clumsy job by switching to widescreen, you're getting Dragon Ball Z as it was meant to be seen. No loss of detail due to bad cropping, just a squarish picture that captures every planet-shattering punch in rich detail.
As for the bonus materials, here's what you're getting in this release that spans 36 discs:
- Inside Dragon Ball Z: Interviews with the cast and crew
- A look back at the Hummer Tour with Sonny Strait
- Justin Cook shares His headshot collection
- Upcoming special feature sneak peek

- Dragon Ball Z Card Game: Past, present, and future
- Dragon Ball Z: Coming to America
- Textless opening and ending songs
- Trailer
Dragon Ball Z's other complete Blu-ray box set is available for $169 at Amazon, so the current price point for the new one offers a nearly $30 discount--plus it looks like it could be a better set overall.
Preorder at Crunchyroll Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series on Blu-ray $142.49 (was $190)Dragon Ball Super first aired in the 2010s, and came during a renaissance for the franchise. After two successful feature films that expanded on the series and introduced major new characters like Beerus, the God of Destruction, new threats arose to challenge Goku and his allies. Like the Dragon Ball Z: Complete Series box set above, this version is packed inside of a big slipcase with cool art and contains all the Dragon Ball Super episodes across 20 Blu-ray discs.
Since this was a modern production, the widescreen format works in the favor of Dragon Ball Super as that's the aspect ratio it was originally produced in. It's a pretty sharp-looking series overall, and it's easily the most action-packed incarnation of the franchise to date. Here's a closer look at all the special features you're getting in this release:
- Catching up on the Dragon Ball Universe: Sonny Strait and Savannah Ligaluppi, Christopher R. Sabat and Hero D. Sabat
- Watching Dragon Ball Super with Jason Douglas and Ian Sinclair
- Anime Expo 2017: Interview with Sean Schemmel and Jason Douglas
- Anime Expo 2018: Interviews with Sonny Strait, Matthew Mercer, and Kyle Hebert
- Coffee Break with Mai and Trunks
- An interview with Sean Schemmel

- Sarah Wiedenheft and Dawn Bennett answer Twitter
- Two Humans and an Android
- Interview With Patrick Seitz and Kyle Hebert
- Textless opening and ending songs
Dragon Ball Super's complete series previously released as a limited-edition gift set with steelbook cases. The price comparison isn't as fair due to the presentation of that set, but you're saving about $50 overall by ditching the steelbooks. The gift set is available for $191 at Amazon.

On the disc you'll find the complete series of 25 episodes in high-definition with both English and Japanese dubs, as well as all the extras from previous releases.
Preorder at CrunchyrollIn case this sells out, Amazon has stock of the regular Berserk Blu-ray. You can pair that with the Berserk: The Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition Blu-ray for $54 (was $$70), a more faithful retelling of the original manga but one that was divisive with fans due to its use of CG-animated sequences with traditional 2D animation. Originally released as a trilogy of films in 2012-2013, it was recut into 13 episodes, and this Blu-ray release both English and Japanese dubs.
