PlayStation Just Had Its Best Sales Quarter Yet, PS5 Lifetime Sales Now At 75 Million

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 01:33

The PlayStation 5 has reached a new milestone, as Sony revealed that the console has enjoyed its best sales quarter to date. In its financial results for the three months that ended on December 31, 2024, Sony says 9.5 million PS5 consoles were shipped, and with overall sales currently at 75 million units sold, the PS5 is now almost on par with the PS4 at the same point during its lifecycle (76.5 million units).

What's interesting to note here is that these results also include the $750 PS5 Pro console bundled into them, so it's not clear yet what its sales impact currently is when compared to the regular models available at a substantially lower price.

A closer look at the business of PlayStation.Gallery

According to Sony, 42% of PS5 purchases were new users and the company also noted that even more PS4 owners are migrating to PS5. Sony says games like Astro Bot and Helldivers 2 were also successful at helping it expand into family and live-service game markets.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Studio Reports It's Approaching 2 Million Sales

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 01:20

Embracer Group has faced struggles in recent years, shutting down multiple studios and failing to produce a game that’s both a commercial and critical success, but it seems that streak is over with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The game is rapidly approaching 2 million copies sold, according to Embracer, having sold 1 million copies in its first 24 hours. The game recently peaked at 250,000 concurrent users on Steam.

Developer Warhorse has big plans for future support for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The game already has several pieces of announced DLC, some of which were included in the Gold Edition. Following that, Warhorse announced its year-long roadmap for the game, with plans to keep supporting it for years.

"The success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a reminder of our core to bring great products to the market," said Embracer Co-founder and CEO Lars Wingefors on Thursday during the company's Q3 results (via VGC). The studio's previous title, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, received several years of updates and ports to new consoles, including a highly successful Nintendo Switch version.

New Until Dawn Trailer Serves Up Fresh Nightmares

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 01:14

A new trailer has gone live for Until Dawn, the upcoming film adaptation of Supermassive's horror game. Starring Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Maia Mitchell, Ella Rubin, Belmont Cameli, Ji-young Yoo, Willem van der Vegt, and Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill, the film is due to hit theaters on April 25.

"One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers," the official film synopsis reads. "Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one--only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening."

Until Dawn isn't a shot-for-shot adaptation of the video game, but it does have some connective tissue with it in the form of a time-loop that makes the cast experience multiple deaths. Similar to the choose-your-own-demise gameplay that allowed players to explore the consequences of their choices, this will allow the film to effectively restart several times as the cast has to figure out a way to survive.

Escaping From The Devil With A Car And A Dream Is Wicked Fun In Scaravan 66

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 01:00

If you haven't been paying attention to Lithic Entertainment's Scaravan 66, you ought to. The car combat-focused roguelike is a fast and frenetic ride through a version of hell informed by 1950s greaser aesthetics and 1980s British punk rock, and it feels fantastic. I've only played a demo of the game, but the explosive and high-octane combat already has its hooks in me and I'm eager to jump into the full experience. Admittedly, the narrative elements of the game haven't quite wowed me yet, but what's there potentially sets up something that could be interesting in the context of the full game.

In Scaravan 66, you play as Lucky D, a leather jacket-wearing, pompadour-rocking Road Reaper condemned to harvest mortal souls for the Devil. But you're tired of it, and so you've opted to escape the seemingly endless highway of the underworld. The Devil sends her minions to stop you, ranging from explosive barrel-throwing zombies to gun-wielding lycanthropes. During her escape, Lucky D can pull off at exits to speak to other Road Reapers and denizens of Hell, each of which has unique perks to purchase and a personal story to tell. As a roguelike, Lucky D is forced to start over after each failed escape attempt, learning more about Hell and her fellow Road Reapers, as well as permanently upgrading her weapons and car with each subsequent loop.

"Scaravan 66 features the classic roguelike gameplay loop, complemented by the thematic drudgery of cycles," Lithic Entertainment co-founders Al Bellemare and Andy Wood emailed me in a joint response. "Cycles we feel trapped in, cycles we want to break free from. Life circumstances that we did not choose, but must continuously face every day."

The Last Of Us Series May End After Four Seasons, Says HBO Boss

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 00:36

After a nearly two-year hiatus between seasons, The Last of Us is set to return soon to HBO and Max with the beginning of its adaptation of The Last of Us Part II. While the show has been a massive success among audiences and critics, HBO drama EVP Francesa Orsi doesn't believe that The Last of Us will run any longer than four seasons.

"We don't have a complete or final plan, but I think it's looking like four seasons," Orsi told Deadline. "I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it's looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we're done."

Co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin previously indicated that The Last of Us could run between three and five seasons. The story from The Last of Us Part II will also take multiple seasons to finish, especially since Season 2 will only be seven episodes long. Presumably Naughty Dog will release The Last of Us Part III at some point in the future. But that project has yet to be formally announced and there are currently no indications that Mazin and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann have planned far enough ahead for the show to include the events of that game.

A Trio Of Old-School Mech Shooters Are Coming To PlayStation Plus Classic Games

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 00:30

Earlier this week, Sony set the stage for the rest of this year and beyond with the first State of Play for 2025. But while looking to the future, Sony didn't forget about the past. During the onslaught of announcements and reveal trailers, Sony noted From Software's 1997 PS1 mecha shooter, Armored Core, is coming to PlayStation Plus Classic Games in the near future.

Armored Core Project Phantasma and Armored Core Master of Arena are also slated to hit PS Plus Classic Games "soon," although Sony didn't set a specific date for either of those titles to arrive. The most recent game in the series was Armored Core 6 in 2023, and there hasn't been any concrete word yet about any additional sequels on the way.

In the more immediate future, the PSP game Patapon 3 is making the leap to PS4 and PS5 when it joins PlayStation Plus Premium on February 18. This adventure/rhythm game will feature newly enhanced visuals as well as rewind and quick save features as players lead their Patapon followers into 80 different quests.

Lies of P Prequel Expansion DLC Announced For Summer 2025

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 00:30

The first Lies of P expansion was announced during the February 2025 State of Play, and it'll arrive in Summer 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Overture is a prequel that'll take players back to the beginning of the Puppet Frenzy, revealing how the city of Krat fell into ruin.

As Geppetto's Puppet, P, you'll come into contact with a strange artifact that allows you to travel back in time to Krat alongside the legendary Stalker Lea and uncover the dark secrets that led to its destruction. Developer Round8 Studio says that players can expect opulent locations to explore, mysteries to uncover, and of course, cunning enemies to test your skills against. P will be able to make use of new weapons and an additional combat style to help him survive against overwhelming odds.

"Through Lies of P: Overture, we aimed to fully refine, forge, and complete the story as we originally envisioned it. There's a term in movie making known as a director's cut," game director Ji Won Choi said in a blog post. "This version differs from an initial theatrical release and usually includes additional footage the filmmaker believes perfects the work. With Lies of P: Overture I wonder if we subconsciously aimed to create a developers cut of Lies of P."

Monster Hunter Wilds' First Post-Launch Update Already Revealed

Fri, 02/14/2025 - 00:30

Monster Hunter Wilds doesn't release for another two weeks, but Capcom isn't letting that get in the way of revealing the game's first major post-launch update. The studio has revealed that Mizutsune will be the first monster added post-launch, teasing the dancing Leviathan in the game's launch trailer.

The first major update doesn't have an exact release date yet, but Capcom has said it will release sometime in spring-- so not long after Monster Hunter Wilds' initial release. The update will see the return of Mizutsune, a Leviathan-class monster known for its dance-like movement and use of bubbles to ensnare its prey.

Even though the update is still a while away, Mizutsune has been teased in the launch trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds, showing off the monster's ethereal appearance. Capcom has also teased that additional content will be coming with the free update, but details are pretty scarce at this point.

Ex-GTA Producer's MindsEye Brings Sci-Fi Action To PS5 This Summer

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 11:39

After working on every GTA title since Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001, producer and game designer Leslie Benzies left Rockstar Games after the release of Grand Theft Auto 5. Over a decade later, Benzies is set to release his new game, MindsEye, later this year as seen during Sony's State of Play. And if the new trailer is any indication, MindsEye is going to be an action game with some sci-fi touches.

MindsEye puts players in control of Jacob Diaz, an ex-soldier who has a neural implant called The MindsEye placed in his head even after his military service has ended. The MindsEye is also giving Jacob visions of a covert mission he can't quite remember that may have changed his life for the worse. But as Jacob goes looking for answers, he finds himself beset by an unknown faction that's out to silence him with extreme prejudice.

As seen in the accompanying gameplay trailer below, MindsEye takes place from a third-person perspective, and GTA fans will probably be right at home as Jacob uses any means necessary to take out his foes. He can even get in cars and engage in shootouts from behind the wheel. Jacob also has a companion drone that he can use to scout enemy positions and give himself an edge in combat.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Release Date Confirmed With State Of Play Trailer

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 10:14

After it was leaked a few days earlier than intended, Konami officially confirmed during the February State of Play that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will launch on August 28. This remake of the 2004 stealth-action game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater also debuted a new trailer during State of Play that recreated several pivotal moments from the trailer before closing with a glimpse of its crossover with Ape Escape.

Although the story and voice overs remain the same, there have been a number of new additions for this remake. There will be an option for a third-person view, as well as the traditional MGS top-down viewpoint. Players will also be able to change their camo on the fly with a quick-select button, which may help them remain undetected during tense situations.

Most of the game's Easter eggs have also been incorporated into the remake, with new additions called GA-KO, which will be hidden throughout the game. The GA-KO may not be easy to find, because their cameo makes them blend into the background.

Saros Is Returnal Developer Housemarque's New Game, Starring Rahul Kohli

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 10:05

Returnal developer Housemarque revealed its next game during February 2025's PlayStation State of Play. It's called Saros, and the award-winning team plans to launch it in 2026 for PlayStation 5, with enhancements for PlayStation 5 Pro.

Saros is a single-player action game that follows an explorer named Arjun Devraj, played by Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor), who is stranded on an alien planet, similar to Returnal. Housemarque creative director Gregory Louden called Saros an "evolution of the Housemarque gameplay-first experience" that builds on Returnal's structure.

"A key gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable," Louden said in a PlayStation Blog post. "After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to 'come back stronger' to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa.

Tides Of Annihilation Looks Like Stellar Blade Meets Arthurian Legend In Debut Trailer

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 10:00

Sony had plenty of games to show off during the State of Play livestream, and Tides of Annihilation looks like it'll offer an intriguing mix of souls-like action and Arthurian legend. Developed by Chinese studio Eclipse Glow Games, Tides of Annihilation is set in a devastated version of modern-day London following a cataclysmic otherworldly invasion.

As a survivor of the Avalon incursion, the protagonist Gwendolyn discovers that she has unlocked the power to summon the legendary Knights of the Round Table. Hellbent on saving her sister, she embarks on a quest to defeat the demigods of Avalon.

Eclipse Glow Games says that Tales of Annihilation is inspired by classic action games and that players will get to explore both London and the realm of Avalon. Gwendolyn will be able to draw upon the power of 10 distinct Spectral Knights, mixing their abilities to create a custom fighting style. As you'd expect from a game with souls-like influences, there'll be dozens of bosses to face off against and each one will require a different strategy to defeat.

Five Nights At Freddy's: Secret Of The Mimic Scares Up The Franchise's Return

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 09:52

After a nearly two-year hiatus, the Five Nights At Freddy's franchise is making a return this year with its next mainline title, Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic. During Sony's latest State of Play, the first trailer for Secret of the Mimic laid out the mission at hand and why Fazbear Entertainment is so eager to get its hands on the tech. But it may be a one-way trip for any employee who accepts the task at hand.

The Mimic made its first appearance in the spin-off book, Five Nights at Freddy's: Tales from the Pizzaplex #1: Lally's Game, before making an in-game debut as one of the antagonists in Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach's Ruin DLC. The Mimic is a prototype that can adapt and disguise itself as any of the costumed animatronic characters.

As related in the video above, The Mimic's creator, Edwin Murray, has gone missing, and the player's character is meant to retrieve his work on behalf of Fazbear Entertainment. But judging from the briefing, Fazbear may not be expecting anyone to come out of that mess alive. It even warns the player to put their affairs in order before attempting the mission.

Days Gone Remastered Rides For PS5 This Year

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 09:40

Sony Bend's open-world action-horror game Days Gone is getting the PS5 remaster treatment that the publisher has used with several of its first-party games this generation. Days Gone Remastered was previously rumored to exist in 2024, but now it's official, and players who own the PS4 version can upgrade to the PS5 version for $10.

Days Gone's PS5 features include several upgrades, such as improved draw distance, stronger graphical fidelity, better lighting and shadows, 3D audio (so you can hear those hordes of Freakers better, no doubt), and VRR support on compatible screens.

Another staple of PS5 remasters, Days Gone will also include new accessibility features, including "Contrast mode, Game Speed, UI Narration, Collectible Audio Cues, Controller Remapping, Field of View slider, and more."

New Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Trailer Debuts During February 2025 State Of Play

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 09:40

Capcom debuted a fresh Onimusha: Way of the Sword trailer during Sony's February 2025 State of Play, following the upcoming action game's reveal during The Game Awards 2024. The new Oniumsha trailer highlights some of the skills Miyamoto Musashi, the protagonist, can employ in battle against the otherworldly monsters invading his home, including using the environment to his advantage.

Musashi's face is modeled after Toshiro Mifune, the famous Japanese actor who portrayed Musashi in several samurai films in the 1950s and 1960s.

One clip shows Musashi flip a cloth over a creature's head to blind it, while another sees him use a table as a shield, before kicking it into a crowd of approaching monsters. These techniques are all in addition to standard sword strike, thrust, and parrying maneuvers, and Miyamoto has a set of special skills from his Oni Gauntlet, a magical glove that appeared in previous Onimusha games to grant its wearer unique powers.

Hell Is Us Gets Grim New Trailer At State Of Play, Launching In September

Thu, 02/13/2025 - 09:30

Hell is Us is a dark, melee-focused combat game set in a war-torn country, featuring tons of monsters and tough combat, and it's launching on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 4. While the focus seems to be on war, the trailer also features tons of sci-fi and horror elements, to create a surreal atmosphere.

The new trailer shows the main character, Rémi, and his trusty sidekick, a drone, exploring the war-torn countryside and villages, interacting with survivors, and fighting off monsters. While there are plenty of gruesome images showing the devastation of the war, there are also sci-fi monsters, like a white figure with no face, and an evil business man with a ridiculous-looking chin.

Detailed in a press release, Rémi will be voiced by Elias Toufexis, an actor who has appeared in multiple TV shows and is best known for voicing Adam Jensen in Deus Ex. Hell is Us is described as an action-adventure game focused on exploration, but without pesky map markers and quest lists. The game will use an approach called Player-Plattering, meant to incentivize players to follow their own instincts in exploration and discover new objectives and areas on their own. Rémi will need to discover the origins of the mysterious monsters in the region, which have started appearing amidst the destruction caused by the war.
