Nintendo May Use "Shorter Development Periods" On Some Games To Offset High Costs
An exciting prospect for the Nintendo Switch 2 outside of just "Switch, but bigger and more" is that the tech under the hood should allow for some more hardware-intensive games on the platform. However, bigger and flashier games could lead to increased development costs, a concern raised in a recent investors call. To assuage this concern, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke of the ways the company is planning to keep development costs down, noting how it's considering shorter dev periods as a way to do so.
"Recent game software development has become larger in scale and longer in duration, resulting in higher development costs," Furukawa explained. "The game business has always been a high-risk business, and we recognize that rising development costs are increasing that risk. Our development teams are devising various ways to maintain our traditional approach to creating games amidst the increasing scale and length of development.
"We believe it is important to make the necessary investments for more efficient development. We also believe it is possible to develop game software with shorter development periods that still offer consumers a sense of novelty."

Arkane Co-Founder Unloads On Game Pass, Calls It "Unsustainable"
Last week, Microsoft laid off thousands of workers across the company, including major Xbox studio cuts and even a studio closure. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has stated that the cuts were necessary and that Xbox needs to be a sustainable business. Now, Raphael Colantonio--one of the co-founders of Arcane Studios--has reacted to the wave of layoffs and argued that Microsoft's Game Pass strategy is "unsustainable" and bad for the industry's long-term health.
"I think [Game Pass] is an unsustainable model that has been increasingly damaging the industry for a decade, subsidized by MS's 'infinite money,'" write Colantonio on X. "But at some point reality has to hit. I don't think GP can coexist with other models. They'll either kill everyone else, or give up."
Colantonio added that he is also "fed up" with Microsoft's assertions that Game Pass doesn't affect the sales of games. In a later post, Colantonio wrote that he can explain at length "why the [math doesn't] work for most publishers/devs, nor for Xbox once they stop investing."

The Nintendo Switch 2 might be a cheaper console than the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but at $450, it's still pretty expensive. In the US, the original Switch launched at $300, making this a big jump and one that many can't necessarily afford. Nintendo recently held an investors call, with one investor noting how the Switch 2 has a higher price point than earlier consoles like the Famicom (or the NES everywhere else). This has caused them some concern that this "might reduce opportunities for young children to engage with" the console, and Nintendo addressed this directly in its response.
In response, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa had this to say: "We believe the pricing of Nintendo Switch 2 is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers, and what is most important is to provide entertaining experiences that demonstrate the value to consumers. To achieve this goal, we have incorporated various features into Nintendo Switch 2.
"It is true that Nintendo Switch 2 has a higher price point than our past gaming systems. We are creating various opportunities outside of our gaming systems for young children to engage with Nintendo characters and game worlds, with one of the ultimate goals being that they will eventually play on our gaming systems. We are closely monitoring to what degree the price of the system might become a barrier."

After being announced back at the beginning of the year, the free-to-play role-playing game DC Worlds Collide is officially live. The game is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play for mobile devices and PC. DC Worlds Collide has a lot to offer for DC fans, with over 10 play modes and over 70 characters from the DC pantheon.

The game's story draws from iconic events like Trinity War and Forever Evil, where the Crime Syndicate used Pandora's Box to open a portal to escape their dying planet and invade Earth.
Coinciding with the upcoming release of James Gunn's Superman film, that version of Big Blue will be the first new character to join the roster in DC Worlds Collide. He'll be sporting his movie-inspired looks and will be available in-game starting on July 9, quickly joined by Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Krypto, arriving later this summer.

Continue Reading at GameSpotLobbying Group Says Stop Killing Games' Petition Would Make Games "Prohibitively Expensive To Create"
Stop Killing Games, a "consumer movement started to challenge the legality of publishers destroying video games they have sold to customers," has been picking up speed recently. It recently hit one million signees on its European Citizens' Initiative petition, the minimum amount it needs for the European Commission to officially respond to it. Now, the EU lobbying association Video Games Europe has offered its own statement arguing against the Stop Killing Games movement.
"We appreciate the passion of our community; however, the decision to discontinue online services is multi-faceted, never taken lightly and must be an option for companies when an online experience is no longer commercially viable," the statement reads on Video Games Europe's website. "We understand that it can be disappointing for players but, when it does happen, the industry ensures that players are given fair notice of the prospective changes in compliance with local consumer protection laws.
"Private servers are not always a viable alternative option for players as the protections we put in place to secure players’ data, remove illegal content, and combat unsafe community content would not exist and would leave rights holders liable. In addition, many titles are designed from the ground up to be online-only; in effect, these proposals would curtail developer choice by making these video games prohibitively expensive to create. We welcome the opportunity to discuss our position with policy makers and those who have led the European Citizens Initiative in the coming months."

The Nintendo internet sleuths are at it again! In late May, Nintendo released a brief video detailing some of the new features coming to Nintendo Switch Online's Nintendo 64 offerings--which included a CRT filter, rewind feature, and more. However, that video may have contained more news than it seems, and a group of intrepid Internet users think they've cracked the code--and revealed a few new games that may be on their way to the NSO N64 service.
Via IGN, a group of fans led by vtuber Imakuni have analyzed the blurry cover-art images shown at the 40-second mark in the video below. By enhancing those blurred images and comparing them to images of Nintendo 64 cover art, the group thinks they've unearthed five N64 games that aren't on the Nintendo Switch Online service yet--but could be coming soon.

That one is a remake of Final Fantasy IX, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary today--and Square Enix has commemorated the milestone by fueling those remake rumors with a new anniversary video.
Via VGC, the minute-long video--set to the iconic song Melodies of Life from the FFIX soundtrack--runs through key moments from the ninth Final Fantasy adventure, with shots of main characters Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, and more peppered throughout. The video ends with new artwork of the team, with the words "Final Fantasy IX 25th Anniversary" included.

Stanley Kubrick fans can save big on Criterion's 4K UHD remaster of Barry Lyndon, one of the iconic director's best films, ahead of Prime Day 2025. The 4K restoration of the historical drama doesn't release until this Tuesday, July 8, but a limited-time deal at Amazon drops the price from $50 to $25. Barry Lyndon is one of many Criterion Collection 4K Blu-rays featured in the ongoing 50% off movie sale. While the annual sale often includes new and recently released films, preorders aren't always eligible for the discount.
Unsurprisingly, Barry Lyndon has vaulted up Amazon's bestseller charts. At the time of writing, the retailer estimates orders placed now won't arrive until July 22. With a two-week wait time and the current order volume, it wouldn't be surprising if Amazon stopped taking preorders soon. If you're interested in adding Barry Lyndon to your collection at this price, it'd be wise to secure a copy prior to launch.

It's a detailed look at the show, as it reveals stories about the iconic stunts that were performed. the cutting-edge tech used to make KITT come alive, and the cultural impact of Knight Rider.
Additionally, there are several more behind-the-scenes interviews, commentary tracks with Hasselhoff, and more included here.If you're unfamiliar with the series, Knight Rider followed Michael Knight, a field agent for the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). Yet since Persona offers a disappointingly linear Tokyo to traverse, I’ve been left pining to get lost in a truly sprawling virtual metropolis. Thankfully, it turns out my oddly specific prayers have been answered. Welcome to the slick and exciting new anime open-world RPG from Hotta Studio, NTE.

See at AmazonAmazon is hosting an Early Prime Day Book Sale ahead of its annual sales event for Prime members (July 8-11). The wide-ranging selection of early deals includes print books, Kindle ebooks, and audiobooks. Science fiction fans only have a small number of physical books to choose from in this pre-Prime Day promotion, but there are two very good Prime-exclusive deals on books by the creators of The Expanse.
Though best known as a critically acclaimed Prime Video series, The Expanse started its life as a critically acclaimed series of novels by James S.A. Corey--the pseudonym for writing partners Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck--back in 2011. Amazon is selling The Expanse 3-Book Box Set for only $20, giving fans of the space opera and newcomers alike the opportunity to add the first three books to their shelves for cheap. After finishing the nine-book series in 2021, Corey started work on a trilogy called The Captive's War. The first book in the series, The Mercy of Gods, is on sale for only $15 (was $30), which is its lowest price yet in hardcover.
The Mercy of Gods by James S.A. Corey $15.18 (was $30) for HardcoverJames S.A. Corey did a phenomenal job building The Expanse's believable world from the beginning with Leviathan Wakes. That trend continued with The Mercy of Gods, which was a huge critical and commercial success when it hit shelves last August. Amazon featured it on its Best Books of the Year 2024 list, and it has racked up over 9,000 customer reviews with a 4.5/5 star average.
The Mercy of Gods sets up The Captive's War Trilogy as a darker, more sinister space opera than The Expanse. It takes place in galaxy where aliens known as the Carryx have destroyed civilizations and enslaved species. But when the Carryx meet a seemingly unbeatable enemy, they turn to humans to assist in their quest. After descending upon the world of Anjiin, the Carryx abduct scientists and bring them back to their home to compete in a war with other prisoners, where the cost of losing is extinction.
The 432-page novel centers on Dafyd Alkhor, a scientist's assistant who is compelled to fight in the war. As you may expect, everything is not as it seems.
Book 2 in The Captive's War Trilogy is scheduled to release April 14, 2026. You can preorder The Faith of Beasts in hardcover for $32 at Amazon. In the meantime, you can read Livesuit, a 90-page novella in The Captive's War universe that released last October as a $5 ebook and audiobook.

You're getting a lot of reading material for 20 bucks. All nine books in the series eclipse 500 pages, and the first three clock in at 1,792 pages total:

Walmart's biggest sale of the year (so far) kicks off alongside Amazon Prime Day on July 8. While you don't need a Walmart+ subscription to shop the discounts during Walmart's sale, members get five-hour early access starting July 7 at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET. Ahead of the sale, Walmart is offering a 50% discount on a full year of Walmart+, dropping the price to only $49 (was $98).
Walmart+ 1-Year Membership $49 (was $98)Considering some of the best gaming, tech, and collectible deals routinely sell out during the early access portion of Walmart sales--or within minutes of the official start time--the membership can make it a lot easier to secure the deals you're eyeing. Outside of being able to shop Walmart Deals 2025 five hours early, a Walmart+ membership has proven useful for restock events on popular products. In recent weeks, this has included the Nintendo Switch 2 and Pokemon Trading Card Game releases.
But there are other, year-round benefits that make Walmart+ a great subscription service. Here are the highlights:
- Free shipping on all online orders
- Free delivery from local stores ($35 minimum)
- 1-Year Paramount+ Essential membership ($60 value)
- Save 10 cents per gallon on fuel
- Early access to big sales and product restocks
The free shipping on online orders is similar to Amazon Prime. Orders are typically delivered within two days, though one- and even same-day delivery are regular occurrences.
The free delivery from local stores perk is an even larger benefit, depending on your proximity to a brick-and-mortar store. Many subscribers can get their entire grocery orders delivered. But even if your Walmart doesn't have a full supermarket, it's still nice to be able to get free delivery on random products you'd normally have to drive to the store to buy. Local delivery is often fulfilled the same day you place your order, and you can schedule the time slot when making your purchase.

But you can save even more--up to $220 total--by opting for the Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle.
New Kindle users will almost certainly want to go with the bundle, but if you're upgrading to a new Kindle, you might want to skip the bundle due to a trade-in deal outlined below. The Kindle Scribe deals are exclusive to Prime members.
Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle with Premium Pen Save up to $220The Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle comes with Amazon's Premium Pen ($80 value), the official Fabric Folio Cover ($60 value), and a 9W power adapter for Amazon devices ($20 value). You can choose between Black, Denim, and Rose colors for the cover, while the tablet itself is Tungsten. The cover protects the screen and includes a built-in stand with multiple viewing angles.
All three storage configurations are eligible for the Prime Day deal: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. Each tier is separated by only $15-$25, so if you plan on using your Kindle Scribe to store and listen to audiobooks via Audible, you may want to opt for 32GB or 64GB model.

- 32GB Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle -- $285 ($500)
- 64GB Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle -- $310 ($530)
The Kindle Scribe has a 10.2-inch front-lit display with anti-glare coating, so you can read in any lighting setting. With 300ppi (pixels per inch) and 94 nits of brightness, text is crisp and clear.
The Scribe doubles as a physical notebook. With the Premium Pen, you can create handwritten notes and email them to other devices. It feels remarkably similar to writing on actual paper. You can also take notes in books and documents you're reading. If you like writing in the margins of novels, the Scribe is the ereader for you.

- 32GB Kindle Scribe -- $280 ($420)
- 64GB Kindle Scribe -- $310 ($450)
At first glance, it doesn't make much sense to purchase the non-bundle version of the Kindle Scribe during Prime Day. The 16GB model is only $10 less than the bundle version; the 32GB model is $5 less; and the 64GB edition is actually the same price. So why would you willingly give up the $60 Fabric Folio and $20 AC adapter?
You probably shouldn't unless you have a device that's eligible to trade in toward the new Scribe. The non-bundle version is eligible for an additional 20% discount when you trade in a device. Your old Kindle is the obvious choice, but Amazon also accepts other devices, including Fire tablets, Fire TV Sticks, and even some Apple products.
With a trade-in, you'll get the value of that device and an additional 20% discount on your new purchase. That's a substantial savings. Trade-in values vary considerably, but the extra 20% is worth $52 to $62--and that's automatic. Here are the new prices, not including your trade-in.
- 16GB -- $208
- 32GB -- $224
- 64GB -- $248
It doesn't matter if you trade in a Fire Stick worth $3 or the original Kindle Scribe 16GB model for $85. But it is worth noting that if you own the original 2022 Scribe and want to upgrade, that $85 figure is what Amazon offered me, effectively lowering the price of the 2024 model to $123.
