The creative director of Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Revelations, Alexandre Amancio, hasn't been shy about his belief that AAA game development is broken. Although Amancio has since left Ubisoft to serve as a senior vice president at FunPlus, he does have ideas about the future of AAA games and he believes that smaller dev teams are the way to go.
Amancio told GamesIndustry.biz that a lot of AAA studios "think that you can solve a problem by throwing people at it. But adding people to a problem stagnates the people that were already being efficient on it. It just creates a lot of variable noise ... So I think the future lies in smaller teams."
As an example of how smaller teams can collaborate on bigger projects, Amancio used Assassin's Creed: Black Flag as a hypothetical example.

The Elder Scrolls Online in 2026 will look quite different from previous years, as developer ZeniMax Online Studios goes all-in on the game's new seasonal model that will see all of the game's content updates arrive free of charge.
For years, ESO has followed a familiar, fairly typical MMO pattern of yearly paid chapter (expansion) releases. Those new chapters added new regions of Tamriel for players to explore, additional story content, optional paid DLCs, and, occasionally, things like new classes and systems.
ZeniMax Online announced in 2024 that going forward, ESO wouldn't have a traditional yearly chapter release, labeling 2025 as a "transitional" year as the team prepared to focus on its plans for 2026. In a recent livestream and subsequent press Q&A attended by GameSpot, the developers have now revealed what ESO's 2026 will look like, and it includes more experimental seasonal content, battle passes, new story content, solo dungeons, a PvP progression system, class reworks, and more. The team also announced its long-term goals for the game, including that it's looking to finally introduce cross-play between platforms, as well as long-requested features such as guild mail and guild housing.

The Elder Scrolls Online is continuing to expand, as previously paid DLC content for the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, and more will soon become part of the base game for free.
In March with the game's Update 49, the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Imperial City, and Orsinium DLC will be folded into the base game and become accessible for all players. Closer to the end of the year, the Greymoor chapter will also become part of the base game.
Currently, ESO players need to subscribe to the game's optional ESO Plus membership (around $15 a month) or purchase each DLC separately using the game's premium currency, Crowns, in order to access the content outlined above.

More than a decade after launch, The Elder Scrolls Online will finally get cross-play, as developer ZeniMax Online Studios has confirmed it's actively working on the feature. However, it might still "be a while" until the feature is ready.
While cross-play has long been something ZeniMax Online has said it wants to do and has explored options for, this is the first time the developer has confirmed it's actually happening, though there is not yet a clear idea of when, exactly, the feature will arrive.
"Cross-play is definitely coming, but it's going to be a while," ESO executive Susan Kath said as part of a virtual Q&A attended by GameSpot ahead of the game's 2026 preview livestream. "Just to set the stage on that. We are working on it. It is a complex problem for a game like ESO--it was not ever built with this in mind. There are a lot of considerations we have to make."

Baby mobs have been around Minecraft for a while, but these creatures are getting an adorable makeover for a future update. Mojang Studios has shared a first look at its upcoming baby mob remasters, which is currently being tested. When the update is finished, the dev team promises that the wolf pups, kittens, piglets, calves, baby chickens, baby ocelots, lambs, and baby rabbits will be "even chunkier, floofier, and more charming than ever before."
In the accompanying announcement video, game director Agnes Larsson explains that previous baby mobs were just scaled down versions of the adult creatures. This update is giving the baby animals their own specific designs and completely new sound recordings pulled from real animals.
Larsen went on to explain a more subtle touch that gives the baby mobs' faces a more youthful appearance.

The long-rumored Fortnite collab with South Park is now official, as Epic Games dropped a new short film that shows how the boys are going to get sucked into the metaverse. We also got some specifics about what the collab will entail: a new five-player mode for Battle Royale, a free mini-pass through which players can earn South Park cosmetics, and at least five skins in the item shop. Oh, and Wonkeeland on the BR map will become Cartmanland.
Using a short film to reveal the collab is something that Fortnite recently also did for its Simpsons-themed season in November--a Fortnite collaboration being something else that The Simpsons did before Butters could. The brief video, which includes a gameplay teaser at the end, shows us that the boys are avid Fortnite players, but Butters never gets to play with them since squads are capped at four players. So he tries to use the Stick of Truth to make them play with him, but it doesn't go quite the way he thought it would.
South Park's intrusion into Fortnite will come with several changes for Battle Royale. Wonkeeland is now Cartmanland, there will be a Cheesy Poofs healing item and a Stick of Truth mythic weapon, and for the first time you'll be able to play Fortnite's main mode in a group of five. Beyond that, this collaboration will also include an event pass--something Fortnite used to do regularly until the end of Chapter 5. This pass will be free to everyone, and we don't know anything about what it will include.

For any studio, garnering enough interest and success in a video game to the point where a sequel is justified is a commendable feat. And yet, when you're navigating a space that's growing ever more saturated--such as the case of roguelikes and roguelites--a sequel can become a necessary evil rather than a cherished opportunity to further explore existing ideas.
The roguelike genre is brimming with creativity, and the efforts of small studios over the years have led to a plethora of dedicated communities. Popularity broke containment years ago, with bigger industry names giving the genre a spin. Some have introduced modes separately from the main experience, including Prey: Mooncrash, God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, and the Freelancer mode for Hitman: World of Assassination, to name a few examples. Others, like Returnal and Elden Ring Nightreign, introduced themselves as AAA productions of these concepts.
As more developers continue to push boundaries in the space, whether that is Balatro and Buckshot Roulette kicking off a wave of engrossing gambling-inspired games, or studios still trying to capitalize on the Vampire Survivors formula, there has been a steady trend that, in some ways, is holding developers back. Put simply, the space is being overcrowded by sequels.
