How Diablo 4 Season 8 Is Making Endgame Bosses Stronger, Simpler To Access, And More Rewarding

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 03:00

When Diablo 4 Season 8 arrives on April 29, it will dramatically overhaul one core aspect of Diablo 4's endgame: the boss ladder.

Some of Diablo 4's best seasons have been ones that, in many ways, aren't seasons at all. Instead, they bring major, permanent changes to core aspects of Blizzard's ARPG. Blizzard knows this all too well, as its recent 2025 Diablo 4 roadmap shows that each of the game's three seasons for the remainder of the year will look to improve various aspects of the core game experience.

That is definitely the case for the boss-focused Season 8: Belial's Return. It not only brings new bosses into the endgame, including the return of the fan-favorite Belial from Diablo 3, but also makes changes to existing bosses to make them more challenging. It overhauls how to access (and gain loot from) endgame bosses, as well as a few other flourishes to make the whole endgame boss loop more interesting, and rewarding, than before. The icing on top is that defeating each boss will let players harness some of their most-iconic abilities in the form of new seasonal powers that can be incorporated into builds for game-changing combinations.

Diablo 4's Battle Pass Is Getting A Major Rework For Season 8

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 03:00

Diablo 4 Season 8 launches April 29 and, in addition to overhauling the game's endgame boss system, will also completely rework its battle pass to give players more control over which rewards interest them the most.

The new battle pass system is called The Reliquary, and it breaks down rewards that would typically be in the battle pass into a number of different categories. The core seasonal Reliquary will actually be free, and at least for Season 8, will include a new Town Portal cosmetic, a weapon cosmetic, mount cosmetics, and some of the game's premium currency, Platinum. Meanwhile, separate Reliquaries for cosmetic armor, weapons, and "beasts" (aka pets and mounts) will also be available to unlock with Platinum.

A look at what all is new in Diablo 4 Season 8.

Each reward in each Reliquary can be unlocked in any order using a new currency called Favor Tokens that are earned from slaying monsters and completing quests. Claiming all of the rewards from a particular Reliquary will then grant a bonus reward that doesn't require a Favor Token to unlock. Players will be able to hold 99 Favor Tokens at one time, with items costing anywhere from two Favor Token to 10.

The Last Of Us Season 2's Shocking Episode Ended With A Familiar Voice

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 02:56
This post contains spoilers for HBO's The Last of Us

The latest episode of HBO's The Last of Us, in which Pedro Pascal's Joel was brutally murdered by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), ended with a beautiful rendition of Shawn James' "Through the Valley."

If the voice singing the song sounded familiar, that's because it was the pipes of none other than Ashley Johnson, who played Ellie in the video game series.

As Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Jesse (Young Mazino), and Dina (Isabela Merced) are towing Joel's dead body back to Jackson, the song begins to play. Johnson originally recorded her version of "Through the Valley" for a promotional teaser for The Last of Us: Part II in 2016.

Switch 2 Ad Brings Back Paul Rudd Decades After His SNES Commercial

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 02:08

Sometimes, you must go back to go forward. Nintendo apparently took that to heart when promoting the upcoming Switch 2, as the company has brought back Ant-Man star Paul Rudd for a new commercial for the hybrid system. Rudd originally appeared in a 1991 TV ad for SNES before he was a household name and Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero.

Nintendo shared the Switch 2 launch commercial--called Now You're Playing Together--on YouTube. It's a riff on the 1991 SNES commercial starring Rudd that ended with, "Now you're playing with power. Super Power." In fact, GameSpot has highlighted how Nintendo has, in a way, remastered the SNES ad for Switch 2, which can be seen below from Instagram.

Rudd sports the same outfit in the new Switch 2 ad, which spurs actor Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Wet Hot American Summer) to ask: "Why are you dressed like you're in a boy band?" The commercial puts a major focus on GameChat, the system's social hub that allows for voice and video chat.

Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves Review In Progress - A New Mark

Games Reviews - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 01:49

Though the names Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat certainly aren't new, the newest installments in each franchise has reinvented the tenured fighting series' in different ways--one with a fresh coat of hip-hop-infused paint, the other with a total reboot of its lore.

Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves, then, might be expected to try and reinvent its wheel with a similar kind of wild ambition, but it doesn't stray too far from its Garou roots. At the core of the experience is a mechanically sound fighting system in which skill rises above luck and the thrills of gameplay are heightened by the new REV System, which I find to be one of the most balanced ideas in recent fighting games. That said, the limited ways to explore this new system, coupled with some baffling decisions regarding its roster, makes City Of The Wolves lose some of its bite.

At the core of this new Fatal Fury is the aforementioned REV System, a risk/reward mechanic that can completely change the flow of a match in an instant and leads to some exciting finishes against CPU and human opponents alike. A small, semi-circular meter called the REV Gauge will build up as players use specific moves and abilities, like REV Arts or REV Accel, as well as every time you block.

Fortnite Is Finally Getting Winter Soldier Skin--And A White Widow Skin You Can Earn Free

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 01:47

Marvel's roster of Fortnite skins is enormous, but it's had a Bucky Barnes-shaped hole squarely in the center for years now. Fortunately for fans of Captain America's BFF, the Winter Soldier finally arrives in the Fortnite item shop on April 30, and he's bringing one of his fellow Thunderbolts, the White Widow aka Yelena Belova, with him. But you'll be able to earn the White Widow skin for free by placing well in a tournament.

The Winter Soldier and White Widow are the newest cel-shaded Marvel skins.

The two skins are the latest to make use of the "Pen & Ink" style that gives the characters a cel-shaded, comic book-esque look, like last summer's Deadpool and Wolverine skins. Naturally, the two will each have their own set of accompanying cosmetics. The Winter Soldier will have a back bling, a pickaxe, and a wrap--and the pickaxe includes a built-in emote that will summon the pickaxe even if you don't have it equipped. The White Widow set is similar, with a back bling, pickaxe, wrap, and a standalone emote. There was no mention of bundles or pricing in the announcement.

If you want a chance at earning the White Widow skin for free--and perhaps earn a discount on a hypothetical bundle with the Winter Soldier--you should compete in the Thunderbolts Cup, for battle royale duos (build mode only). Top performers in each region will earn the White Widow outfit, but there are other free goodies too that are easier to get. You'll unlock the Winter Soldier wrap by earning eight tournament points, and the White Widow wrap for 40. Both of point totals can be easily earned by simply placing highly during a match or two while hiding in bushes the whole time, if tournament play sounds more sweaty than you'd like.

Bethesda Announces Oblivion Stream Amid Elder Scrolls Remaster Leaks

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 01:36

Amid a flurry of leaks and rumors, Bethesda has now announced that it will make some kind of announcement on April 22 pertaining to "IV." Combined with an image of a character with a shielded face, many are taking this to be a reference to the heavily rumored The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster. This seems like a pretty safe bet, especially considering images and details about an apparent Oblivion remaster recently leaked on developer Virtuos' website.

Whatever it is, we'll find out on April 22 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET.

A remake of Oblivion has been rumored for years, dating back to when it was first mentioned in the court documents that came out of the FTC vs. Microsoft case. It was initially rumored that an Oblivion remaster could have a shadowdrop on April 21, but that's apparently not going to happen.

CFB 26 Will Feature An Unexpected Tie-In With One Of The Biggest Bands Ever

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 01:12

EA Sports has announced a partnership with the legendary band Metallica. The "For Whom The Band Tolls Competition," as it's called, will see EA Sports and Metallica come together to give one collegiate marching band the chance to record the CFB theme song and a Metallica song for a future CFB title.

The existence of this competition is pretty much all we know so far. The announcement stated that the winning marching band will get to record a Metallica song for a future version of CFB, and given that this is only just being announced in late April, it would seem the song wouldn't be ready until the inevitable CFB 27 in 2026.

WWE's Drew McIntyre Debuts Doom: The Dark Ages Gear For Wrestlemania Entrance

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 00:10

Video games and wrestling are two great tastes that go great together. From The New Day repping Final Fantasy 14, to Speedball Mike Bailey paying homage to Chrono Trigger, it's been a years-long trend that refuses to slow down. At the biggest stage of professional wrestling this past weekend, former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre donned Doom: The Dark Ages-inspired gear for his match against Damian Priest.

McIntyre's feud with former world champion Priest has been building since last year's Wrestlemania when Priest cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on the Scottish Warrior and took his newly won World Heavyweight Championship. The two were billed for a Sin City Street Fight with Drew getting the win.

McIntyre donned a scaled cloak with spiked pauldrons and armored gauntlets, along with his traditional kilt. He even had the Doom Slayer, as well as his shield and helmet, at the entrance, as part of his video graphics.

New Doom: The Dark Ages Trailer Teases An Ass-Kicking For The Doom Slayer

Game News - Tue, 04/22/2025 - 00:01

Doom: The Dark Ages looks like it'll be one of the biggest games of May 2025, and there's a new trailer to show off how you'll reduce the armies of hell to single-digit numbers in it. The trailer also shows off some of the story for the game, which serves as a prequel to 2016's Doom.

One of the fascinating things about Doom is that its protagonist has remained the same throughout the original trilogy of Doom games through to the 2016 game and its sequel, Doom Eternal, but there is a period of his history that has remained unexplored. Doom: The Dark Ages looks like it'll fill in the gaps, as the trailer provides a glimpse of Argent D'Nur and how the Doom Slayer--who was enslaved by the Maykrs after his trip to Hell--becomes a living legend on that world.

There's also a tease of a one-sided showdown between the Doom Slayer and Hell's would-be king, a quick look at the Doom Slayer's new arsenal of medieval-themed weapons, and an Atlan mech sequence where players will take on skyscraper-sized demons.

Minecraft Movie Boss Talks Chicken Jockey Craze And A Sequel

Game News - Mon, 04/21/2025 - 23:56

Warner Bros. movie boss Jesse Ehrman has discussed A Minecraft Movie, saying he didn't expect the "chicken jockey" phenomenon to kick off as it has, while also saying the company would be silly to not make a sequel.

Speaking to Financial Times, Ehrman said, "I'd be lying if I said I knew that [chicken jockey] would be a thing, but it was something that we talked about."

The executive added: "You can't account for the emergent behavior and the things that people connect with. You just want to create a movie that feels fun and authentic to people's engagement and experience with the game. And if you're rigorous about that, then these things can happen."

A Minecraft Movie Surges Past $700 Million Worldwide

Game News - Mon, 04/21/2025 - 23:56

A Minecraft Movie has grossed over $700 million worldwide, with about $345 million domestically and $376 million internationally. So far, the total is about $721 million.

According to Box Office Mojo, A Minecraft Movie brought in a little over $41 million this past weekend in the United States. $9.5 million came in on Sunday, a nearly 40% drop off from Saturday which brought in $15.8 million, as well as $16 million on Friday. Still, that shouldn't be too surprising considering this past Sunday was the Easter holiday.

Despite this big milestone, it's still the second-highest-grossing video game movie ever, continuing to sit behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion. A Minecraft Movie still has a little more than halfway to go if it wants to catch up.

Marathon Alpha Update Allows Players To Talk About The Game

Game News - Mon, 04/21/2025 - 23:53

Bungie has announced that it has updated one of the guidelines for Marathon's upcoming closed alpha test. Bungie is removing the NDA from the alpha and players will be able to talk about their experiences with it when it begins on April 23 to when it ends on May 4.

"As developers we believe community feedback and dialog is essential to make the best version of Marathon. Up until now, this feedback has come from closed playtest sessions," Bungie said in a statement. "In the spirit of building towards that future, we've decided to remove the NDA from our Closed Alpha Test. Everyone can share their thoughts, feedback, and footage, including streaming starting on April 23."

Bungie added that the studio is most interested in hearing feedback surrounding Marathon's gunplay, weapons, maps, runners, early-game progression, PvP engagements against other players, and PvE engagements against AI. As this isn't the full game, Bungie also clarified that the alpha will not include aspects such as final visuals, a polished user interface, a complete narrative, and ranked play.

The Last Of Us Season 2's Shocking Death: Cast And Writers React To The Big Reveal

Game News - Mon, 04/21/2025 - 23:23
This post contains major spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2.

In the newest episode of HBO's The Last of Us, Joel (Pedro Pascal) is brutally and slowly beaten to death with a golf club by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). This also happened in The Last of Us: Part II the game, of course, so many viewers of the TV series were wondering when during Season 2 it would happen. Now that it has happened, Pascal, along with showrunners and writers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, have discussed the momentous event in great detail.

To begin with, Druckmann told Variety that the team debated when during Season 2 to have Abby kill Joel, and it was ultimately decided to do it in Episode 2 to help the story move along.

"Even in the game, there's like an hour or something before you get to this moment. But we also knew it needed to be early enough, because this is the inciting incident for this story," he said. "So yes, we always pick every permutation, but the later it got in the season, it just felt we were kind of dragging our feet instead of just getting to the meat of what the story is about."

Nintendo Tells Fans To "Stay Tuned" For Next 3D Mario Game On Switch 2

Game News - Mon, 04/21/2025 - 22:47

Compared to previous Nintendo gaming console launches, the Switch 2 is arriving with a very small selection of first-party games. A new 3D Mario game was expected to be revealed during the big April Nintendo Direct, but that never materialized. For now, Nintendo's favorite plumber will kick off the Switch 2 era in Mario Kart World instead. When can fans expect Mario to leap back into action? Nintendo remains tight-lipped on the future of its mascot, but it is teasing some news in the future.

"Stay tuned," Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said to CNN. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I'm sure will make its way to the platform."

While Bowser's brief response could hint at something happening in the future, it's anyone's guess how long the wait will be for a new Mario 3D game. It has been eight years since Super Mario Odyssey arrived on the Switch, and since then, we've seen Mario in remasters of Wii U classics, spin-off games, remakes, and the well-received Super Mario Bros. Wonder 2.5D platformer game.

Last Of Us Episode 3 Kicks Off A Quest For Revenge

Game News - Mon, 04/21/2025 - 22:22

Since HBO's The Last of Us premiered two years ago, fans of the series have been nervously awaiting a particular harrowing scene from The Last of Us Part 2, which was released five years ago. As viewers watched last night's episode, everything played out very similarly to the game--with minor changes to the overall narrative--and the show will never be the same again. Episode 3 ignites a path of revenge.

Spoiler warning: If you haven't seen the episode or played the game, last chance before we dive in.

On last week's episode, we learned that there was another fringe group, similar to the Fireflies from Season 1, that wanted to find Joel (Pedro Pascal) and kill him. Led by a young woman named Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the group tries to infiltrate the Jackson settlement, but when a plan goes awry, Abby finds herself being saved by Joel. She leads him and Dina (Isabela Merced) to the group's holed-up lair. There, Joel is executed, but not before Abby explains why he had to suffer. All the while, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) has to watch the finishing blow.
