Dungeons & Dragons has spawned numerous novels over the decades, but some of the most celebrated are the original Dragonlance Chronicles novel trilogy written by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis. Dragonlance Chronicles is a 1,056-page omnibus featuring the three original novels in the series co-written by Hickman and Weis: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning. The series is based in the official Dragonlance campaign setting for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons First and Second Editions, which itself was borne out of Hickman and Weis' D&D sessions in the early 1980s. The high fantasy trilogy follows a band of adventurers who get swept up in an epic conflict known as the War of the Lance. The trilogy was published alongside numerous other official D&D works set in the Dragonlance universe, including adventure modules, spin-off board games, video games, and more.

While the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy served as the official storyline for the original AD&D Dragonlance modules, future editions of D&D have also featured official modules and expansions set in the Dragonlance setting, including the most recent Fifth Edition. Aside from the official game materials, it has spawned over 190 spin-off novels, including two follow-up books to the original trilogy, Dragonlance Chronicles: The Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame. Unfortunately, physical copies of both books are sold out, but you can pick up Kindle and audiobook editions of Summer Flame at Amazon.

It Sure Sounds Like Xbox Games Are Coming To Switch 2

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 07:22

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer expressed support for Nintendo--and hinted that Xbox games will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2--in a recent interview with GamerTag Radio.

"I want people to be able to experience the games that we build, the services that we offer, on as many devices as we can," Spencer said of Microsoft's push to put Xbox games on as many screens as possible.

"We're really taking the approach of, 'We want people to be able to play Xbox on many different screens,'" Spencer said. "We're not gonna put walls up around where people can engage with the great games our studios are building, or where they can experience Xbox through different forms. Whether it's cloud [gaming], whether it's on PC, whether it's on handheld, whether it's on phones... I want everybody to be able to play on Xbox, and it does mean more of our games shipping on more platforms, not just on PlayStation. We love the work that we do with Nintendo, we love what we do with Valve on Steam, and that's what we're going to continue to do, we'll just continue to do more of it because what we learn is, 'Put the games first, make sure the games can be as great as they can.'"

Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 Accidentally Released Early, And You Probably Shouldn't Use It

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 07:11

Earlier this month, Larian Studios announced that Baldur's Gate 3 will be receiving one last major update in Patch 8. And while select Baldur's Gate 3 players will be invited to a stress test for Patch 8, the update has been mistakenly released for some PlayStation 5 players ahead of the scheduled time. Larian confirmed the mistake in a post on social media.

No, the Patch 8 stress test hasn’t yet begun.
Yes, PS5 players do currently have access to Patch 8.
While we work with our partners to understand what’s going on, please note that any new saves made while on Patch 8 will not be compatible with Patch 7.
How’s your Monday going?

— Larian Studios (@larianstudios) January 27, 2025

Larian subsequently shared a longer update about the situation, which acknowledged that Patch 8 was mistakenly available for a few hours to PlayStation 5 players in Europe and Asia. The studio also warned that Patch 8 is not compatible with Patch 7, and urged players to uninstall and reinstall the game to return to the previous patch. Players who don't revert to Patch 7 may risk losing their saves.

Additionally, Larian indicated that receiving the Patch 8 by itself was not intended as an invitation to the stress test. Players who were selected to take part in that should receive a separate email--if they haven't gotten one already--and the Patch 8 stress test will go on as scheduled later this week.

Xbox Series S Parity Clause Is Staying Put, Phil Spencer Says

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 06:50

The Xbox Series S has faced its share of criticism, but Microsoft isn't pivoting away from the console. In fact, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer believes the Series S is part of what helps differentiate Microsoft in the market. The apparent clause at Microsoft that mandates developers support both Series X and Series S for games coming to the platform is not going to change, he said.

Speaking to Destin Legarie, Spencer said Microsoft has a "real advantage" right now thanks to the Series S because some of the most popular new platforms, including Steam Deck and ROG Ally, are more in line with the power and performance specs of the Series S.

"When we look at something like a Steam Deck or a ROG Ally, we've got this Xbox Series S version of the game that's more tailored to the device specs of a lot of devices that are getting introduced right now. I think that helps us," he said, going on to specifically mention the Nintendo Switch 2 as well.

Put Your Ones Up For The WWE 2K25 Cover Star Reveal

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 06:08

WWE 2K25 is on the way, and tonight during WWE Raw on Netflix, the official cover star was revealed. If you've followed the teases, you may have already figured it out, but now it's official: Roman Reigns will be featured on the cover of WWE 2K25.

Reigns had one of the biggest years of his career in 2024. After 1,316 days as WWE Champion, he finally dropped the title to Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40. For months, he was off-screen, as his cousin Solo Sikoa had disowned him post-defeat from their familial faction, The Bloodline, and claimed the role of leader for himself.

Reigns returned at SummerSlam to reclaim his spot as the "Tribal Chief" to a chorus of massive cheers from the crowd. Turning face but still keeping a harder edge to his character than Rhodes' purer Face That Runs The Place role, Reigns has re-emerged as the fan-favorite good guy the company once spent years failing to create.

Nvidia Stock Price Colossally Crashes After New DeepSeek AI Model Emerges

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 05:22

Nvidia remains one of the world's largest companies by market cap, but the chip-maker is having a tough day on the stock market today. The company's share price slid by nearly 17% today, wiping out more than $500 billion in market cap. Should this hold through the end of the trading day, it would be far and away the biggest single-day trading loss for a company in history. Nvidia's previous $279 billion one-day dip is the existing record-holder.

Why is Nvidia stock tanking? The stock price had been surging for the past two years as investors felt bullish on the company's fortunes due to excitement in the market about artificial intelligence. Nvidia sells the necessary GPUs to train large-language models and for general AI use, after all.

But at the end of last week, Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek launched a new model, R1, that the company claims is far cheaper than other models out there, including Open AI's o1. The fear from investors, it seems, is that AI companies may not actually require as much computing power as it was once believed. This, in turn, could have spooked investors and sent Nvidia's stock price down.

Marvel Rivals Players Think Moon Knight's OP Ultimate Might Be Even More Busted Right Now

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 04:30

Few things in life are more terrifying than hearing Moon Knight announce his ultimate attack in Marvel Rivals. Widely considered to have one of the best ultimate abilities in the game, Hand of Khonshu opens up a portal above opposing players and bombards them with area-of-effect attacks. This attack might have gotten even more powerful recently, as according to some testing done by the Marvel Rivals community, it's reportedly dealing double the damage it's supposed to.

Reddit user Sidewaysgts (via Kotaku) posted a video on the game's subreddit, showing off some of the absurd power of this ultimate in its current state. According to Netease, each talon summoned by the ultimate is supposed to do 75 points of damage, but Sidewaysgts showed off instances where training bots in the practice level were being hit with 150 points of damage instead. This seems to happen less often to bots who are further outside the field of influence, but if you're wondering why your Hulk or Thor is being absolutely shredded by Moon Knight lately, this might be the reason why.

Moon knight ult is bugged. Does 2x damage
byu/Sidewaysgts inmarvelrivals

It's not clear yet if this is a bug or intentional, but it does make Moon Knight one of the biggest threats in the Marvel Rivals metagame right now. Even without reportedly increased lethality, Hand of Khonshu is still the bane of many players as it'll continue to inflict damage even if Moon Knight is stunned or eliminated.

The Next Gears Of War Brings Back The Developer Of Judgment

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 04:26

Gears of War Judgment and Outriders developer People Can Fly has revealed that it is co-developing Gears of War: E-Day with Microsoft's studio The Coalition. People Can Fly previously led the development of the spin-off Gears of War Judgment back in 2013.

"Returning to collaborate on the next chapter of this legendary saga is both a privilege and an exciting opportunity to build upon the intense, visceral action and rich storytelling that fans have come to love," said People Can Fly CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski in a statement. "We are deeply grateful for our partners' trust and support on this journey."

Back in 2023, People Can Fly announced it was working on Project Maverick, which was at the time an unannounced AAA game with Microsoft. While unconfirmed, it's likely that Gears of War: E-Day is Project Maverick. People Can Fly also recently let go of 120 employees, as well as scaled down Project Bifrost and suspended Project Victoria.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Has More Players Than Ever On Steam Thanks To Its Biggest Discount Yet

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 04:26

Red Dead Redemption 2 is breaking its Steam concurrent player record five years after its release on Valve's platform, all thanks to a huge Rockstar Games publisher sale that sees the western epic at its lowest price yet.

A number of Rockstar's games are currently steeply discounted on Steam, but it's the 70% off Red Dead Redemption 2 that is helping Rockstar's most recent title achieve its highest Steam concurrent player numbers ever. According to data from SteamDB, Red Dead Redemption 2's player numbers have been steadily climbing since the start of the sale on January 24, when the game became discounted to just $15. The game's concurrent players peaked at 86,717 on January 26, a bump of more than 10,000 players compared to the same time in 2023 and 2024.

It's an impressive resurgence for what is still one of the most critically-acclaimed games of all time. Red Dead Redemption 2 currently sports a 98 on review aggregator Metacritic, and in GameSpot's Red Dead Redemption 2 review, we called Rockstar's return to the Wild West "a thought-provoking" prequel with a rich, detailed world we didn't want to leave. We even awarded it as GameSpot's GameSpot's Game Of The Year 2018.

Bringing Sony/Xbox Games To All Consoles May Help Grow The Industry, Says Dev

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 04:25

There was a point in time when it would have been unthinkable for Xbox-exclusive titles like Halo or Gears of War to ever make the leap to PlayStation 5. But the recent cross-platform push by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer may make those rumors into a reality. Now, Thomas Mahler--the creative director of Moon Studios and director of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps--has endorsed Spencer's approach and suggested that it may be what's best for the video game industry.

In a lengthy post on X, Mahler argued that it no longer makes sense for Xbox and PlayStation consoles to compete when the hardware is so similar and the user base is "stuck attracting the same 100-150 [million] players for over two decades now." He argues that the key to growth is to make it easier for players to get their desired games regardless of which console they buy... with the exception of Nintendo, which doesn't have to play by anyone else's rules. Mahler added that "rooting for one huge corporation to sell more boxes over another strikes me as fantastically senseless... We should all just share in the love for games!"

For now, Spencer's platform agnostic position has not been adopted by Sony, but Mahler suggested that the PlayStation maker has already bent towards that reality by bringing its exclusive titles to PC, including the recently announced Rise of the Ronin port.

It Takes Two Dev's Split Fiction Gets Trailer With Dune And Alice In Wonderland-Inspired Levels

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 04:00

A new trailer for the next EA Originals game, Split Fiction, has gone live and shows off more of the Hazelight-developed game in action. For the sci-fi level, there are anti-gravity sections and bike chases to look forward to, while the fantasy level features shape-shifting gameplay mechanics.

The other big feature shown off in the Split Fiction video are Side Stories, optional one-off adventures that are hidden throughout the game's levels. Discovering one and exploring it will transport players to even more worlds influenced by sci-fi and fantasy fiction, with some of the levels including outer space, an Alice in Wonderland-themed world, and a stage that looks heavily influenced by the recent Dune movies.

Hogwarts Legacy Gets Official PC Mod Support This Week

Game News - Tue, 01/28/2025 - 03:08

Nearly two years after its initial release, Hogwarts Legacy is getting official mod tools on PC. Avalanche Software has announced that the proverbial door is being opened for Hogwarts Legacy modders on January 30, and the developer has already lined up some curated fan-made creations that will be available to play as soon as the feature launches.

In the video above, some of the new mods are showcased for character creations and outfits. Additionally, there are options to exchange your brooms for a vacuum cleaner, a phoenix, or even a dragon. It's also possible to create new dungeons or to embrace some small bits of silliness by swapping out Hogwarts' official portraits with your own pictures.

This might go a long way towards extending the appeal of Hogwarts Legacy, which has already sold more than 30 million copies globally. Warner Bros. Games is reportedly producing a Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition with additional story content, but that has yet to be officially announced. All we know for sure is that Warner Bros. is making a sequel a priority for the gaming division. But if you still need a PC copy of Hogwarts Legacy, it's currently on sale for $16.19 at Fanatical.
