Octopath Traveler 0 Won't Even Let You Pay To Upgrade From Switch To Switch 2

Game News - Fri, 08/01/2025 - 02:57

Apparently, the zero in Octopath Traveler 0's title stands for zero upgrades, because Square Enix has confirmed that there will be no way to upgrade from a Switch version of the recently announced RPG to a Switch 2 version.

In a follow up to the game's announcement on Bluesky, the publisher clarified that the physical and digital versions of Octopath Traveler 0 on the Switch 2 could only be played by the newest system. Pretty standard, right? It then, however, went on to state that it also wouldn't be supporting upgrades between versions and that players will just have to buy whichever version of the game they want separately.

The full post from Square Enix reads, "It is not possible to upgrade from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version once purchased. There are also no plans for an option to upgrade to the Switch 2 version in the future. Please make sure you purchase the correct version."

Monster Hunter Wilds Expansion Is Coming Sooner Than Expected After Suffering Underwhelming Sales

Game News - Fri, 08/01/2025 - 01:40

Monster Hunter Wilds had a hot start earlier in 2025 on its way to becoming one of the best-selling games of the year. However, Capcom's franchise has hit some serious turbulence in the form of declining sales, which may be why the publisher is releasing Monster Hunter Wilds' expansion sooner than expected.

Capcom has moved up the release of Wilds' expansion from the end of September to August 13. This update will introduce a new level of difficulty, a new rewards system, adjustments to weapons balance, and more.

An update on release date and content of update Ver.1.021

Capcom has also shared its quarterly report for investors, and the numbers aren't good for Monster Hunter Wilds. Between April 1 and June 30, Wilds sold only 477k copies, which was only slightly above its predecessor, Monster Hunter Rise, with 389k copies. Even Devil May Cry 5 outsold Monster Hunter Wilds in that period, with 1,782,000 copies. The high number for that game may be due to the Netflix anime adaptation.

Microsoft Reached $4 Trillion Valuation After Mass Layoffs

Game News - Fri, 08/01/2025 - 00:52

Microsoft achieved a $4 trillion market cap, becoming just the second company ever to reach that valuation. Microsoft is now the No. 2 most valuable company on the planet, trailing only Nvidia. The climbing valuation comes just after Microsoft laid off 9,000+ people, including major cuts at Xbox.

Microsoft reported earnings on Wednesday, and the company beat expectations. The company's stock price jumped after that, helping push Microsoft's total valuation above $4 trillion. The stock price has since cooled off, dropping Microsoft back below $4 trillion but still ranking No. 2 overall. Microsoft is currently trading at around $538 per share, which is up 28% year-to-date and up 163% over the past five years.

The top five companies on the planet ranked by market cap include Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Alphabet, in that order.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Gets A Free Switch 2 Upgrade

Game News - Fri, 08/01/2025 - 00:50

While today's Nintendo Partner Direct wrapped up with a couple of Square Enix reveals, there was one more announcement from the RPG maker that only made an appearance in the Japanese version of the Direct. As detailed on an FAQ page, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is getting a free Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade, though it doesn't sound like a particularly big one.

According to the FAQ, the update includes "Graphical improvements which make the game appear sharper and smoother," and "Additional options which allow players to prioritize frame rate or graphics." It also stressed that "No changes have been made to the story or which items can be obtained in the game," so it really does just sound like a case of making the game look a bit prettier and run a bit better on Switch 2. The update is available today.

There was also a new trailer for Dragon Quest 1+2 HD Remake, seemingly framed as a release date trailer, though that was revealed back in May. Weirdly, despite releasing on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD Remake won't be getting an upgrade path for the original Switch, so it'll be up to you as to whether you want to hold out on picking it up if you don't have a Switch 2 yet.

Once Upon A Katamari Revealed, Gets October Release Date

Game News - Thu, 07/31/2025 - 23:59

As announced during today's Nintendo Partner Direct, there's a new Katamari game on the way. Once Upon A Katamari is the first new game in the series for consoles since 2011--Katamari Damacy Rolling Live released exclusively for Apple Arcade earlier this year--and it, unsurprisingly, sees the King of All Cosmos causing trouble for everyone's favourite Prince.

This time, the King accidentally destroyed the Earth, moon, and countless other stars, sending The Prince off on a time-hopping journey through the Jurassic Period, the Ice Age, historic Japan, Ancient Rome, and more. This game introduces items to help you along the way, like a magnet that pulls in nearby objects, a rocket that propels you forward, and a timer that freezes moving objects and time itself.

You'll have a huge range of new cousins to choose from to play as in this one, 69 total ("How nice") if you include The Prince. That includes one that looks like two people in a horse costume, another that looks like a cactus, and one that's just straight-up a mushroom. The Prince and all his cousins can be customized too, and there's a new multiplayer mode called KatamariBall where you can "roll around with up to four players online."

Persona 3 Reload Makes The Jump Over To Nintendo This October

Game News - Thu, 07/31/2025 - 23:58

Persona 3 Reload is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2025, as announced during Thursday's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase. This version arrives well after the game's initial release in February 2024 across PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Series X|S, and PC. Preorders will be available later today on the eShop.

Persona 3 Reload follows a high school student who transfers to Gekkoukan High and discovers a mysterious hidden hour known as the "Dark Hour," which occurs between one day and the next. During this time, the world transforms into a twisted, shadow-infested realm, and only a select few can remain conscious. The protagonist joins SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad), a group of students who use powerful beings called Personas to battle Shadows and uncover the secrets behind the Dark Hour, Tartarus (a massive tower that appears only during this time), and a looming catastrophe tied to death itself.

A Switch port had been rumored for a while now, with Atlus initially deciding against a Nintendo Switch version. Developers previously admitted that "the idea is there" if the team opted to pursue it, but it was never truly planned for the original hardware, citing "performance concerns."

EA revealed Plants vs. Zombies Replanted for Switch and Switch 2 at today's Nintendo Direct presentation. The remaster brings back the original tower-defense title with HD visuals and new local co-op functionality.

Plants vs. Zombies Replanted will provide "the same charm, chaos, and sun-powered defense players know and love," according to EA. Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment Trailer Shows Partner Attacks And More

Game News - Thu, 07/31/2025 - 23:11

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Koei Tecmo debuted a new trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the Musou-style action game that was announced during a Nintendo Switch 2 Direct earlier this year.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment takes place in Hyrule's distant past, and it follows Princess Zelda after she's transported back in time during the events of Tears of the Kingdom. Many characters who appeared in TOTK during those flashbacks--including King Rauru and Queen Sonia--will fight enemy hordes alongside Zelda throughout this new Musou-style game.

Fresh gameplay shown in today's Partner Direct trailer showed off new partner-based attacks, where two characters join forces for crowd-clearing attacks--in one scene, we see Zelda and Rauru link hands and blast a crowd of Bokoblins with two beams of light. The end of the trailer also teases a bipedal mech of some kind, though we don't get to see any of its abilities; instead, we only see it being assembled while lying down.

Kicking things off, Capcom revealed Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, a spin-off series that started life on the Nintendo 3DS. While it was all in-game footage, no actual gameplay was shown off, but it is slated for release in 2026. Right now it's been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, but there was no mention if it will be exclusive to the platform.

Elden Ring Nightreign Update Adds In Highly Requested Two-Player Mode

Game News - Thu, 07/31/2025 - 22:25

Another day, another Elden Ring Nightreign update, this one notably bringing sweet relief to couples forced to have a third wheel everywhere as it adds in a highly requested two-player expeditions mode. This new option doesn't change the game all that much--it simply lets two people play together as opposed to the solo and trio options that were available before. You'll now also find that the Expedition Type setting name has been changed to Number of Players, and the game has apparently been balanced for just two players as well.

In terms of quality-of-life improvements listed in the patch notes, one big one is that new filtering options are available on the relic effect filter screen so you have a "more precise selection of relic effects." If you choose multiple effects for one condition, any of your relics that match up with your chosen effects will show up too, but if you choose multiple effects for several conditions, only relics that have those exact conditions will be displayed. You can set up to 100 relic presets now as well, and there's an option to sell and favorite acquired relics in the rewards and purchasing menus.

Outside of that, there are smaller things like passive and special effects being added to the information available in the results menu, and you can now skip a part of the cutscene once you've beaten the Night Aspect. A feature where you're forcefully disconnected after a certain amount of time passes if the number of expedition participants is set to one has been removed too.

Rainbow Six Siege Rengoku Event Returns For A Limited Time

Game News - Thu, 07/31/2025 - 20:33

The popular Rengoku event has returned to Rainbow Six Siege. Live now, and running until August 13, the limited-timed game mode--where two teams of five battle to capture an alter--offers players new game mechanics, specialized weapons, and unlockable cosmetics. That includes the first Masterpiece animated skin made available via the Rengoku event Memento.

Like before, the Rengoku event tasks players with controlling a particular area of a map using shotguns and powerful kunai. These special throwable items can poison enemies, create barriers, start fires and more. A few new variants, like a freeze kunai, have also been included this time around. Players will need to plan their moves accordingly if they hope to be successful…or not, as part of the fun comes from the chaotic nature of a given match.

No Rainbow Six Siege event is complete without some form of microtransaction. That same goes for this limited-timed mode. There are a few free items that can be unlocked by logging in during the event or rewarded via Twitch Drops. New event-based bundles for select operatives can also be purchased in the shop. And there’s a signature event bundle (that features a universal weapon skin) as well as a Masterpiece animated G36C skin for Ash and Lana, which comes as a reward for unlocking all of the Rengoku Collection items. Recent events and updates, including the Siege X release, have seen huge bumps in player count for the decade-old game. With the Rengoku event proving popular in the past, Ubisoft may expect a similar trend in player count throughout the coming weeks.

Xbox Game Pass Nearly Hit $5 Billion In Revenue, Says Microsoft

Game News - Thu, 07/31/2025 - 20:27

After ordering massive layoffs across the company earlier this month, Microsoft shared its report for investors at the end of its fiscal year. One of the bright spots for Microsoft was Xbox Game Pass, which had nearly $5 billion in annual revenue for the first time.

The complete transcript of Microsoft's investor report is online, but it doesn't break down the specifics of Game Pass' milestone in terms of subscribers or even the specific revenue amount that it reached. Last year, Microsoft announced price hikes for Game Pass and introduced Xbox Game Pass Standard, which doesn't include day one access for the company's biggest games. That perk is reserved for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

Following the release of the best-selling PlayStation games in the second quarter of 2025 in the US, Microsoft noted that it was "the top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation this quarter," before crediting the cross-platform launches of Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered for achieving that feat. Other Microsoft titles including Doom: The Dark Ages, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Minecraft also appeared as best-sellers on PlayStation's Q2 chart.
