Marvel Rivals Wants Some Characters To Make You Say "Wait, Who?'"

Tue, 03/17/2026 - 02:00

Since its launch, Marvel Rivals has greatly expanded its roster of characters. Heavyweights like Captain America and Spider-Man share the battlefield with dozens of characters who have gotten a bump in popularity thanks to their appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but lesser-known heroes and villains like Jeff the Land Shark, a very different Iron Fist, and Luna Snow have also been well-received. So what's the deciding factor in choosing who gets to appear in Marvel Rivals?

According to Marvel Rivals executive producer Danny Koo, the game currently features a "greatest hits" collection of characters that comprise roughly 70% of the roster, but there is room for deep cut heroes to make the cut and get a makeover that's in line with several other radical redesigns in the game.

"So, 70% of what we do on the roster is the greatest hits, like, popular [movies] and we know about it," Koo said to GameSpot. "It doesn't matter if you have watched the movie, the comics, the TV shows, or other games, which will attract people from those sources. And then about 25% is a curveball. It's like 'I can't believe you put that character in,' right? So that will have interest from the hardcore comic book fans because they probably know more about them than what you see on TV and other mediums."

Expedition 33 Sequel? Writer Staying Quiet On Franchise's Future

Tue, 03/17/2026 - 01:30

Developer Sandfall Interactive's first game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, was one of 2025's biggest breakout success stories, and everyone is wondering if and when a sequel is coming. That remains to be seen, and the game's lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, is sworn to secrecy.

She told GamesRadar, "I cannot tell you these things. If I told you, I'd have to kill you. I'm sorry. I would love to tell people, because, as my husband knows, I cannot keep a secret."

She added: "I love sharing information. I just want to share everything with everybody. But no, I cannot. So sorry."

PSA: Pokemon Pokopia Has Mouse Controls, And They're Pretty Great

Tue, 03/17/2026 - 00:24

Pokemon Pokopia is turning out to be something of a surprise system seller for Nintendo Switch 2, which also means that it's a good showpiece for some Switch 2 features. The increased horsepower means it's nice to look at without having to scale down on Switch 1, and its social features could be useful for GameChat. But one particular nice-to-have feature could escape your notice entirely: The game uses the Switch 2 mouse controls, and they're pretty good to boot.

It's very easy to miss this feature. In fact, having played many hours for review, it never once came up. Per Eurogamer, it only pops up incidentally, if you happen to lay your Switch 2 Joy-Con on its side, which the system automatically detects as mouse mode. That in turn makes a cursor pop on-screen, accompanied by a text box explaining mouse controls. If you never put it in this position you'd probably never even realize it's an option. For those who use a Pro controller or play exclusively in handheld with the Joy-Cons attached, you'd never stumble upon it at all.

With mouse controls you can point your cursor to manipulate the environment, giving you fine control over functions like laying blocks. The ever-useful Rock Smash function is actually much better this way, since you can smash from further away by pointing your cursor, rather than having to physically move your Ditto to the right spot.

Resident Evil Requiem Is Selling Faster Than Any Game In The Series

Tue, 03/17/2026 - 00:14

Just a few days after Capcom reported that Resident Evil Requiem had set a franchise best with 5 million sales in its launch week, the company has had to update those figures. The horror hit has increased its lifetime sales to 6 million units sold globally, which now makes it the fastest-selling Resident Evil game to date. In total, the Resident Evil franchise has now sold 183 million units since it kicked off in 1996.

Those numbers will likely increase in time as Capcom has confirmed that a new story expansion is in development, and while that won't be out for a while yet, more immediate updates include a photo mode and a mystery minigame. Capcom had previously attributed the success of Resident Evil Requiem to a well-run marketing campaign and the game catering to a wide variety of players with its difficulty modes while still retaining its core survival-horror appeal. The company confirmed ongoing support and additional game content as the series celebrates its 30th anniversary.

"Capcom is readying various plans for this anniversary to delight series fans, such as a collaboration between Universal Studios Japan and Resident Evil Requiem in 2026, and orchestral concerts in Japan, the US, and Europe," Capcom said in a press release.

Marvel Rivals' Staying Power Comes Down To One Key Strategy

Tue, 03/17/2026 - 00:12

Launching a live-service game might be one of the toughest prospects in the video game industry currently, as several ambitious titles have sadly failed to find an audience and have folded shortly after launch. Marvel Rivals isn't one of those games, as the free-to-play action game has maintained its momentum with a constant influx of new heroes and game modes since it first hit PC and consoles in December 2024.

While the market might be tough, Marvel Rivals executive producer Danny Koo believes that there is space for both single-player and live-service games to flourish, as the industry has gone through numerous phases over the decades where certain ideas and genres were declared to be at death's door. The key to success for other studios might lie in being nimble and agile enough to adapt to the needs of an audience quickly.

"I think live-service is going to continue; there's a place for it. Single-player games are going to continue; there will be a place for it," Koo said to GameSpot at GDC 2026. "Over the course of 22 years, it's the same narrative being looped based on whichever slice of timeline you look at. Like, once upon a time, it's like AAA games are dead, indie games are in trouble. It's never-ending, the medium is evolving, and we have to be nimble enough to adopt technology and go where the audience is."

The Director Of The Next Resident Evil Movie Has Already Beaten Requiem Twice

Tue, 03/17/2026 - 00:06

If you needed more proof that Weapons director Zach Cregger has the credentials to make a new Resident Evil film, look no further than his play history. According to a reporter, Cregger has already completed the latest game in the franchise twice.

Deadline writer Destiny Jackson shared a photo of herself and Cregger on X, with the caption mentioning that she "talked to him about Resident Evil Requiem (he said he beat it twice already!)." Jackson remarked in a reply that Cregger "said the scariest one is RE [Village], he noped out."

I fulfilled a lifelong dream of meeting the whitest kid I know! Zac Cregger & talked to him about Resident Evil Requiem (he said he beat it twice already!) ♥️♥️♥️ I’m so happy. pic.twitter.com/7CYkywFoPv

— Destiny Jackson (@DestinyDreadful) March 14, 2026

There was little doubt that Cregger is a fan of the series--in an interview, he called himself "someone who has played I don't know how many thousands and thousands of hours of Resident Evil" and promised that his film "lives in the world" of Resident Evil 2 and 3.

Today's Games Can Feel "Soulless," But Can Punch The Monkey Change That?

Sun, 03/15/2026 - 02:29

Punch the monkey, an adorable macaque born last July in Japan, captured the world's attention recently. He was abandoned by his mother and rejected by his community, only to find solace and comfort in a $20 orangutan plush toy from IKEA. His story tugged on the heartstrings of people worldwide who felt bad for the little guy and wanted him to find companionship.

He eventually did, and Punch's prospects are seemingly better now. But Punch still lives in a zoo--the Ichikawa City Zoo--and that's not sitting well with everyone. A new video game, Zoo Fighter, has players taking on the role of Punch and ... punching bullies away with his fist or a swift kick. Knock out 100 and Punch gets to go to a sanctuary, instead of a zoo. And that's the point of the video game.

"This game is a love letter to all animals doing a bid at the zoo. Animal sanctuaries are often better for primates than zoos because they put the animals' well-being first instead of public display," reads a line from the game's description. "They offer larger, more natural spaces and rescue animals from neglect or captivity rather than breeding them," the description goes on. "The focus is on lifelong care and less human interferecne, giving primates a safer, less stressful place to live."

Donkey Kong Bananza Began As A Goomba With Giant Fists

Sat, 03/14/2026 - 05:50

Nintendo loves to build on what it has already created. Donkey Kong Bananza, a game that mixes 3D platforming with freeform destruction, began as a prototype that built on ideas featured in Super Mario Odyssey, and the prototype featured a Goomba with giant fists.

Super Mario Odyssey’s Luncheon Kingdom, among other areas, featured breakable structures scattered throughout the environment. These objects could be smashed into pieces using many of the special abilities Cappy gave Mario. Nintendo producer Kenta Motokura and programmer Tatsuya Kurihara explained how that mechanic eventually helped inspire the creation of Donkey Kong Bananza during a talk at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week.

After Odyssey was complete, Kurihara put together a simple prototype using assets from the game. He strapped two giant fists onto a Goomba to test how it would feel to smash through walls and even grab debris from those walls to throw. You can see our rendition of what that may have looked like above.

Overwatch Vet Jeff Kaplan On AI: "The Human Spirit Is Irreplaceable"

Sat, 03/14/2026 - 05:35

Games industry veteran Jeff Kaplan, the former Blizzard boss who is now making a new FPS called The Legend of California, has shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence in gaming.

Speaking to Lex Fridman, Kaplan said the technology, as it exists today, is "mostly a hot mess" when it comes to trying to integrate it into development pipelines.

He said AI may have a role to play in game development, but in its current state, he feels it's "overconfident in what it tries to deliver."
