Peter Molyneux Is Making His Last Game: "I Just Haven’t Got the Life Energy Left To Do This Again"

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 03:37

After working in game development for over four decades, Peter Molyneux is calling it quits after he finishes his god game Masters of Albion--that is, if you take his word for it.

Speaking to Edge (via PC Gamer), Molyneux called Masters of Albion his "redemption title," adding: "... it's my last game. It just is." The game was announced back in August 2024 at Gamescom Opening Night Live; at the time of its announcement, Molyneux had already secretly been working on the title for three years.

Masters of Albion is in the works by Molyneux's independent studio, 22cans, which he founded in 2012 after leaving Lionhead Studios. The game, which has players managing a medieval village, currently lacks a release window.

Kingmakers, A PC Game About Bringing Guns To A Swordfight, Delayed At The Last Minute

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 02:48

Kingmakers, the highly anticipated medieval action-strategy game that also includes AK-47s, grenade launchers, and attack helicopters, is not going to make it out on time. Just five days before it was due to launch on October 8, developer Redemption Road has announced the game is being delayed indefinitely so the studio can make it the best game it can be whenever it does launch.

"It's an incredibly ambitious, uncompromising game, and we don't want to cut any planned features for the sake of getting it out the door earlier," the studio said in a statement. "We just need a bit more time on content polish before we feel good about charging money for it."

"We're making sure everyone who buys the game is enthralled and feels like their money was well spent," the studio added.

Phasmophobia Dev Is Preparing To Shake Things Up Again

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 02:33

Kinetic Games' Phasmophobia came from humble beginnings, with a single developer bringing to life their vision for casting players as paranormal investigators and then letting them loose to explore spooky environments and be terrorized by a variety of malevolent entities.

Its success was impressive and has even paved the way for other social-multiplayer games to achieve similar success. But now, Kinetic is preparing to take another big step forward. And although it has the attention of Hollywood, with a big-screen adaptation now in the works in partnership with Blumhouse Productions, the devs are staying focused on making sure its players have plenty to look forward to too.

We recently spoke to Daniel Knight and Asim Tanvir from Kinetic to discuss the success of the game, as well as what the future holds for it and the team.

CoD: Black Ops 7 Dev Announces Fan-Requested Improvements Coming To MP Beta

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 02:21

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's early access beta went live yesterday, and Treyarch has already confirmed some updates are planned to go live sometime this weekend. This includes adjustments to the beta's slow earn rates for weapon XP and overclocks.

Day 2 of #BO7Beta Early Access starts at 10 AM PT with Zombies Survival, new 6v6 map Imprint, and our new competitive mode, Overload!https://t.co/Rzqp9Vi1O0
Plus, we've got incoming weekend updates based on your feedback:
• TTK tuning
• Door adjustments
• Increased Weapon…

— Treyarch (@Treyarch) October 3, 2025

In a recent post by Treyarch, it's confirmed that player feedback has been taken into consideration. Leveling up in the beta has been a painfully slow process, requiring tons of playtime to unlock weapon attachments and the game's new overclock upgrades. Hopefully, leveling up will feel much faster when this upcoming update goes live.

This planned update also includes adjustments to the automatic doors on the multiplayer maps. Black Ops 7 removed the manual doors from recent Call of Duty games and added automatic doors, and these open either when players get close or when someone shoots them. It's uncertain what changes can be expected for the doors, but it's possible this is related to the sensitivity of the sensors or the speed at which they open.

A Mortal Kombat Legend Is Leaving NetherRealm Studios

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 01:49

Dan Forden, the longtime audio director for Midway and NetherRealm Studios, has been synonymous with Mortal Kombat since his iconic "Toasty!" catchphrase first appeared in Mortal Kombat II in 1993. Now, after 36 years, Forden has announced his departure from the studio he joined in 1989.

Forden shared the news on his Instagram account alongside a picture of a homage to his first "Toasty!" appearance.

"Wednesday was my last day at NetherRealm," said Forden. "We made a lot of fun stuff over the years. I'm really proud of what we accomplished as well as how much fun we had making that stuff. There are so many smart, talented people there--look for more great things to emerge over the next several years. I love the little touches that people left around the studio like this little Toasty homage on the bathroom mirror. I wouldn't have lasted 37 years in the industry if fans weren't out there playing the games we made. Thanks to all of you for supporting what we've done. Live long and… Toasty!"

Ghost Of Yotei's Star Is A Deadly Force Of Feminine Nature

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 01:40

I've come to Sensei Takahashi to learn the way of the yari, but we are sitting on the edge of a cliff facing the ocean, painting sumi-e. Ghost of Yotei gives you plenty of opportunities to take a break from slaying ronin to partake in the East Asian painting style, but this is the first time it's been part of protagonist Atsu's training.

It makes sense, though. Sucker Punch's highly anticipated sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima tells the story of a woman warrior on a quest for revenge, and in between bouts of brutal killings, Atsu follows many of the same practices as the original game's protagonist, Jin Sakai. She meditates at hot springs, honors deities at shrines, follows animals to points of interest, and releases captive creatures.

But Atsu is even more connected to nature than Jin, and her affinity for the arts, coupled with her dogged, deadly determination, makes Ghost of Yotei a divine take on the power of femininity.

Activision Already Booting COD Cheaters In Black Ops 7 Beta

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 01:33

Cheaters never prosper, as the saying goes, and that's true in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's early-access beta, as Activision has already found and banned a few of them.

Players have been sharing clips of the myriad cheaters they've encountered, many of whom are using cheats to see through walls and get instant kills. One video, posted to X on October 2 by user HateToSeeMeComing, demonstrated the aimbot and wallhack they used to get the drop on unsuspecting players. Meanwhile, streamer Stodeh shared a clip on the same day of a random player folks in chat claimed was cheating since "hour 0." It looked like his team was getting crushed by this cheater.

In response to at least Stodeh's video, the Call of Duty Updates account said their "system caught this account" and that they've been "banned." Other cheaters, like HateToSeeMeComing, should face the same ban hammer with Activision telling Dexerto that various other accounts have been canned. You love to see it coming.

Free Xbox Cloud Gaming With Ads Is Being Tested Now, Report Says

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 01:16

Microsoft is gearing up to announce an ad-based version of Xbox Cloud Gaming, according to a new report. The Verge's sources said Microsoft is now testing an ad tier for the streaming service, with employees trying it out now before it may launch publicly for everyone.

The report said the free ad-based tier for Xbox Cloud Gaming will allow players to stream "some" of the games they already own, along with select titles from the "Free Play Days" promotion that allows people to play select titles on weekends at no cost. Xbox Retro Classics titles may be included, too.

In terms of the ads themselves, the report said the current iteration has people watching two minutes of preroll ads before jumping into a game. The report also mentioned that there could be streaming limitations, including a cutoff of one-hour sessions each and up to five hours for free each month. It's possible things change before the ad-based program goes live, if it does at all.

A recently discovered job ad at Netflix is seeking a candidate who will lead the company's efforts in finding ways to use generative artificial intelligence for its gaming efforts.

Vibe Out With Ghost Of Yotei's Watanabe Mode Music While You're Stuck At Work

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 00:53

So, you're bored at work, probably sitting in front of your computer scrolling nothing to look busy. (Did I just snitch on myself?) Maybe you'd rather be playing Sucker Punch Productions' new samurai fantasy sequel Ghost of Yotei, but you've got however many hours until you get home. Well, if you wanted to make the wait easier, you should definitely check out the recently released "Music from Watanabe Mode" soundtrack. It's a total vibe.

Ghost of Yotei is the PlayStation 5-exclusive sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima. Many things in Yotei are similar to Tsushima, but there are a few differences. One of them is the newly introduced Watanabe Mode, a collaboration with Samurai Champloo director Shinichirō Watanabe that features original lo-fi music created under his direction. You could only listen to these beats on your PS5 if you selected Watanabe Mode--one of three playable options based on samurai film directors like Akira Kurosawa and Takashi Miike--but now, Sony has dropped the soundtrack on music streaming services.

Released on October 3--one day after Yotei hit PS5--the "Ghost of Yotei - Music from Watanabe Mode - EP" houses nearly 30 minutes of chill beats to kill (time) to. You can listen to it just about everywhere: Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, YouTube Music, and a streaming service I've never heard of called Deezer.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Development Stable Despite Xbox Technical Concerns, Director Says

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 00:35

Unlike the previous two entries in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy that launched exclusively for PlayStation consoles--with Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S versions on the way--the third game will adopt a multiplatform release strategy. This means that Square Enix will be developing for multiple consoles and PC for a wide release, but the company doesn't expect this approach to hinder production on the game.

"We do have designated teams working on each platform so that our multiplatform approach won't impact the development whatsoever," Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi said to Easy Allies (via Eurogamer). Hamaguchi did acknowledge that Square Enix was facing some challenges with bringing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to Xbox Series X|S, suggesting that a "lack of memory" was to blame.

"As for the Xbox version, like many other publishers, I think we did see some issues with the lack of memory compared with other platforms," Hamaguchi said.

Game Pass Ultimate's Price Hike Was Quietly Paired With Another Downside

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 00:20

Microsoft has raised the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate by 50% and offered some additional perks like more games, access to Fortnite Crew, and better cloud streaming--but Microsoft is also removing a previous perk as well.

CharlieIntel has discovered that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members no longer get 10% off Call of Duty Points or BlackCell bundles. The change appears to have gone into effect recently. This discount was a pretty nice perk for regular Call of Duty players who buy DLC. In fact, this perk has been removed across the board, for every game, a spokesperson for Microsoft said. Instead, people can now earn points through the Game Pass Rewards program.

"This is not specific to any one game and reflects all games and DLC purchases. Instead of a discount on the purchases, Ultimate and Premium subscribers will earn 10% and 5%--respectively--in points when purchasing select games and add-ons from the Game Pass library," a spokesperson for Microsoft said. "Ultimate members continue to have 20% discount on select games from the Game Pass library. On top of that, all Rewards members will earn points when shopping games and add-ons on the Store, while Premium and Ultimate subscribers will earn even more, 2x and 4x respectively. See more detail on the Game Pass Rewards program here.”

Battlefield 6 Could Sell 5 Million Copies In Its First Week, Analysts Say

Sat, 10/04/2025 - 00:01

With Battlefield 6 hitting PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 10, analysts believe that EA's military shooter could sell a whopping five million copies within its first week on the market.

Veteran games journalist Christopher Dring sat down with games industry researcher and analyst Joost van Dreunen to mull over EA's $55 billion deal on October 2. During the conversation, hosted on Dring's The Game Business Show website and podcast, the two discussed Battlefield 6's highly successful beta--which attracted an estimated 25 million players, surpassed 2.4 million Steam wishlists, and has 1.7 million Steam preorders. These figures, according to van Dreunen and London-based market researchers Ampere Analysis, suggest that Battlefield 6 could absolutely dominate at launch.

"However, Battlefield 6 clearly has huge momentum," Dring wrote. "Ampere believes the game will sell five million units in its first week, and the excitement for the game is growing as we near its October 10 launch. It's pretty much guaranteed a big day one, and if it can deliver a strong start, that will likely have a knock-on effect on Call of Duty (which arrives over a month later)."

Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Coming From Oblivion Remastered Dev - Report

Fri, 10/03/2025 - 23:30

Microsoft and Halo Studios teased an upcoming announcement earlier this summer to coincide with the Halo World Championships event later this month. While that announcement is set for a panel on Friday, October 24, an unofficial report indicates that a remake of the original game, Halo: Combat Evolved, is in the works from The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered developer Virtuos.

According to Rebs Gaming, Abstraction, a studio under Virtuos' umbrella, is co-developing the Halo remake with Halo Studios and handling most of the work. Xbox Era subsequently corroborated the report, which also states that the remake will utilize a hybrid game engine that utilizes the Halo Reach Engine for the game's mechanics and Unreal Engine 5 for the visuals. This could potentially be the first version of Halo to hit PlayStation consoles, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Abstraction previously created accessibility features for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which included the 2011 remake of the first game, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, in which you could switch between the remastered and original visuals on the fly.

Backbone controllers for smartphones come in black and white, but if you've been looking for something more vibrant, then you can pick two limited-edition colorways right now. Available exclusively through Target, you can choose from the $170 Backbone Pro: Pink Edition or a $100 Backbone One: Purple Edition controller. Backbone Pro: Pink Edition $170

The Backbone Pro launched earlier this year, and as its name suggests, it's designed to be a premium add-on for your smartphone. This updated model offers a USB-C connection for compatible iPhone 15 and up, and it's also compatible with Android phones. Some of the noteworthy changes include larger grips with a textured finish, full-sized ALPS analog sticks, Hall Effect triggers, two remappable back buttons, and "carbon-pill" face buttons that are quieter when pressed. All the inputs you'd expect from a modern-day controller are here, so you can jump right into a game of Genshin Impact or Call of Duty.

App functionality also expands on the functionality of the Backbone Pro, and overall, this model improves on the ergonomics and customization of the original Backbone One.

See at Target Backbone One: Purple Edition $100

While the Backbone One isn't as advanced, it's still a budget-friendly controller that can easily give you a traditional gaming experience on your smartphone. The design has been tweaked to feel more comfortable in your hands, and these Gen 2 controllers use an enhanced D-pad and face buttons that Backbone claims are more responsive. Using one is very easy, as all you have to do is snap it onto your smartphone and you're good to go. You don't even need to remove the protective cover of your smartphone, and these devices are compatible with PlayStation Remote Play, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and other streaming services.

Lego Brick-Built Star Wars Logo Gets First Price Cut Before Prime Big Deal Days

Fri, 10/03/2025 - 15:21
Get deal at Amazon

A large selection of Star Wars Lego sets are on sale ahead of next week's Prime Big Deal Days sale. Amazon's deals include a bunch of new Star Wars building sets released over the past few months. Arguably the most notable recent model on sale is the Brick-Built Star Wars Logo. The 700-piece replica display model was already a budget-friendly option at its $60 MSRP, but now it's on sale for only $50. The Brick-Built Logo is one of several Star Wars Day 2025 Lego sets up for grabs for below MSRP.

Lego Brick-Built Star Wars Logo (700 Pieces) $50 (was $60)

The Brick-Built Star Wars Logo accurately depicts the legendary design that dates back to Star Wars: A New Hope's 1977 theatrical release. Exposed studs between the letters add depth and make it clear that this is a Lego set. The rounded edges of the logo are cleverly recreated with a variety of yellow pieces. There's an Easter Egg hidden inside the letter T that pays homage to Episode IV.

The completed 700-piece model measures 5 x 11.5 x 1 inches. If you're looking for a Star Wars model to serve as a centerpiece for your display shelf, it probably doesn't get any more ideal than the series logo constructed from Lego.

The Brick-Built Star Wars Logo launched a few months after the 913-piece Lego Marvel Logo set. That one has yet to be discounted from its $100 price, and it comes with five Marvel minifigures that pop out by pressing buttons on the model.

Other Star Wars Day 2025 sets with discounts include the Rebel U-Wing Starfighter and Jango Fett's Starship for $60 (was $70) each. Jango Fett's Helmet, another Star Wars Day release, is $65 (was $70). Two Walmart-exclusive Star Wars Day sets, Kylo Ren's Helmet and his Command Shuttle, are available in a bundle together for $98 (was $140). Walmart also has the Darth Maul Mech bundled with the Sith Infiltrator for $62 (was $88). The Darth Maul Mech launched in June. Both of those are makeshift bundles, but Walmart also has an official Lego Star Wars 3-in-1 Gift Set Bundle for $45.

Amazon also has a few sets that launched over the summer for below MSRP. The Battle Droid with STAP 1,088-piece model is $130 (was $140). Meanwhile, The Clone Wars V-19 Torrent Starfighter, which launched in August, is down to $52 (was $65). And if you haven't picked up your 2025 holiday calendar, the new Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar is on sale for $38 (was $45).

Fortnite Skipped Pride This Year

Fri, 10/03/2025 - 06:07

For the first time since it began running its annual small-scale Rainbow Royale event to celebrate members of the LGBTQIA+ community four years ago, Fortnite skipped its Pride celebration in 2025.

For each year since 2021, Fortnite has held its annual Pride event, Rainbow Royale, sometime during the summer. It was never a particularly huge event, as it mainly consisted of a pile of free rainbow-colored items in the item shop, like the Take a 'Bow and The Dip emotes. In 2022, they even had a Pride-themed battle bus and a few quests that you could complete to unlock a cool weapon wrap and hammer pickaxe, and dropped a skin for DC's Dreamer, a transgender superhero, in the item shop as part of the celebration, but that was as involved as it ever got. The annual Pride event wasn't exactly a takeover, since it never involved gameplay changes in Battle Royale. Last year the whole thing was only a shop section, which popped up for a week in both June and September.

Fortnite used to celebrate Pride.

In 2025, though, Fortnite has skipped Rainbow Royale completely. For the first time since Epic introduced the event, Fortnite has made it to October without anything related to Rainbow Royale appearing in the game. None of the free Pride items have been available in the shop during this calendar year thus far. The Mazy skin, a paid cosmetic that is usually included in the Rainbow Royale shop section, has popped up in the item shop by itself on just one single day in 2025.

This D&D-Inspired Game Smartly Makes Every Action Just An Action (And A Card!)

Fri, 10/03/2025 - 05:45

Games based on Dungeons & Dragons aren't anything new, but it's no secret that Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 did a lot to popularize video games in which you roll dice. In the wake of Baldur's Gate 3, Wizard of the Coast invested $1 billion into its gaming ecosystem, partnering with several different developers to create their own takes on D&D, such as Tactical Adventures' very D&D Fifth Edition-coded Solasta II and an unnamed, single-player D&D game from Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen's new studio. Unless WotC does a mass cancellation (like the five D&D games canned just prior to the release of Baldur's Gate 3), we can expect quite a few D&D games over the next several years.

The next one is slated for this year: Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked, a mouthful of a title for a fun four-player co-op game. If Baldur's Gate 3 is for folks who want something on par with the mechanical crunch of D&D Fifth Edition, then Battlemarked feels like the ideal choice for those who want something more approachable--a game to play with kids too young for something like Baldur's Gate 3, or other adults too busy to devote hours to a hobby as time-consuming as D&D.

GameSpot got an exclusive first look at Battlemarked, playing through two early levels alongside game director Gustav Stenmark and PR director Jamie Camargo. While I played as a Tiefling Rogue, Camargo played as an Elf Ranger, and Stenmark controlled two characters: a Dragonborn Paladin and Gnome Wizard. The first level we played through was a simple encounter between the party of heroic adventurers and a band of attacking goblins, while the second was the first floor of a multi-leveled dungeon crawl.

Sneak King May Never Return Because The Burger King Mascot Was Too Creepy

Fri, 10/03/2025 - 04:59

I'm sorry, Redditor JR_Masterson, but a sequel to the 2006 stealth-action game Sneak King will probably never happen because the mascot was creepy as hell.

In an interview with Restaurant Business (via IGN), the burger chain's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky said that because rivals like McDonald's were dominating with a more family-friendly mascot, the eerier "Creepy King" had to go to maintain profitability.

"There were a number of learnings we had from creepy king," Yashinsky said. "And we've moved away from creepy king because he had limited appeal."
