Mon, 08/03/2020 - 13:44

Grounded, the newest game from Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian, is off to a very strong start, it seems. Obsidian has announced that the game reached more than 1 million players over its first two days across Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access.

Obsidian shared the figure in a post on Xbox Wire, where it also confirmed that it will deliver new content for Grounded every month. The first monthly update will arrive on August 27, but the studio hasn't said what it will contain.

As a first-party exclusive from Microsoft, Grounded is included with Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One and PC. Alternatively, it can be purchased outright for $30 USD.

Wonderful Narrative Adventure Wide Ocean Big Jacket Has Added New Free Chapters

Mon, 08/03/2020 - 12:14

Wide Ocean Big Jacket has released a new content update, adding a few extra chapters to the extremely likable indie narrative game. The Meryl and Alan chapters, which were previously released as a demo during LudoNarraCon 2020, are now available in the full game.

These chapters focus on two characters who appear as side-figures during the main game, and you'll now be able to play as them and experience their story. As the original game was all of 90 minutes long, this extra content is most welcome.

Wide Ocean Big Jacket update!

We added the "Meryl and Alan" chapters from our Ludonarracon demo into the main game on Switch, Steam, and Itch.

Head back to the campground this weekend!

— Turnfollow (@_turnfollow) July 31, 2020

The full game follows Cloanne and Brad, who have taken their young niece Mord and her boyfriend Brad on a camping trip. It's not a game that's particularly rich with incident--the characters hang out, tell spooky stories, enjoy nature, and have tough conversations. It's beautiful.

Halo Infinite Craig Meme Pleases Phil Spencer, Who Calls The Brute Xbox's New Mascot

Mon, 08/03/2020 - 11:53

The Halo Infinite gameplay reveal showed off many aspects of the Xbox Series X launch title, including its large world, grapple hook, and back-to-basics combat design. But it also showed off a visual engine that a lot of fans were not impressed by, which has been exemplified by "Craig", the Brute whose deadpan expression has become a gaming meme for the ages.

Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has given his thoughts on the meme, and he seems to see the funny side of it. Asked by a fan for his take, Spencer called Craig "our new official Xbox mascot."

Behold Craig, the face of Xbox.

Continuing on, Spencer cited Craig as a great example of the creativity of the Xbox community. You can view the tweet below.

CoD: Modern Warfare/Warzone Season 5 Update Is Big, But PS4 Pre-Loading Is Live

Mon, 08/03/2020 - 11:32

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and the battle royale game Warzone are set for a big week, as the much-anticipated Season 5 update is due to arrive very soon. And at least on PS4, you don't have to wait to get the substantial update downloading.

Writing on Twitter, production director Paul Haile has now warned fans to expect yet another "big" update in terms of the file size. As with previous updates, the file size will be large, but the patch also contains back-end configurations that actually decrease the overall file size of the game. This happens through "optimization" of the game's asset packs, Hiele said.

"This means the download will be big, but the overall size of the game will actually shrink on your consoles after you download the patch, even though we're adding a bunch of new content for the season," he said. Hiele went on to say that it remains a "priority" for Infinity Ward to reduce the overall size of Modern Warfare and Warzone. However, this is a tricky task, Hiele said. "We'll continue to work on this and keep pushing space reductions out with future updates," he explained.

Halo 3: ODST PC Beta Test Kicks Of Soon, Here's How To Sign Up

Mon, 08/03/2020 - 10:44

The next title to be added to Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC is Halo 3: ODST, and Microsoft has now announced plans for the first beta test.

This test, or "flight" as Microsoft calls it, will begin the first half of August, developer 343 Industries said in a blog post. To get into the beta, you must be a Halo Insider member, and you can sign up for the free program here. Assuming this beta test is similar to previous ones, the rollout will begin small, so you may not be invited in right away.

Only a "slice" of ODST will be available in the PC beta test, 343 said. A beta test for Halo 3: ODST on Xbox One is also in the works, but this will presumably be related to the Firefight mode, as ODST's campaign is already available on Xbox One.

For more on New Horizons' second summer update, check out our guide to dream islands and dream addresses. If you're still catching up on the first summer update, see our guide to how to swim and dive and our list of all the sea creatures you can now catch.

When And Where Are The Fireworks Shows?

The fireworks shows take place every Sunday in August at 7 PM your time--this applies to both Northern and Southern Hemisphere islands. They're hosted in the plaza outside Resident Services by Jolly Redd, the one Animal Crossing character who's sure to have a good fireworks hookup, as well as Isabelle. But while the plaza is the epicenter, you'll be able to view the fireworks from any location on your island that has a good view of the sky.

Microsoft Confirms It Wants To Buy TikTok

Mon, 08/03/2020 - 09:58

The rumors were right--Microsoft has now confirmed that it is pursuing an acquisition of the viral app TikTok. A spokesperson for the Xbox company told GameSpot sister site CNET that Microsoft is "committed to acquiring TikTok" pending a review of the "security" of the app.

US President Donald Trump has expressed concerns about TikTok, and in particular its ownership by a Chinese company, ByteDance. Trump has suggested that he may attempt to order ByteDance to divest its US ownership, and that's where Microsoft could come in.

Trump and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently spoke about the matter, and Microsoft says it will work to address Trump's issues with the app. Microsoft will continue to work with the US government and Trump during the acquisition discussions, the statement said.

13 Years After Release, Halo 3 Is Getting New Guns And Weapon Skins

Mon, 08/03/2020 - 09:37

Season 3 of Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be a very big deal for Halo 3 in particular. Design director Max Szlagor said in a new blog post that Season 3 will contain many more customization options across the board, including brand-new content for Halo 3.

Season 3 will add new weapon skins, new visors, and "other content" for Halo 3, Szlagor said. This is a big deal because Halo 3 has never had weapon skins. "This marks the first step in our expansion of Halo 3 customization," Szlagor said.

Before this, 343 added weapon and vehicle skins to Halo: Combat Evolved, marking a first in the game's 19-year history.
