Pizza Hut Wants To Deliver Pizzas By Drone

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 09:10

When drone technology first started to emerge as a new viable, flyable conveyance the pitch by engineers and companies emphasized the pragmatic: Drones would be a way to make unmanned deliveries, for example, of textbooks to students who live far away from schools. Many years later, and the promise for drone tech's future is now reportedly in delivering pizzas to government-approved landing zones, because this is what 2021 looks like.

The Wall Street Journal has filed a report indicating that Pizza Hut Israel is now exploring and fully expecting by June to "test sending drones to drop multiple orders" at designated spaces like parking lots--"delivery drivers will collect orders from these makeshift drone ports and take them on the final leg to customers." In other words, customers will not yet be able to accept a delivery directly from a drone, so there's still something to look forward to.

"Drone delivery is a sexy thing to talk about, but it's not realistic to think we're going to see drones flying all over the sky dropping pizzas into everyone's backyards anytime soon," Ido Levanon told the Wall Street Journal. Levanon is the managing director of Dragontail Systems Ltd., the technology firm coordinating Pizza Hut's drone trial.

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Demo Leak Reveals New Secrets About Nintendo Classic

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 08:13

A demo build for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has turned up alongside an old N64 demo cartridge which housed Nintendo racer F-Zero X. Though the demo was partially saved over, some of it was intact enough to reveal new details about the Nintendo classic.

Details about the demo and its existence were shared by Forest of Illusion, a site dedicated to preserving Nintendo's history. There were several surprises found in the demo data, including several magical spell medallions that were supposed to grant Link different abilities to help with his journey.

Here's the F-Zero X development cartridge which contains the Spaceworld 97 Zelda 64 data in the overdump. There doesn't appear to be much code or music, just graphics and maps. Zelda 64 data begins at 0x1000000 in hex.https://t.co/DsFpv5uVau pic.twitter.com/JUyOjGRP5w

Twitch Indefinitely Bans Donald Trump

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 08:11

Twitch has indefinitely banned Donald Trump. Previously, the streaming platform temporarily suspended Trump's Twitch account after the Capitol attacks. Now, with the ban, Trump cannot make another account nor appeal Twitch's decision.

In a statement to The Verge, a Twitch spokesperson stated, "We have indefinitely suspended President Trump’s Twitch channel due to the ongoing risk of further incitement of violence."

"The President’s statements continue to be interpreted as calls to action, and we are taking this action to remove the potential for harm to our community and the general public. Twitch has clear rules that prohibit hateful conduct, harassment, or incitement of violence on our service, and we consider off-service events when making enforcement decisions. However, the events of the past weeks have highlighted a gap with respect to rhetoric that encourages violence, regardless of whether or not it was directly streamed on Twitch. We will be updating our policies as a result of our consideration of this situation," the spokesperson continued.

Freaks And Geeks Hits Hulu On January 25

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 08:06

Hulu has announced that starting on January 25, fans of Paul Feig's coming-of-age high school drama Freaks and Geeks will be able to stream the show on the platform. The streaming service also confirmed that its original soundtrack will remain intact.

The show was previously available on other networks and platforms, like FXX and Netflix. However, due licensing disputes, these brief revivals of Freaks and Geeks contained altered scenes where music cues were changed and an almost entirely different score. This wasn't the case for those who own Freaks and Geeks on DVD, which retains its iconic soundtrack. This is a big deal, as the show's music is performed by artists like Billy Joel, Grateful Dead, The Who, and Van Halen, all musicians who really help set the tone for Freaks and Geeks' setting.

According to The A.V. Club, Hulu confirmed that with bringing this iconic drama back to television, the streaming platform was able to secure the show's original soundtrack.

Crunchyroll Wants To Get More Anime Games Into Western Markets

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 08:00

Crunchyroll has been a prominent name in the anime industry for years now. The company has been the go-to for anime streaming for a while, but it has expanded into other ventures in recent years, with one of the most interesting being video game publishing.

In 2016, Crunchyroll Games began publishing games based on anime or original titles featuring anime-like art styles--the most recent of which, Princess Connect! Re:Dive, released in the US on January 19 after a successful launch in Asia back in 2018. The publisher has worked on games about other established properties, like Mob Psycho 100, as well as original IP, like Grand Alliance, all in the hopes of promoting types of games that traditionally haven't done as well in the west. Though there are exceptions, like last year's Genshin Impact, plenty of anime or anime-looking games just don't make a splash in American or European markets.

"I think [game publishing] goes in hand with our philosophy, which is our long-term vision to be a more significant kind of piece of that anime ecosystem, of that puzzle," Crunchyroll general manager of games & head of 360 Terry Li told me. "We already are on the video side, but I think on the game side, there's certainly an aspiration that we want to get more involved in game development, game publishing. Not for the sake of just doing that, but because we do believe that today there's an abundance of games that get made in Asia around this anime ecosystem that don't fully consider a global audience."

Six Asteroids Will Pass Close To Earth Today

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 07:47

Six asteroids will pass by Earth on January 20, which just so happens to be Inauguration Day in the US (via ZME Science). Fortunately, or unfortunately--depending on if you have a nihilistic wish for 2021 to just be over already--the asteroids will not collide with our planet.

According to ZME science, the closest one will pass Earth by roughly the same distance that the moon is located at. You can view all of the asteroids' data over at NASAs Center For Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

If you're curious about past asteroids that made it close enough to the Earth for NASA to take note, you can also view that info in the above link. CNEOS is an organization that "computes high precision orbits for Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), predicts their future motions, and assesses their impact hazard."

Valve Founder Gabe Newell Reacts To Cyberpunk 2077 Controversy

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 07:25

Cyberpunk 2077 had one of the most commercially successful launches of all-time for an RPG back in December, but the game's last-gen edition was marred with issues that prompted class-action lawsuits. Valve founder Gabe Newell has now shared his thoughts on the situation, telling New Zealand's TVNZ that he has a lot of sympathy for the developers at CD Projekt Red, adding that he believes the Polish studio will do what it can to make things right as time goes on.

"I have a lot of sympathy with a situation that every game developer finds themselves in," he said. "All I know is that there are a lot of very happy gamers in the PC space, which are the ones that are most visible to us."

Newell said there are parts of Cyberpunk 2077 that are "just brilliant," and this demonstrates that the developers put in a "tremendous amount of work" to get the game out the door.

Riz Ahmed Explains Why Turned Down Big Money To Make Sound Of Metal

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 06:55

After starring in the box office smashes Rogue One and Venom, actor Riz Ahmed had a choice to make: continue to pursue big commercial projects and make a lot of money or try something else. He chose the latter and went on to star in Sound of Metal, and now he's explained some of his thinking and why it was ultimately the right decision for him and his career.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ahmed said he had a strong gut feeling about Sound of Metal, in which he plays a drummer who begins to lose his hearing.

"'Why are you doing this when you could go off and get paid, finally?'" Ahmed recalled about his thought process. "There was an opportunity to do bigger, more commercial projects and make money and buy a home and all these things. But I thought, 'Here's your chance.' My gut feeling about it was so strong. And for whatever reason, I felt really hungry for something like that, to go all in and just fucking go there."

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Steps Down

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 06:01

Polarizing Federal Communications Chairman Ajit Pai has stepped down from his post. This was a move Pai signaled back in November and would follow through on when then President-Elect Joe Biden is inaugurated.

Fans of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver may recall a 2017 episode on net neutrality that specifically targeted and dissected Pai's enthusiasm for both drinking from a novelty-sized Reese's Peanut Butter Cup mug and also an FCC proposal that would no longer classify broadband internet as a utility. Under former President Trump, the FCC proceeded with these plans to eliminate such regulations--thereby creating "fast" and "slow" lanes for internet traffic. This was just one of many examples of policies Pai shepherded through that drew massive criticism.

Vice has pointed out that Pai's FCC Twitter account no longer exists, which means Pai's impassioned efforts to attack his critics has also vanished from the internet. (Aside from what's presumably still on the digital archive Wayback Machine.) However, over on Pai's personal Twitter, he released a formal farewell message, thanking his co-workers for four years "bridging the digital device to making the agency more transparent."

Valve Has Multiple New Games In Development, According To Gabe Newell

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 05:44

After the success of Half Life: Alyx (the first Half Life game in 13 years), Valve co-founder and CEO Gabe Newell has confirmed that Valve has multiple games in the pipeline, and is looking to focus on more single-player experiences.

In an interview with 1 News, Newell talked about how Alyx's release brought new energy to the studio. "Alyx was great -- to be back doing single-player games, that created a lot of momentum inside of the company to do more of that," Newell said. "We definitely have games in development that we’re going to be announcing -- it's fun to ship games."

When it comes to what, exactly, these games are, and if they might be additional entries in the Portal and Half Life series however, Newell is keeping quiet. "I've successfully not spoken about those things for a long time and I hope to continue to not talk about them until they are moot questions," he said. "The nice thing is, by not answering those questions, I avoid the community coming up with new, equally-difficult-to-answer questions."

Minecraft Update Adds Glow Squid

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 05:30

Minecraft has debuted an all-new monster called the Glow Squid, and it's all because of the fans' votes from the recent Minecraft Live virtual event. The squid doesn't just come about naturally, however, so we'll let you know how you can find it.

TechRaptor reports that the time being, at least, Glow Squid eggs can only be found in the creative inventory. Once you kill a Glow Squid, you can get a bioluminescent ink sack that you can use to make glowing text. Just combine the ink sack with another item at a crafting table, and then use a regular glow sack if you want to remove the glowing effect.

Minecraft Live took place in October and the event included a live vote to determine the next mob that would be added to the block-building game. The choices came down to the Iceologer from Minecraft Dungeons, which would be a new hostile mob that occupies snowy regions, a Moobloom from Minecraft Earth, which would have a special interaction with flower forest biomes, and the Glow Squid. Ultimately the Glow Squid won in the final vote between it and the Iceologer.

Final Alex Trebek Jeopardy! Episode Draws Record-Setting 14 Million Viewers

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 05:30

Alex Trebek's death from pancreatic cancer back on November 8, understandably, has many people wondering about Jeopardy!'s legacy and how the show will continue. However the show ultimately proceeds, there are now numbers to put to how enduring the popular game show continues to be. According to Deadline, Trebek's final telecast of the show on January 8 averaged 14 million total viewers.

Further analysis of the show's final ratings under Trebek also indicate the week of January 4 was its most-watched to date with 11.1 million total viewers overall.

There are of course extenuating circumstances around these episodes, but these numbers represent the show's largest audience since June 3, 2019--also known as the final episode of gambler James Holzhauer's incredible winning streak of 33 episodes. Holzhauer's run is second only to Ken Jennings, who has had an unprecedented 74 consecutive wins on the show. Therefore, it has not been a surprise that after Trebek's death, Jennings has stepped in as interim host.

Thu, 01/21/2021 - 05:19

Update: This deal seems to have now ended and returned to full price.

It's rare that we see outright discounts on Nintendo Switch Online, the annual membership required to enjoy online multiplayer in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Right now, however, you can snag a 12-month family subscription of Switch Online for $20.89 at Walmart, down from its usual price of $35. This is the cheapest we can recall ever seeing a family Switch Online membership, and there's a chance it could even be an error on Walmart's website, though we were able to successfully take advantage of the deal ourselves.
